I can't seem to find the thread where we post recent purchases and then collectively laugh at our shitty judgement.
Just bought a '97 Grand Prix GTP because I got a good deal on the price and the only other thing I could afford was a mechanic's special.
I give it 8 months before no single electrical component inside the car works any longer.
How about you, /o/? What black holes of money have you recently saddled yourselves with?

That's the one with the supercharger, right? Guy I worked with had one. Nice car but it spent more time being fixed than being driven.
In somewhat related news, my Audi needs another sensor replaced (hopefully just that) but at least I can drive it this time.

I liked Pontiacs, but I've always cautioned people about buying a used one because they always seemed to attract the worst owners.
Anyway, I got it pretty good. Got a 93 Buick Century with 107K for free because the owners wouldn't take care of it and it was barely driveable. I took it off their hands, got it running well, and it's been my faithful DD to this day.
Still don't have AC though. Damn R-12.

Not that recent, but there's my 40 year old Dodge.
Replacement trunk floor was siliconed in over rust. Rear wheel arches were compromised. Driveshaft was 2" too short. Engine wiring was fucky (auto choke wasn't wired in right) and the battery didn't charge sufficiently. Carburetor was full of shit. Light wiring was fucky and indicators didn't work. Air conditioner was stuck to full heat full on. Transmission had a slow leak, power steering had a bad leak. Petrol tank had a hole drilled in the top, leaked fuel out the seams. Exhaust was made by Mexicans and randomly changed pipe radius, evidently built out of scrap. Holes in frame. One tire different from rest. No radio. No clock. No temp. Speedo is inaccurate.
Most of that is fixed now. Still come out on top what with the exchange rate.

Yeah it was fucking perplexing.
It was a new tank that had been replaced alongside the floor, presumably.
I kind of wish that the person had perished in that potential explosion.

It's showing the code for the vehicle speed sensor, P0504 I think it is. Just need some time to tear it apart to get at the transmission. This just a month after replacing the ignition control module or something like that. I'm lucky I work at a parts store or I couldn't afford to keep her.

1987 MR2, swapped with a 20v 4A-GE blacktop and a 6 speed tranny to go with. ~232k miles on the body, ~36k on the engine. Got it for 4 thousand. I bought it as a project and track day/conefag car. Going to clean her up and some small modifications to make her track worthy.

I'm very much aware, and I think stance anything is absolutely disgusting so you wont be seeing that from me. Honestly this thing is almost track worthy as is. I just need to upgrade the brakes and get some new tires, MAYBE lower it, but definitely give it a bit of camber and I think it'll do nicely.
I have decided to keep the engine NA, I don't want to turbo or supercharge it.
Took some real pictures of it this time, after cleaning it up. Still needs to be detailed and waxed but I can do that another day. I'm surprised just how well the paint on it has held up, it looked way worse when I got it from the previous owner. This car is clean as fuck and personally I think I snagged a good deal.

Your car looks great man, surprisingly good shape for a product of the 1980's.
If you're thinking of conefagging, then all you really need are a decent set of tires and seat time. Do brakes only if you're going to track it. Learn to drive first before spending money on your car.

That's a pretty good deal. Mine is in way worse condition. I paid $1600, and the previous owners removed the thermostat, shoved a shit ton of stopleak into the coolant system, and that in conjuction with the AW11's 40 quarts of coolant, it makes it VERY hard to detect a blown headgasket.
Whatever. my engine is in phenomenal condition now. Had the head rebuilt, new seals on everything, new belts. Hasn't leaked/burnt a drop of oil or coolant since the work I've done on it.
Now I'm just chasing electrical problems. brights only work intermittently, Dash lights go off whenever they want to. Radio is possessed and cycles through the whole spectrum, only to stop on the station it was on before. The circuit for all my gauges has failed. So as of right now I only have speedo and gas.
If you got any advice I'll gadly take it.

Well if you don't go any advice for me, let me give you some.
While you're maintaining an MR2, keep in mind it's an MR2. Meaning, it's not a SBC. You are going to have to take stuff apart to get to the thing you wanna take apart. For example, if you want to replace the water pump apart. Yes you are going to have to drain the coolant, remove the upper radiator hose, remove the reservoir, remove the alternator, remove the alternator bracket, remove the timing belt cover.

hwy 161 and hwy 7 can be fun at night.
Rhodes lake, in that area are super technical. You won't go faster than 55mph on them. While on 161 etc you can easily hit over 100mph in some sections.
I personally prefer the slower ones.

Got a hand-me-down 94 Grand Prix 7 years ago. Still doing just fine. The starter finally gave out 2 winters ago and I had to replace it, ironically at the same time I put a new battery in that ended up being bad, so I got as new, new one that also ended up being bad. The turn singles broke 5 years ago and I only fixed them this year along with the back windows never wanting to go down in the winter.
Still she's served me well the last 7 years. It was the family car my whole childhood and now It's mine. I'll drive that thing till it dies.

tbh it makes some sense because everything is computerized nowadays, but I don't see the benefit in removing it.
It's not like it's a cheap car that could benefit from saving 10 bucks on a stick + it's tubing. And if the user puts dirt or bad oil then it's user error and fuck them.

My boss turned up at work this morning with a Honda CR-V he got in a police auction for 1k European Pesos. 1.6 engine with intercooler, runs great, all wheel drive works. No hook to attach anything to it, and it's only 4 seats.
I think that car is totally not suited for anything work related. Besides carrying 4 people and a bucket in the boot, which is tiny.
TL;DR CR-V is a shit car. Prove me wrong.

Probably a '12-'16, since that's the only gen that came with a 1.6 (N16A1, a turbodiesel). If that's the case, then I agree, because new cars in general are shit-tier. My old '98 is nice, though.

I bought a 2019 Volkswagen GTI Golf, bought it since its just going to be a 2018 version with slightly better performanceand can get manual since its much harder to find in burgerland. I hate having a car with previous owners because there is always a stain or dent they caused that drives me up the wall. Not to mention I don't trust people to do basic maintenance. Good news is I got it for the same price as the 2018 model.Thought it was a fun drive, which is what I want in a daily and will hopefully last me at least 10 years with proper maintenance.did I fuck up bad?

Does it have a timing chain or a timing belt? if it has the former, do find out what the recommended interval is for a new timing chain, because they like to fail from fatigue.

The GTI isn't a bad bet in itself. The thing is, it has a motherfucking SPEAKER for "better" engine sounds. Disable the shit and you'll have a reliable, fun hot hatch. Not a bad buy, even from a European pov.

>A speaker for "better" engine sound
WEW, seriously? I knew it sounded too good whenever I put it on sport mode. I did think about that RCR review of the 2017 model to, but didn't think they kept it.

Yes. It's called soundaktor or something like that, mounted to the firewall. It should be easy to unhook it.
If you want better sound, you're better off removing the hood liner, engine cover and oil pan cover.

Eh, it's still mad gay.
Funnily, VW's best sounding engines are their diesels. I own the 2016 Polo 1.4 TDi with three pistons, and with all the sound deadening plastics pulled off it sounds really nice.

If you are painting it why stop and not go all the way? Just going to make it look worse than before.
