Took my 89 golf for it's annual* MOT test this morning, it passed with only one advisory note about a minor oil leak which I was already aware of. Imaginemysurprise.jpg

Half an hour later, turned the key… nothing. The ignition barrel is kerfucked.

A bit of wire, some sparks and smoke later, and I managed to start it up and make it home. Somehow, replacement parts are still available, despite the VW parts guy telling me they're not.

Tomorrow i'll be figuring out how to fit the new one…

Any other anons have a classic car as their daily driver, and how much of a pain in the colon is it?

*14 months, because I am absent-minded. Got away with it, again.

P.S., not my golf in pic, I don't have any… mine's a 1.6CL 4+E with electric, er, nothing, faded paint and some rough bits. Yes, it's a rat, but hasn't been modded (molested) by a teenager.

Word of advice: invest in some serious security and/or storage for when you're not driving it. Yobs are still stuck in the year 2000 mindset that econoboxes produced from the '80s - early '90s are as expendable as they once were and will not hesitate to joyride, vandalize and torch it at the most convenient opportunity. Every day a classic car is stolen. A quarter of those are damaged beyond repair.

These two happened in the last 2 years. The latter was almost showroom spec with original dealer tags. They found the fuckers that did it passed out drunk immediately next to the car.

This one's particularly heart-rending. The 87 year old owner had taken good care of it from new. It's thought that simply due to the guy's car appearing in the newspaper that some niggers (or white niggers, that's what yobs are) saw it as a challenge and took it before burning it to a crisp. There were only 50 of these left.

Good. You should learn that the world is a cruel fucking place that is little more than a giant crab bucket. Second another crab sees you trying to escape, they'll drag you down so far beneath their level you'll be tasting their crabsticks for the next few years.

Allow me to direct you fellow anons in a story that thankfully didn't have such a grim ending; Kay Pinnock's MG B. Kay left her I'll be honest I'm transpicious af about this person MG B outside every day with a security camera keeping guard at all times. One day, a pair of men decided to steal it by gently pushing it from behind with their car onto a truck. In broad daylight. With several people watching. They all passed by. Not even a single phone call to the police. Total apathy.

It's NPC behaviour at its finest. Not one of them does anything about it. They can see it's being stolen, they just don't care. The police similarly didn't care even after the plate was tracked to an owner. In the end it was vigilante justice that found where the car was being temporarily holed up and delivered it back to its rightful owner.

Let me make a few things clear, in case this confuses you at all:

The police do not care about your classic car.

The general public do not care about your classic car.

The only person that will care about your classic car is yourself. View everyone you share the road with that isn't driving a classic themself as an enemy. Pedestrians, drivers, riders, cyclists, even equestrians.

They want us off the road. They want us to join them in their self-driving electric soapboxes. They think we're singlehandedly killing the environment. They think we're selfish for not sitting our asses down on a bus with the rest of the cattle. They think we're lazy for not riding a bicycle instead and slowly sterilizing ourselves from the inside out.

I say fuck all that. 2030 will be the year they'll try to remove us from the face of the Earth. I say get ready to fight. I know when that day comes I'll hopefully be part of a procession of hundreds, if not thousands riding until our tires shred.

Not going to lie, "transpicious" made me do a lol.

The rest (and others itt) made me do a 'feels bad, man' face…

I have taken steps to prevent it getting stolen, I fitted a hidden 'kill switch' to disconnect the battery, when at work it's parked right outside the doors where I can see it, and at night we 'circle the wagons' (my wife's truck across the end of the drive). For now, that seems to be enough to deter an enthusiastic opportunist joyrider.

>ready to fight

Fuck yeah I am. I'll defend this old 'bag of shit' (my mate the MOT tester's words) like I'd defend any of my other children.

Hopefully I'll be alongside you in that procession, probably still making blue smoke as oil seeps onto the exhaust manifold :)

so much anger in your post.

But you're wrong, they won't remove old cars from the road for a simple reason: old cars are like old paintings, they retain value and they use it like an asset. So if you can't drive them, they'll lose all their value and as such, they won't ban them.

So could you move your conspirationnist face out of the way, that'd be nice.

Nice.

I'm 'oop north' so salt is a concern. It has been patched up underneath a couple of times over the years, and there is some surface rust so that'll have to be treated and re-waxed later this year. Other than that it's surprisingly solid.

The arches and the panel below the tailgate are pretty shabby (pic related), but i'm not too worried about them just yet.

So much ignorance in your post.

You are part of the problem. The reason a genocide like this is allowed to occur so easily is because it is orchestrated completely under the radar so that the average layman will ignore it. Countries around the world pass regulations every week with the intention of making the ownership of old cars more inconvenient. It starts out with simple things like exhaust dB limits or modification regulations. Most people see no issue with that as it is a preventative measure against street racing. But then there are mandatory vehicle inspections, in the beginning they merely checked basic functions such as lights and the horn, but now they will fail you for visible rust, dents, or millimeter rock chips in the windshield. In many northern parts of my country, they will salt the roads every day that the temperature hits below 32F, regardless of whether it will snow or not. Because of this, most cars here have a lifespan of only 10-15 years because they won't pass inspection. In areas where there is no risk of snow, they will impose emissions tests to take older cars off of the road.

>they wont remove old cars from the road for a a simple reason: old cars are like old paintings

Government legislation doesn't give a fuck about any cultural value of a car. Tell me why you still see >50 year old cars in the UK getting crushed after they were used for banger racing when they failed MOT. If it doesn't fit into their agenda of a modern "progressive" city, then it needs to be eradicated in their eyes.

>they won't ban them

They already have in many places. China and certain provinces in India force mandatory scrappage after a vehicle is of a certain age (10-15 years). Paris banned pre-2002 cars from driving within city limits.

Cities around the world have already laid out plans to eliminate ICE cars, diesel cars, cars registered before a certain year, or even private cars as a whole by a certain deadline. Our days are numbered, by 2040 the only place where it will be legal to privately own ICE will be in the Gulf States.

Yup, it's a slow boil. We are each frogs in an infinitely long pan, and are among the few that know we're on the cusp of being boiled to death. Only problem is we can't escape, and none of the other frogs (aka normies) give a shit.

>Government legislation doesn't give a fuck about any cultural value of a car. QFT. I've singled banger racing out multiple times on this board and every time I'm met with apologists - "oh, they were unroadworthy anyway" or "oh, there are thousands of these so why get so upset" and comically miss the point. Yeah, no, fuck off. If it has to exist, the "sport" should be nationally restricted to 15 - 24 year old cars only. Cars at the absolute bottom of their value. Reminder that even a few years ago cars like pic related were still getting trashed at banger events. Imagine surviving The Great Depression, World War 2, the Oil Crisis only to get wrecked by a retard who sees no value in repairing you.

The only reason are culture is allowed to be destroyed is because of two things:

>1. It's a display of free will and "toxic masculinity"

>2. Cars cause pollution so because of that we basically lose any right to have our culture preserved for future generations

Governments already stopped opening new roads years ago, and every time they try to build any they're met with a group of useful idiot protestors who bitch about the "destruction" of their green areas. Many roads that could free congestion are often restricted to public service vehicles only and eventually get pedestrianized. Over the past decade I've watched as my city centre has become a square mile of cheap paving slabs.

>China and certain provinces in India force mandatory scrappage after a vehicle is of a certain age (10-15 years)

Holy fuck, I wasn't even aware of this. Look at this shit!

That's borderline totalitarian. Thank fuck it's only China so there's practically nothing of worth (apart from the Shanghai V-Dubs maybe). I'm guessing loads of poor chink families are out of transport, which is exactly what the world governments want as per the UN Agenda Planned-Opolis video.

Arguably the worst part is they could now pull that shit off in the West and people would follow like lemmings. You can say they won't but the Scrappage Scheme & Cash for Clunkers a decade ago gave me all the evidence I needed.

In 2030 they will try to enact the "Motor Law" as Rush put it in their song Red Barchetta, where they will actively hunt us down. It's hard to think that's not even close to the worst thing that'll happen that year.

And though the UK may seem generous by removing the MoT for cars over 30/35 years of age (can't remember, cba to look it up), I am fairly sure this is a con so that when someone inevitably wrecks their classic and a fault is found in said classic that an MoT Test would have caught, this will allow them to impose the stringent regulations they wanted in the first place.

Motor racing will be dead, that's for sure. If you wanted to go to Le Mans, the Indy 500, Daytona 500 etc. then do so in the next 2 - 5 years. They'll try to pass electric racing as "exciting" but the lack of an engine note means it could never compare.

Car shows as we currently know them I think will be largely abolished, only the "top" shows like Pebble Beach and Goodwood could afford to keep going. Your local shows and meets will have no chance.

I'll be tremendously upset the day the inevitable comes, but I won't shed a tear. Normalfags had more than their fair share of chances to take action. Worst case scenario I'll simply move to a country where transport is necessary for survival (i.e. Australia).

All the things you mentioned there are already part of the UK MOT test.

Loudness limits? Yes. Okay, not a bad thing. Stupid exhausts are stupid anyway.

Modification regulations, not so much. As long as there's no sharp pointy bits, go nuts.

Rust? If it's severe enough on structural parts, like engine mounts or wishbones - fail. But a rusty or dented body won't prevent a test certificate being issued.

Lights, horn etc - those things should work as intended.

Windscreen chips in the swept area of the wipers must be repaired, but small chips outside that will pass. A cracked screen is a fail though.

Not going to argue, but vehicles built before January 11th 1979 (as of today) no longer require an annual MoT. I assume they still require one if they are rebuilt, lawfully removed from the road, SORNed or otherwise off it for extended periods of time, but the fact of the matter is they don't need the same MoT requirements that newer cars do. This means they will no longer be as typically well kept as a modern car, and in an accident the car and the MoT exemption will be called into fault, rather than the driver (if the driver was even at fault to begin with).

You limey faggots live in a dystopian society. In the states, the free ones at least unless there's something so glaringly wrong with your car that a cop can notice from down the street (ie no brake lights, missing fenders) you can drive. Even if you are driving without a front bumper or something, most cops won't care unless you're breaking some other law.

IKR, it's the main reason as to why we have so few cars made before 2000 nowadays.

Case in point, pic related is the Sao Penza. Not a Sao Penza, THE Sao Penza. The only one left. Around 1,000 were produced as a badge-engineered South African Mazda 323 and was sold alongside the Kia Pride (which you'll know as the Ford Festiva), and every single one was scrapped, apart from this one which hid in storage for over a decade. Had it not been preserved in this manner, there is no doubt the car would legitimately be extinct. Which is insane for something made in the early 90s.

The most recent timestamp on any of those photos is 2014, long before this law was enacted. Yes, you can drive older cars in other regions, but they are banned in the capital where many people have to visit in order to commute to work, visit their families, and to see events/visit attractions. It's only inciting class divide even more to impose a regulation like that. Many other European cities have also followed suit.

>There are laws here to save cars older than 30 years old

Exemptions until 2020 isn't the equivalent of saving. Unless those cars are exported or put in a museum by then, they will most likely be scrapped.

Seconding this. Read the law carefully, not the news articles about how bad it is.

In Latvia you now have a clusterfuck of not understandable tables of what category of cars has to pay how much road tax and by what measure. Like "registered before 2004" (followed by a massive table) or "Engine displacement on cars registered after 2017"(followeed by another massive table) or the bonus of 300 euros you have to pay just because your engine displacement is above 3.5L. Most of those car categories can be described as "Baaaw, they are putting more tax on this and that to get old cars of the roads", but if you drive an average 90s-early 2000s car with statistical average 1.8 gasoline engine, nothing changes. I just traded my M1009 CUCV for two diesel rabbits: 80 and 83. Pretty fun little four/five speeds! Working pretty well as a daily besides the wheel bearings going out, but the 50+ mpg is nothing to scoff at. One has some floor rust and fender spots, but the 80 is pretty decent besides some small cancer under the rain guard (lip?) on the roof.

Any tips on these bad boys?

Also US, fuck emissions and testing

I was planning on doing forced for better mpg. I have three pumps, but one has the fuel enrichment snapped off inside and the other won't thread it looks like. I'm thinking of taking the 1.6 from my 83 and swapping it for the 1.5 in the 80. Any reason not too? Also one is a C and the other an L, I can't find any good info really on what that changed.

Hold on. Is the blower not working? The small radiator loop is that fucked? Air vents full of vomit and dirt? There really are only three things that can be broken there.

Emissions is nothing much to worry about, a healthy engine with freshly cleaned air filter, changed oil and fuel filter emits nothing. My Mazda 323 with worn out valve seals emitted 84 euros on last inspection. I had forgotten to change the airfilter too. My dad can get his Fiat Albea to emit goddamn 15 euros in tax. And no, emissions will never be the reason why you are not granted a pass in the inspection. You can get taxed to high heavens (one not working cylinder can blow out a sum of 600 euros), but then it's your fault.

Speaking of classics, i just got myself a bike, a late 80s Minsk 125. It had been standing outside for some time now, under a cover. I heard it had something wrong with the carbuerator, which i belive is because it has no damn airfilter. It has spark however, so the dyno works. The engine turns too. All the cables are rotten to shit, so right now it has no brakes or anything like that.

I plan on getting a fresh set of cables and a new set of everything that is made of rubber on it, besdes the wheels. The wheels are fine, they inflated with no leaks, rolled on the trailer with no problems.

Anyone has any experience with vintage bikes? What should i do first to get it in shape until summer?

I'd replace the old fuel/oil lines and filters, and like anon said above, fresh gasoline will clean out the residue - cotton buds are good for getting into the spigots.

Dispose of the old fuel carefully, (it degrades over time) and try not to set yourself on fire. Wouldn't hurt to clean the oil tank as well, same method.

This is society's attitude not just towards cars, but towards anything historic that had a practical purpose.

Go to any given recycling plant in any city with a population higher than 10,000, and every single day you'll see luton vans piled 10 feet high with perfectly functional CRT TVs from the '80s and '90s. It's an almost unlimited supply. They could be used for spares by those who use them, form a part of a collection, or be given to a country less fortunate than our own for those who have never experienced television before. But instead the golems just drive them to recycling centres like the NPCs they are, paid merely to drive them away and then pay said centre to dump them off. In spite of the fact they could pull a profit if they made some effort to sell them.

Why?

Because the owners didn't want them anymore, and taking them away was the job they were paid for. The drivers will then open up the back and carelessly toss each TV down the 15 foot gap between the walkway and receptacle, instantly smashing it in the process. It makes you fucking sick. How a society such as ours have become such collective ingrates and wasteful due to the sudden advances in technology. It needs to be burned to the fucking ground.

The oddest part is it appears to be a fetish. Youtube has thousands, if not tens of thousands of videos of people smashing obsolete tech. There's a channel in particular ran by an Australian prick known as "smashthings1" that literally lives for that type of shit. It doesn't take much to then find the men and women that stomp them under their shoes as an extension of some people's affinity with feet. There's one channel where the guy seems to be obsessed with grinding old glass/metal radio tubes to dust underneath his boots. In the comments he boasted that he's destroyed 1,500 on his own accord, and his "friends" have destroyed a further 3,000.

Think about that. We've lost FIVE THOUSAND usable radio tubes due to deliberate destruction from only a handful of individuals.

The worst one I ever saw was a TV camera from the '60s somebody had managed to get a hold of, of which a collector told him was 1 of only 2 known left to exist and was worth a five-digit figure easily, and the guy filmed himself smashing it to pieces with a golf club.

Buildings too - particularly those made in the Victorian era are being destroyed as we speak. Beautiful architecture torn down to make way for culturally-Marixst slabs of glass and stone. This video made me want to punch a brick wall.

Not to play devil's advocate but people want to upgrade their current products because they're functionally better (at least supposed to be) and to cut back on the frustration dealt with them, simple as that. They'll probably be some left for those weirdos anyway.

>Youtube has thousands, if not tens of thousands of videos of people smashing obsolete tech.

>Not only are there channels that destroy old shit, but new shit as well, with no reason. Just to be an asshole.

It's funny to them. Early this year RLM, which many of those who browse /tv/ will be familiar with, bought 2,000 vintage Star Wars action figures and immersed them in a large vat of acetone. Nothing of true value was destroyed, but I'd wager it has fucked the second hand market for those figures on an unimaginable scale.

>And the Lighthouse of Alexandria was never saved.

The crusades were a mistake. The whole of Europe should have just declared war on the bastards instead and split the countries into their empires

The Lighthouse stood for hundreds of years growing slowly decrepit, and then they pulled what was left down. There are no traces of it left, and the lighthouse currently masquerading in its place is a fucking joke compared to the original. The closest you can come to it these days is the Citadel of Qaitbay, which uses the Lighthouse's stone in its construction. Problem is that's now a historical landmark in its own right, so you couldn't just demolish it and rearrange the stone back into its original form.

The same thing will happen to the Pyramids, I fear. I reckon they have perhaps 100 years left before they too start to fall apart. And instead of rebuilding them to how we remember them or restoring them to their original gold-plated construction, they'll probably dismantle them and build a commemorative smaller pyramid in the area which they once stood, using as much original stone as possible. By far the biggest problem we have are moralfags who believe everything should be left as it were. Otherwise we'd probably have a fully rebuilt Colosseum that could host all sorts of events by now, instead of the giant smashed china cup it currently resembles occasionally putting on a charity concert or whatever every now and then. Because the very idea or notion of "restoration" is sacrilege to them. Thus it's "better" to have something that could collapse at any moment over something that's structurally sound but only has 75% of its original material remaining.

It's why rusted shitheaps of cars from the pre-war era that are visibly falling apart by the second sell for digits unthinkable for clean, robust restorations. The only known surviving Toyota Model AA in the world was a Russian spoil of war that was used as a farm mule for 60 - 70 years and had its entire drivetrain replaced with a truck's, including the engine, which had a new grill crudely built where the original used to stand. It will now slowly rust into a pile of brown metallic dust in some museum as nobody dares to restore it.

Newsflash; regardless of what you do with a car, whether you daily drive it hard or keep it as a garage queen, eventually you are going to need to restore it. The air will always have some moisture in it. Metal will always have some impurities in it. Rubber will always liquidize. Unless you manage to create a perfect vacuum, you can never leave a car alone else it will, given enough time, become a pile of rust. Even Corvettes will eventually rot - just look at the sorry state of (((Peter Max)))'s collection. These were each mint condition, meticulously hand-restored or low-mileage, unblemished examples depending on the year as part of a VH1 promotion. They were given to a regular Joe under the knowledge that there was no way he'd be able to afford their upkeep, rather than the way I'd have done it - give 2 to 15 lucky people. And then that kike kept rumoring an "art project" (which would have ended up in them having horrendous paintjobs applied to them and cheerleaders constantly stomping on the backseat if you've read the story) that never came to fruition.

>And while there are people out there set out to destroy don't forget plenty of people also restore cars and other things too.

That's true, but the main point I have is it's far easier to destroy than to build. You go to forums and most restorations that don't have constant cashflow attached to them take about 2 years to complete, provided they don't go on hiatus. There was a story that was well-covered about a guy who found his dad's exact TVR and was doing well with the restoration until his wife divorced him. Had that not happened, he was probably 3 - 6 months away from completing it. 5 years later it's still not done, and his last post was in 2017. Nobody knows what happened to it.

With regards to Battersea, it should never have been shut down. Nuclear energy is the only viable future for clean power. Chernobyl and Fukushima only happened due to being the worst-case scenario of a pre-existing worst-case scenario. The former was forcing the power plant to undergo conditions that it would never encounter in the real world on a flawed RBMK design, with backup diesel generators that couldn't supply feedwater quickly enough. Fix any of those three conditions and it would not have happened. But of course, that was enough to propagandize the idea that nuclear power plants are totally unsafe and should all be shut down.

>every fucking video of a Volkswagen A1 and A2 platform is slammed and niggered.

And you know why? Because people who do not slam and nig their cars don't put videos of them on the internet. And if they do, they do not get nearly as much interest.

There are enough Mk2 Golfs left for thrashing for another 20 years. It hurts my soul to see one covered in stickers and made into a rally car, but that is their nature. A cheap, easy to find parts for old car.

My limited understanding is the power station is unused right? I feel like they could have done something good with it that doesn't involve modern art being jizzed on it. Something useful maybe. All my knowledge about the thing is the cover of Animals.

It's pretty depressing. From dust till dust, but an effort should always be made to save things from our past. I've always had a interest in the 7 wonders and the only one left crumbles.

What a colossal fucking waste. Hope that uncultured Stacy gets ran the fuck over multiple times when the bitch least expects it. Apparently that's a "sacrifice", meaning someone sent all those cars willingly. How fucking cucked do you need to be to waste that much money on something that could bring so many others joy? I've always been more of a Hot Wheels man myself, but there are people who like those Herpas and Oxfords and other small 1/76 or 1/87 models, and that thundercunt probably destroyed a good $200 worth.

Now this is interesting, 8 columns from the Temple of Artemis went into the construction of the Hagia Sophia I always swore it was spelt Sofia - guess that's the Mandela Effect for you meaning that's yet another building which has parts of an Ancient Wonder inside. It does amaze me with sadness though that the Pyramids are the last of their kind. How in the space of 1,500 years we went from 7 complete Wonders to the remnants of just 1, to the extent that we don't even know for sure if the Hanging Gardens of Babylon even existed.

I take comfort knowing at least the modern world didn't kill 6/7 of them and we still have a lot left in Europe as long as none of that's destroyed too with diversity. I know this far of topic from cars.

Give their tools away to their subsidiaries in developing countries. VW tools go from Germany to Spain/Czeckia, then to Africa/South America/India/Asia. There they are used until they fall apart and are scrapped.

Fiat gives their tooling to Turkish/Indian/Japanese plants.

Not sure about others.

Not to insult you, but literally nobody uses that term. Don't let the government force a non-organic name that none of the people like onto your country. Matter of fact, more people use Czechoslovakia than Czechia.
