Hi /o/ to generate discussion I propose a question that's been on my mind for a bit.

What's the appeal of car share programs? Or self driving cars? Why do people seem determined to give up their freedom of movement granted by owning a car and being able to drive?

Now, I do get some of it being related to cost, just buying, insuring, and maintaining is expensive, only buying a house will be a bigger expense. And if you're in, or close, to a major metropolis then space is a premium (and often sold at a similar price). So parking or having your own spot to work on your car can be a hassle. And also Normies are fucking retarded, I get that too.

But who would want to drive a literal rental car everyday (cause even if you're retarded you know how those get treated). But even you can at least decide where you want to go, how to get there and so forth. Then there's finally the supposed "revolution" of self driving cars. If you're so uninterested in driving at that point why even bother owning a car?

IDK, maybe it's just me completely misunderstanding how these things work and how they're used. But outside of stupid congested areas where you can walk to places instead (which is where I mostly see these things and they kinda make sense) they don't make sense to me. It seems more like a tourist thing but a tourist has to be able to GET to the places and would make better plans using existing public transport.

Anyways TL;DR What are /o/'s thoughts on Car Share?

Because in city, if you have a 9-17 job, you watch daytime TV and use your phone mostly for social media, you start seeing transportation as service. Maybe the car services will become like better public transport, you just hop in and tell it where to go. No hastle or care required, seatbelts strongly advised. Though that applies only if you very rarely go outside of city.

Car Share is bullshit, why would you want to drive a car hundreds of strangers have driven before you. Of course, no maintenance on your part required, if something starts smoking of squeaking, you just complain to the company you rent it from.

Frenchie here, I would never say that.

I hate communism and car sharing. But in cities like London or Paris, where using scooters gets you where you wanna go faster than cars, I can understand why people use car sharing platforms and don't own a car. Simply because they never leave their cocoon of a city and never get to carry anything heavy on a long distance. You see, in the USA, a house block has like 3 shops. In France, a block can have 50 shops. So why bother having a car if you can do everything by foot/public transportation? This is even more true if the city has never-ending trafic congestion.

I can relate, I live in the hyper-center of a city and I never have to use a car. So much that I don't even have one at the moment to save money.

Baltanon here. Well, i know plenty of people in cities that do not have a car just because the public transport gets you in 20 minutes anywhere, and bicycles are a thing. Shit, i know one of my friends is a 6 years seasoned taxi driver scrapped his first car, Ford Focus 2000, and never considered buying a car since. Because city has great public transport and if he has to go countryside, call a company cab, so he basically gets rides for half the price on double the distance.

If they follow through with their proposed taxes here, Diesel is going to be more expensive than gasoline.

The consumption still offsets the cost but for how long?

Well then just install gas drive systems! Why the fuck have manufacturers not picked up on this? Shit costs half the price of regular fuels, produces no soot in the engine, and emissions are laughable. Sure, it produces only about half the power of gasoline, but at half the price, what do you expect? If anyone produed baby city-car with it as default system, it would be bought out like hot buns and praised for muh inovations for years to come.

But i guess the oil industry jews just won't let that happen.

Excuse me? Here gas systems are sold as mods you install on top of your regular gasoline system. Basically a gas tank, tiny basic computer, and a sensor and a little hose right in your intake manifold. Not to forget the button to switch it on. No other engine mods required.

Why are they considered less safe? Sure, the gas is under pressure in the tank, and in the event of a massive crash it will all blow out in your boot/under seats, but if the crash is hard enough to break the tank, you will be dead on impact anyway.

Just looked it up, it appears that you can get a special version Prius and some family minivan Merc with gas systems from the factory.

Since when? Must be cheapo driver paradise.

What's the sketchiest gas system you have seen? I have heard legends of somebody just popping a kitchen gas baloon in their car without modifying it. Supposedly keeps it open all the way while driving, uses accelerator pedal as intended. Also that one guy who got on the news for making a natural gas mini-factory in his engine bay. Kept it running on wood. Like a steam engine, but actualy can do highway speeds.

Catalytic converters are not nearly hot enough to ignite it. The reason why they start smelling so bad when hitting the gas after long periods of idling is so much unburnt gas that gets released. It just builds up pressure in the intake and when you hit the pedal, it all gets dumped in the combustion chamber. Due to too much gas, it does not ignite propertly, because no air.

Also diesels can't use propane instead of air, beause it needs oxygen.

In fact, i have not heard of any explosions from gas-equiped vehicles, ever. Maybe because the tanks have safety valves that just close when there is too much flow. And the chance of having any sparks around for the 20 seconds when the gas/air mixture is combustible is just that small. Als they are strong af.

Are you retarded? Other then turbocharger failure, hydrocarbon aspiration is the cause for diesel runaway conditions. If a diesel aspirates a propane air mix, you can bet your ass that it will runaway.

And even if it is perfectly safe,

>it produces only about half the power of gasoline

Utter irredeemable trash. Enjoy your 50 hp vehicle.

But that's the point of gas systems. To let you run your car in the cheapest way possible. Gas is cheap, produces no soot in the engine, makes little power so the engine moving parts are ran in extra long-lasting mode and one 70L tank of gas gets you further than one 70L tank of gasoline.

Diesels beat gas in both power and distance driven per liter, but are considered a bitch to maintain and

> but are considered a bitch to maintain

Because of tolerances.

Gasoline engines can have bigger gaps because the pressure they work on, while still being important, it's not as high as in a diesel and the leaks are less severe. The diesel has to be airtight, because it uses the heat from the pressure to ignite the fuel, other than that.

Apart from that, unless you still have an indirect combustion chamber, the timing can wreck your shit, the valves can hit the piston head fucking up everything in the process, less performance oriented gasoline engines might be able to snap the timing belt without hitting the valves. I wouldn't try experimenting it unless you are 100% sure that the valves and the pistons don't share the same space

And then, there's all the soot clogging your shit, specially clogging the intake valve thanks to the brilliant genius that decided to recirculate exhaust gases into the combustion chamber.

It's bugs wanting all of their needs taken care of for them by other people. They have no sense of ownership. Ownership means having to pay for and maintain something. Having to either be prideful or ashamed of your vehicle.

That means personal accountability. We can't have that in a leftist paradise, now can we?

On the other hand, we as people are extremely keen to give in to what's easiest, rather than what's best. This is just the market providing for our laziness and complacency regarding our own urges.
