Likely both, but I think Lizards are more taught, mainly from duels and their travels as mentioned in MGE. Salamanders are more natural (or self-taught), given with their usual environment (volcanic lands), which suggests to me that they survive by any means and get better over time. One thing they share in common is that they seek strong males in order to raise a stronger generation afterwards, which tells me that they're naturally good at fighting.

I just had a thought, lizard girls and to a lesser extant salamanders, tend to have the childhood friend characteristics: pony tail, tend to be strong willed, have a plain appeal (leotard for the lizard girl, utilitarian bikini for the salamander, and other practical clothing); a reason to stick with a person for a while (if not strong/capable enough she would get you in to shape either mentally or physically, if equal she would just stay with you because it is fun, and if you are stronger she will basically have you all to her self); it is much harder to compete with different girls due to relativity plain nature (again lizard girl are plain when compared to mamodos even to your standard run of the mill succubus and the salamander has her fire but that is about it). While I agree with you that they're hardly practical for combat, I'll like to argue that bikini is only slight better than leotard for combat - or for movement, at least.

The reason is that the leotard tend to be a stretchy and tight material, I think it'll cause sore spots or burns on the lizard girl's body over time if she fights and moves too much - limiting the leotard's combat usage.

Comparing that to salamander's bikini, bikinis seems to be more loose and tied up with strings. Sure, it could be more susceptible to falling apart from a cut across the string, but you play a game of risk - you get her being embarrassed/stunned, you get distracted by her beauty, or she gets excited by the close slash.

That said, for combat, they both could use medium or light armour as they appear to be focused on speed and evasion for their fights.They do possess natural defense, at least, in salamander's case, she has her scales covering her legs and arms.

The idea of Salamanders in the modern day make me so happy I'm in a medieval combat sport and study hema. I have this headcanon that a lot of salamanders actually have no idea how to fight effectively and I get to be the guy that gives one the fight of her life.
