I found nothing in the game. The laughing I heard did not originate from the game, it was a spooky ghost girl fiddling with my game, I know it. I just wish contact with her was easier, we could play together, it'd be so comfy.

You are a private detective, you're in debt to some loan sharks and legbreakers, the newspapers made you the wrong kind of famous after you crossed the wrong guy (some godfather in the chabad jewish mafia), and you got every scumbag that ever lived or died in the city after you.
But it's been worse, way worse, before you were a PI, you were a detective for the police, you were the only good cop in this stinking hellhole, with the added misfortune of being good at doing his job too, truth is, you always had a little help.
before that you were in the special forces, when you were just a kid, you went to the mother of all wars, drafted in some new conscription service prepared just for the times, you had two options, service or prison, and you knew that for you, prison was a good as a death sentence.
The war you were in a gang of delinquents, they were your brothers in that rotten foster home for boys, they were the only family you ever knew, you crossed some real bad guys trying to do some good for a change, you took a knife to the heart for the trouble, while you were sleeping - that's when you discovered your special "talent". with a little help from your new "friends", a clique of wannabe heroes with a deathwish managed to take down the biggest gang in the local area.
It's pouring rain outside, you closed the office for the night to enjoy your bottle of booze before heading home, before you could pop the cap, a knock comes rapping at your doors, the front is locked, the alarm hasn't triggered, and the camera feed picked up nothing, whoever your client is, they aren't breathing.
"Go Away, I'm closed"

They used to scare the shit out of you, but now it's just annoying, sure, they can hurt you, and only you, but you can sure as hell hurt them back, and they won't try nothing unless they got a reason to - as for the crazy ones, those are the most fun to talk to, all sorts of juicy secrets tend to hide amidst the madness.

It's true, about half the time, your clients are dead, they often pay when they can, though it's usually someone else's by then, they help you steal it, sometimes they pay with information, a valuable commodity, though one that doesn't pay the bills on it's own, however, most of the time you're working for free, part of the reason you're in debt is that they won't leave you alone unless you help them, you never saw one pass on, typically they thank you, repay you if they can, and go away, you've heard it happens though, it seems rare, like they have to earn it.
"I think I've been murdered"
the voice continues, you pick up on something, she's crying.
it may be typical for the newly restless, but it always hit you right in the heart (which s funny, because you only got a fake where the real thing used to be).
you make your way to the door, open it up, and see the typical horror movie female ghost, she's got her face in her hands, and she seems at the verge of breaking down.
"hey, hey, hey, now, it's alright"
you try to comfort her, you distract her by telling some off-color jokes to lighten her up, restless tend to enjoy making light of morbidity.
she's smiling and laughing, joking around with you.
she's pretty, despite the corpse appearance and the bleeding slice across her throat.
but now you have to get to business, "tell me your story", you ask.
There wasn't much to tell, she woke up, dead, and knowing she shouldn't be, she was in the middle of the stage in an abandoned theater, all that was left was a card with only a strange symbol on it.
"can you tell me what this symbol looked like?"
she carefully describes it as you sketch it out on a piece of paper, at one point, she stops, points to it and says "that's it!, that's the one exactly!" she has a huge smile on her face, "so what does it mean?".

Judging from their M.O. The girl was a sacrifice to create a physical form for the nameless, and then they ate her body.

they eat nothing but human beings, and they never had to go to the bathroom in the time you were undercover.
it would be suicide to take these assholes on alone, even for you, you know that magic is no joke, and you're just a psychic with a gun, even then your psychic abilities are just at a "normal" level of power (for a psychic) at best, but her, just, her.
you're kicking yourself, but you just fell in love for the first time, and it's with a restless, she seems into you as well, flirting, getting touchy.
She's a good girl, at the very least you could try to find out who she is (or was).
it's a good thing you got useful friends, you pick up the phone and dial up an old partner of yours from the police days, she's a magic user, though she'd refer to herself as a "researcher in the arcane sciences", a really powerful one, so powerful, the cultists are afraid of her, she's got some good friends as well, a girl who can become anything, anyone, anytime, the result of a lab experiment and an intern who got her coffee spiked with the "shaper's serum" by her boss (and lesbian crush), and an unkillable electricity-eating zombie chick stuck in her teens, who happens to have only one of her original piece(s) remaining, that piece being her brain, everything else was taken from a variety of other girls, yes, she is a Frankenstein-ian monster created by a certain Arcane Scientist that acts as her "mom", being unaging zombiegirl is always in her rebellious teen phase, and her "mother" quite enjoys it.
The four of you get together, hash out the issue before succumbing to the need for sleep, and spend the next day sleeping in the lab.
Upon nightfall, you gather together and begin making plans.
you know the bad guys use a different location every night, and that they cover their tracks pretty well, but not well enough, they use the dark web to direct each other, and so the shapeshifter easily tracked them online, cracked their almost perfect encryption, and got them to send her the location and time of the next ritual, she discovered the ghost was part of an idol group that they kidnapped, she was the first sacrifice, and the others are next up - they seem convinced that once all of the maidens were given to the nameless, that the nameless would arrive.

This is a pretty good set up for a magic detective story. But I do have a little critique. The last section starting with “You’re kicking yourself…” feels rushed. You suddenly have your character saying he’s fallen in love with the ghost but you haven’t really shown how or why he would other than him cracking a few jokes and thinking she’s pretty.
When it comes to our detective’s 3 new partners their introductions seem a bit hamfisted. We only get a brief description of them and who they are, how they know our investigator, and why and how they help on such short notice. Also the end bit about the dark web and encryption instead of ground work seems a bit out of place to me. But other than that you have an excellent set up so far and I want to read more.

Been watching "Wishfart" lately, heroine Akiko is ~900 year old ghost from ancient Japan (died in plague that wiped out village). She's clearly friendzoned by caucasian Leprechaun Dez who pines for a mermaid negress named Tsuni who works in the local comic shop. Akiko doesn't pine overtly but she's clearly annoyed any time Dez gets googly eyed over Tsuni, but despite that, actually tries to help Dez get Tsuni…
Interesting thing is in episode where Dez's childhood shoes come to life (they have girl voices and tongues… is there a type of monster girl for that? they were cute…) they dare him to go streaking so he does… and Akiko joins in and removes her robe… revealing that all she has underneath is a floating head and a pair of hands…
That's enough for me.
