From what I've heard (and I don't know if this makes much sense) Kemono Friends was never supposed to do well, Kadokawa basically put it out to die and when it didn't they took Tatsuki off the project as punishment. I guess now they're trying to both cash in and kill it for good. It's all very strange.

Kemono friends was a shitty mobile game that died off before Kadokawa made the animoo they were contractually forced to make, so they just let Tatsuki do it since it was whatever.
They were pleasantly surprised it did well, the reason why they fired Tatsuki is because he didn't want to bow down, give them the 3D models he made on his own spare time, and because he made that last episode that he put up on youtube, so Kadokawa got pissed off and fired him.
In any case, he wouldn't have made season 2, when they heard it was going well their plan was to take it off of him and give the second season to one of their fuckboy pet directors instead.

Big companies aren't big because they are good, they are big because they were, in some way, good, that's the difference.
Take a look at Yahoo, for example, a really fun company to work at back then, according to some people who worked back near it's inception, that made great products. Back then the people in charge were the ones who pretty much made that company rise up out of hard soil, they were the ones that deserved to be in charge, then they got some new people in, people who thought they knew what they were doing and everything else was wrong, got a female CEO, not because she as a person was particularly fit for the job, but because she had a vagina and that was popular. What happened was that the increasingly shitty changes in the company drove what little talent wasn't already snuffed out, making the company soar the skies like Malaysia airlines.
A few years after rejecting an offer of almost 200 billion dollars, the company was sold for only 5 billion.
That's how business work. You make something great then you pass it on to some retard kid, because you're a friend of his dad and you owe him one, only for him to ram it to the ground.

But seriously season two wasn't awful and the new characters were great. The story of the first characters ended with season one. It was time for a new story. Season two was a huge success in Japan, and the season three announcement was met with much celebration. You should be happy a good show like Kemono Friends is sticking around in the age of isekai garbage.
