No offense, colonial here, but weren't Renault always considered to be basic transport (with the few exceptions).
At the very least it explains why the cars in such conditions. People want a car, so they go with what's cheap that gets the job done. They don't take care of them because they don't attach themselves to their cars like anyone here would and see it as merely an appliance to be used and replaced as needed.
