It seems every car made these days is full of computers and electronic components that cannot be serviced but that can be hacked by evil doers.

Let's remember some cars from the good old days before the electronic cancer metastasized.

Go back to /tech/, and stop offending me and my my electronic-less 1988 Audi 80.

I prefer coating wings with antirust stuff over having to bring a laptop in workshop to fix some retarded software shit that died while chaning lightbulbs in panel.

Just ordered a new set of switches (the ones on steering column, for lights, turn signals, hazards etc) from scrapyard for 20 euros, they are currently out of them. Will get them when next batch of old Audis come in. Those are on one of 5 switch panels that could die, and it did when i soaked it in water by accident

89-98 had the 12 valve 6BT, it runs fully mechanically. only thing it "needs" is power to a solenoid to cutoff fuel and power for the starter.

both of which could be avoided with a manual trans, a bit of steel line and a spring in the event of an EMP or poorfaggotry.

You got me thinking.

If the battery is completely dead, but the rest of the car is fine. In that situation…

Can you roll the car downhill, thus forcing the generator to turn?

I mean it like this:

>empty battery at the top of the hill

>roll (manual) car downhill

>let it get some speed, then kick it in gear (1st or second, depending on speed, it needs high revs)

>engine will no doubt slow the car down, but since generator is now working it makes power

>moments later you have yourself a spark in sparkplugs, and the engine runs!

Is it possible? I see no reasons not to.

You've seriously never seen anyone start their car with a flat battery before? That's what you're supposed to do in that situation.

Actually, no, if the battery is completely dead you won't start the car like this. You need to charge the battery first.

More likely than not it is in good condition. They were made in years when Audi first discovered anti-rust stuff, and they did not spare it.
Also replacement parts cost nothing, i got both front wings sandwashed,

worked on with antirust stuff and grounded with only 80 euros
Which still is a lot for a student

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

I tend to agree with you but on one hand having electronics support your mechanical systems makes plenty of sense. Things like obd are life savers but having your entire car controlled by a computer that is running closed source software on some rom somewhere is fucking retarded and should be outlawed.

>having your entire car controlled by a computer that is running closed source software on some rom somewhere is fucking retarded

why the FUCK does it have to be closed? like why can't it be directly connected to a laptop and using some software so you can tweak it?

>You can abuse your car and break it

>Safety measures

>Give it to your dealership so they can rip you off

At least just make it open source, it's not illegal.

But what would you want to change in your car? Tweak the engine? Do i even need to start geting into why seemingly the same engines have different power outputs?

Yeah maybe changing the music player layout would be nice, but just think of the problems every car dealer will have once they start getting calls from people who looked up guides on internet and now have made their cars from the beautifull cariage to a pumpkin.
