d445ac No.4966 [View All]

After escaping from the prison, will you end up in one again? Time to find out! The next part of the 'Another quest' is here!

Chapter Three

You wake up to the sound of loud moans. You're still a little bit dizzy, but at least you can open your eyes now and look around. The first thing you notice is Yumi and Taro across the room, doing something. What they are exactly doing, you can't tell, since a piece of furniture blocks most of the view, but based on the sounds they make, it's probably for the best.

It's time to move on to the second thing you notice, namely why you're standing when you just woke up? The answer is simple: you're chained to the wall. You're also naked and gagged. You can't say you're completely surprised given the circumstances, you kind of expected this… you just hoped she'll be a bit more gentle with you. You check out the chains and the cuffs used to secure you to the wall, but they're made from some kind of metal, it's not like you can escape without getting hold of the keys. The latter seems equally unlikely, since you can barely move an inch. In short, you can't do anything other that producing muffled sounds and jerking the chains.

"Ganache and Singe? They're the original masterminds behind Avenir, so I think you can figure out what they did. Singe is now at Chian's factory, I think you saw him there. Ganache, well, he fled the scene, probably to Lowee. He's a bit younger, and more handsome… but don't worry, he's not my type."

"Let's just enjoy lunch for now. Some Mochi will pair well with the tea, so sure, I'll get some too."

You order your food, IF orders grilled fish with salad, mochi and black tea. You only have to wait a few minutes for your meal, you taste it and… it's very good. Of course, it's not as good as Compa's food, but it's almost as good. There's really no reason to complain, you can't pinpoint a single point where the yakitori is not perfect – it's just that Compa could cook it even better. About the mochi, it's indeed delicious, IF wasn't wrong about it.

You talk a bit with IF while you both finish your tea about uninteresting things. When finished, IF asks for the receipt, and it looks like she's about to pay it alone.

"I guess. Anything specific and easy enough to do for me?"

"I think we should go to a Guild post, we have a few things to take care of and it looks like we have nothing urgent to do right now."

You wait for IF to pay the bill then,

"Thank you IF."

"No problem. Let's go."

You follow IF to a nearby Guild building, you enter it. It's very similar to the one you entered just after escaping from the school, even though it's in a different part of the town. IF walks to the attendant behind the counter, it looks like they know each other and she quickly explains that you need some forms to apply as a Guild agent.

"So Anon, here are two forms, you'll have to fill them before you can accept jobs from the Guild. Also, here is the" she bends over the counter and picks up a thick book, thicker than some encyclopedia, "terms and conditions. I mean, if you have 2 years to spare, because it would take that long to read it. … So just fill the forms then you can select a quest from this screen."

You look at the forms, the first form is mostly about basic personal data, like name, birthday, ID number, education, etc. The second form is more complicated, first it requires you to write down your fighting experience; weapon, magic and potion knowledge, then there's a place to list special abilities. At the bottom of the page they require you to name your mentor.

You look at the screen, there are four quests on it:

"Defeat Dogoos" - Defeat 10 Dogoos - Reward: 100 credits, Healing Grass x3

"Weird Creatures" - Defeat 5 Horsebirds - Reward: 200 credits, Nep Bull, INT Booster

"Save the princess" - Defeat Ancient Dragon - Reward: 500 credits, SP Charger x2, Nep Bull x2

"A Special kind of Pudding" - Collect 5 Exhausted Jellies - Reward: 200, STR Booster x2, Healing Grass

You can be creative when filling out the form, unless, of course, you refuse to sign it.

<special abilities: nothing worth mentioning.

It's better to write it truthfully, so guild won't demand too much from you.

"About the quests… how strong Horsebirds are? And are exhausted jellies hard to get?"

"Alright, Planeptune dungeons first then Lastation dungeons then."

"Let's go!"

You arrive at a big square with an even bigger building on the other side. The square is filled with people, you have to stay close to IF if you don't want to lose her.

Approaching the building it becomes clear, that building is the station.

"This place is packed with people, where are the Dogoos?"

"Just follow me, you'll see it shortly."

You walk around the building, and behind it you find a small alley, closed with yellow-black striped tape.

"Here's the entrance. Are you ready?"

"Yes."

You enter the closed area and after a bit of walking you reach the other end of the alley. It ends at another square, much smaller, but this one is filled with Dogoos instead of people.

"So here we are, there are plenty of Dogoos here. Do you need any preparation? I think you should be able to handle them, I'll stay here of course, but try to defeat them alone. You can try that lonely Dogoo to the left, unless you're confident enough to try that group of three over there."

"Area attack, using a bow, hmm. You don't know magic, right? Unless you can somehow shoot 100 arrows at the same time, I don't know… Okay, just shoot at this lonely Dogoo and I'll try to think of something."

You aim at the Dogoo and shoot. It has 20HP, damage 1d20-6 except if 1->hit IF, 20->critical hit, instant kill.

You shoot the Dogoo, but you barely miss it. Since it's still far away, you have time to shoot a second time. Critical hit! You hit the Dogoo right in his eye, killing it on the spot. It drops 5 Credits upon death.

"Nice shot. So, say, are you feeling adventurous? Do you want to experiment with some magic?"

>So, say, are you feeling adventurous?

"Yes."

>"Do you want to experiment with some magic?"

"Sure. I'll try it out. What do you have in mind?"

"Something basic… Do you have a staff? No? Me neither. Don't worry, you don't need a staff to cast spells, it just makes it a little easier. So just do what I say. Look at that Dogoo, focus on it. Now imagine fires creeping up from the ground, roasting that enemy alive. How raise your hand, feel the power flowing through body, concentrating in your hands, ready to fire off. Do you feel the warmth in your arms?"

"…no?"

"Don't worry, just concentrate. Imagine the power leaving your hands as a big sphere of fire, directed toward the Dogoo; upon impact it detonates, setting nearby objects on fire. Are you ready? 3, 2, 1, fire!"

Huh? You don't have time to think about it, you try to concentrate and imagine that fireball and…

You feel the power of your body leaving through your hand, warming it up in the progress. Ouch, it's too hot! The whole world starts to tremble around you, enough to lose your balance and fall on the ground. You hear the noises of the nearby walls cracking. You start to cough due to the dust in the air, you need a few seconds until you can regain your senses and check your surroundings.

The Dogoos from the square disappeared, instead there is a single, huge Dogoo, right in front of you, already charging toward you.

"What's this!? Hey, Anon, stand back, it's too dangerous for you!"

"Not this shit again."

>"What's this!? Hey, Anon, stand back, it's too dangerous for you!"

"I know!"

You stand back to the end of the alley and you try to imagine a big lightning, which strikes the big Dogoo. You try to concentrate the power in your body, just like you did it before, getting ready to unleash it at the right moment.

The Dogoo attacks and hits IF, dealing 70 HP damage. Due to the sudden rage you release every bit of your power, hitting the Dogoo with your magic attack. It's so bright that it almost blinds you, it's so hot that it almost burns you as the electric discharge hits the monster.

It's a success, the massive impact sent the huge Dogoo flying toward the wall on the other side, but you can't rejoice yet. Your legs suddenly became heavy, you can't stand on your own, you collapse on the ground. You catch a glimpse of IF dealing a final blow to the Dogoo before you lose your consciousness.

End of Chapter Three

One random question, what should I do about the battles? It's pretty random and arbitrary how it works right now. Some proper system for stats with character sheets and d20 and shit would help probably, but I don't think I'm qualified for that.

Let's put it this way, if we do combat via ala-DnD we'll take forever. Just rolling a d20 to determine how well combat goes is good enough.

I host a weekly game, and it takes us maybe 2 hours to get through a single encounter… maybe because I have 6 players.

I doubt that this is good idea.

Just using dices to determine how combat goes, story branching and maybe some ability checks is good enough.

To add to my comment about the d20, depending on our choices you can add in modifiers to make things easier or harder.

If we've been mostly focusing on magical abilities, if the situation calls for physical prowess, we have zero for a modifier, or god forbid a negative modifier, on the flip side if it calls for magic, we might have additional modifiers. The modifiers would help even out the innate randomness of a d20.

Also with zero modifiers, the difficulty check for our magical adventure was a 75% failure rate. So being able to do that should mean something, or it might not, depends on you.

Hey, I'm still alive, new thread here: >>5644

This chapter didn't end at the best time, since I think there will be a period around the end of October when I won't be able to post too much, but I didn't want to wait with the next chapter that long. Welp.
