I don't know how good the cars are gonna be in 2017; I want to see more back-to-basics cars (i.e. no internet-connected hackable death boxes with fly-by-wire pedals). I also wanna see more hot hatches & less SUVs.

Everything you want ( as well as myself) is never coming back. I came to terms with this. It's time you did too.
I hope to get an MX5 NA this year. I do feel a bit bad ditching my current car. she's about to hit 100k and still going strong. I've had her for almost 8 years. Even if she's a FWD auto. I have a lot of memories in that car.

Transmission needs work. Check engine light came on a couple weeks ago and I think there is something up with the throttle. I'd like to change the spark plugs. My air intake was fucked with by a PO and I'd like to fix it/finish the mod I think he was trying to do. Fog lights and interior lights don't work, I'm pretty sure it's just the fuses but I don't know which ones to change because the map in the fusebox is fucked, so I need to find a map to do that. Passenger fender is fucked but I probably won't be able to get more than quote on that fix, since it's purely cosmetic (now it is anyway, the suspension strut was fucked from the impact) and the transmission is much more important. I wanted to get yellow bulbs for head and fog lights but it turns out those are illegal in Oregon… The boost pressure control valve doesn't work quite right but it doesn't affect normal driving so that's further down the list.

The automotive golden age that we all love was weakened in the 90s and struggled to persevere until it was taken out back and beaten to death in 2007. Cars have only gotten closer and closer to being literal bubbles on wheels since then and will continue to do so. Even supercars and motorsports are getting cucked by safety and emissions regulations.

It's pretty sad. As far as new cars go, I only like about 4-6 of them. Even if the EPA was given less power on what what they're doing to cars people don't care about looks.
People really think a computer controlled car is a good idea. Soon getting a car with a stick will be even harder too. And since nothing lasts anymore you'll need a new car every 10 years. My cars been kicking for 22 years. My friends Gran National's been kicking for 30 something years. Us both having a V6 will be a thing of the past and a V8 will be what cars used to have. I know I'm being rather dark about it and I hope I'm wrong, but I don't like the way things are going. Maybe Trump can unfuck the EPA, I don't know.

swapping a manual trans is my main goal, find vibration issue that seems to come and go, fix oil pan leak, delete cat, check OMP, replace all fluids, needs fresh pads all around/brake service, all new bushings/mounts, fix carb and choke cable slack, get AC working, fix blower fan dial, install electric fan as it likes to heat up when it's not moving, clean up the small rust spots.

I agree but it's also paving the way for interesting new tech that's improving emissions (4:26-5:32) while adding power. there's a lot of new valve related stuff going on right now, but I'm mostly excited to see freevalve type of system to come into the OEM and aftermarket. I wouldn't be surprised if it hit diesels first, large companies are always trying to find ways to save money on transport costs.

Koenigsegg does amazing stuff, I too can't wait for their tech to make it into mainstream manufacturing. It will take a major shift in government though to be able to fully take advantage of new tech that is actually beneficial. I wouldn't buy a bubble even if it had a freevalve engine.
I'm not even that concerned about emission regulations, because emission reduction comes hand in hand with increased fuel efficiency as far as I've observed. It's safety standards that do the worst to the driving experience. I guess in 20 years I'll be swapping a freevalve engine into a 90s Nissan.

It looks like a Golf but none of the Golf's had square/rectangular headlights. My best guess: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Derby

That's a Golf with strapped on front from Jetta. Yes, they fit perfectly together. Takes only a welder and saw.
Some owners love their golfs so much, they get second chance after an accident.

They are, but they are different from 80s cars due to increased safety regulations, which snowballed into what we have now.

Everything just feels so damn smooth. This thing glides to 60 in about 6 seconds it's an incredible trade-in from my Civic and I can easily see myself using this guy for another 10 years or more if I keep maintenance up. The build quality on everything is rock solid and the seats are comfy as fuck. I wish I can pictures on me
