The following morning, while Rachael slept in, John made them both a simple meal out of the leftovers from yesterday’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He thought it should be fine for one more day. He also took two large sacks of wheat flour fresh from the miller- he wondered what poor mamono woman ended up capturing that curmudgeon- to use for bartering along with his silver coinage. He wasn’t sure about mamono customs and didn’t want to ask in this case, but he found a few bolts of colorful and unused cloth to present as gifts to his new in-laws.
Returning to his wife to rouse her, John swiftly realized that his bride was not a morning person. Despite her most heated protestations, he managed to get her to her feet, cleaned off a bit, and dressed. In no time at all, and with blissfully few follow-on complaints, they were out the door and on their way.
For the sake of time, Rachael had demanded that John ride on Tess with some of their belongings, while she hiked alongside with the rest carried on her back. It went against every fiber of his being to allow himself, as the man, to be led on a horse like some princess. This was doubly the case while his new bride had no choice but to trudge along on foot through grass, dirt, and rocks. Although it might have been impossible for Tess to bear the weight of his hellhound wife for any serious length of time, that didn’t mean that John couldn’t walk along side her.
Yet there was nothing to be done for it save to swallow his pride and sulk in silence. Rachael had made it abundantly clear that if he so much as thought of stepping one foot off of Tess, she wouldn’t hesitate to tie him to the saddle.
Although he would only admit it to himself, he had to agree that Rachael had the right idea. Given that he was a one-legged cripple with a crutch and a fake leg that had stopped fitting correctly on account of its mamono sex-magic powered growth, he would no doubt considerably slow their progress over the rough and uneven terrain. Rachael, on the other hand, had no trouble running alongside Tess at a full jog for lord only knew how long, all while carrying as much weight as the horse could. He also clearly understood why she had said hellhounds had no use for shoes. She could walk over anything at all and it bothered her not in the slightest.
While stopping to rest, east, and relieve themselves, she did, however, enjoy having the paw pads on her feet cleaned and rubbed, showing that while possessing considerable fortitude, she was not entirely immune to the aches and pains of long distances and harsh conditions. That he offered at all surprised himself as much as it did her, John could tell. Call it his nature, his ambivalent attitude toward life, but he figured that anything less than his complete and enthusiastic consent was completely pointless at this juncture, the time for that having long since passed. He would make the best of his new life by offering a warm gesture to his lifelong companion. Such niceties had become easier as he got to know Rachael, who was fast making it apparent that, while a complete asshole most of the time, she was a genuinely nice person on the inside. Add to that that he would be spending quite a bit of time with this woman for the foreseeable future while she raised his children, then there was nothing left for John to do but his part towards ensuring their relationship work.
On the road again, then a night in a makeshift tent where their lovemaking was slower, more meticulous than before, yet somehow even more intense. The following morning, they rose with the morning sun. John hadn’t realized just how cold the crisp mountain air could be after having spent the night in what could almost have been a sauna. The woman’s heat obviously couldn’t be natural, so he resolved to ask if she could turn it down at some point. Otherwise his nights would get very uncomfortable if she insisted using him as a pillow.

In only a few short hours, and after a simple breakfast on the road, Rachael had guided them to the non-descript location deep in the woods at the foot of a small mountain. They had traveled no path that John recognized, nevertheless there always seemed to be enough room for his horse to walk comfortably without having to worry about branches, logs, rocks, or other hindrances. After a time, John had concluded that they were indeed walking on a path, but one so cleverly disguised that even those walking along it could never be too sure of its true nature.
“We’re here,” said Rachael, “Finally home. Almost.”
John dismounted. He saw no signs of this Mamono town, nor any path that might lead there, nor any other signs of civilization whatsoever. He suspected some form of magic hid the town from prying Imperial eyes. Mamono possessed many impressive magic users within their ranks, and even the lowliest of them had some degree of magical ability. Obscuring a town would be no challenge for them at all.
“Up there?” John asked, pointing up the mountain.
“No,” Rachael said with a smile, “It is the mountain.”
“Impossible,” he replied. He shook his head, not wanting to believe it, but at the same time unwilling to completely discount it. “This is Mount Dorienacht. It’s always been here.”
Rachael shrugged. “Our Lady leveled it some time ago and built our city in its place.”
“The lilim,” John whispered, reaching a hand towards the air in front of him. It seemed to shimmer like water while the scenery faded like fog.
“Not ‘the’ lilim, ‘a’ lilim,” said Rachael. “Each is a daughter of Lilith. She was the First and True wife of Adam, who she finally reclaimed and returned to her side to rule in Pandemonium. In a sense, that’s the basis for our claim to all men. Descendants of Eve have no place with the descendants of Adam. After all, marriage is a sacrament that cannot be torn asunder by man or God. You belong to us.”
“That’s the most scholarly argument for rape I think I have ever heard,” he replied, carefully climbing back onto Tess.
Rachael shrugged, “What can I say? I didn’t become a brigadier by being an idiot.”
“I keep forgetting that,” said John, “You know you’re much, much higher ranking than me, right?”
