Defense contractor pleads guilty to sharing classified info with person linked to Hezbollah

WASHINGTON — A woman who worked as a contract linguist for the U.S. military in Iraq pleaded guilty Friday to sharing classified information with a romantic interest linked to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Mariam Taha Thompson was arrested last year in an espionage case that investigators said put the lives of American military members and confidential sources at risk and represented a significant breach of classified information.

Thompson, 63 and formerly of Rochester, Minnesota, pleaded guilty to a single count of delivering national defense information to aid a foreign government. She admitted as part of a deal that she shared the names of U.S. government assets with a Lebanese man with connections to Hezbollah.

Assistant Attorney General John Demers, the Justice Department’s top national security official, said in a statement that the actions represented “a disgraceful personal and professional betrayal of country and colleagues.”

Sentencing was scheduled for June 23. A lawyer for Thompson, who faces up to life in prison, did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

Thompson began communicating with the man, whom she never met in person, in 2017 after being connected via social media by a family member, and she ultimately developed a romantic interest in him, prosecutors said.

After a January 2020 U.S. strike that killed Iran’s top general, Qassem Soleimani, the Lebanese man — who is not named in court papers — asked Thompson to provide “them” with information about the human assets that had helped the U.S. target Soleimani.

Investigators say Thompson accessed dozens of files about human sources, including their names, photographs, background information and operational cables that described the information they had gathered. She agreed to provide the classified information to the man; officials say she had planned to marry him, and was afraid he would end her relationship if she did not cooperate.

It’s June 27, 2017. Adam Banks has just returned from honeymoon and is back in his role as chief technology and information officer of Maersk, the Danish transport and logistics giant, best known for its shipping containers.

Without warning, Banks finds himself in the position that no IT leader — indeed no executive — ever wishes to encounter: facing a serious malware attack that compromises most of the company’s systems and applications while wiping out its access to almost all of its data.

Two years on, Banks is willing to outline the scale of the destruction he encountered as what later become known as the NotPetya malware took hold and the company’s operations ground to a halt. “All end-user devices, including 49,000 laptops and print capability, were destroyed,” he says. “All of our 1,200 applications were inaccessible and approximately 1,000 were destroyed. Data was preserved on back-ups but the applications themselves couldn’t be restored from those as they would immediately have been re-infected. Around 3,500 of our 6,200 servers were destroyed — and again they couldn’t be reinstalled.”

The U.S. Department of State yesterday informed the Hong Kong authorities that the United States-Hong Kong International Shipping Agreement (Shipping Agreement) has been suspended or terminated—the exact treatment is not yet clear.

The State Department made its announcement pursuant to Executive Order 13936 (July 14, 2020), which reflects growing tensions between the United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) regarding the PRC’s rule over Hong Kong.

United States-Hong Kong International Shipping Agreement suspended

The Secretary of State prior to 2020 concluded in each of the Section 301 Reports that Hong Kong maintained a sufficient degree of autonomy to justify continued treatment under the General Policy Rule, although the 2019 Section 301 Report noted that the degree of Hong Kong’s autonomy had been “diminished.”[12] No president has exercised authority under Section 202(a) of the Hong Kong Policy Act to suspend the application the General Policy Rule until July 14, 2020, when President Trump issued Executive Order 13936 suspending the General Policy Rule for certain purposes. The executive order was issued in response to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s 2020 Section 301 Report (issued on May 28, 2020) in which Mr. Pompeo made a section 205 certification stating that “I can no longer certify that Hong Kong continues to warrant [special] treatment.”[13]

Section 3(j) of Executive Order 13936 states in pertinent part that:

Within 15 days of this order, the heads of agencies shall commence all appropriate actions to further the purposes of this order consistent with applicable law, including to … give notice of intent to terminate the agreement for the reciprocal exemption with respect to taxes on income from the international operation of ships effected by the Exchange of Notes Between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of Hong Kong (TIAS 11892)[.][14]

Where C4 and C5 curve the wrong way and press against the spinal cord. The white surrounding the cord is spinal fluid. There is none between the cord and the bulge-bad. The thin white line in the cord at the bulge is an fluid edema-bad. Your x-ray shows how the curve of the neck vertebrae should be-good. My MRI shows no smooth curve-bad. I couldn't find the image but I have a flat spot in the spinal cord where the disk pushes against the cord-bad.

'Data from millions of Telfort customers accessible to Chinese company Huawei'

The Chinese company Huawei has had unlimited access to data from millions of Telfort customers. The company was able to extract customer files from Telfort's data. KPN, the parent company of Telfort, already knew about this in 2011, but did little else with the discovery, writes De Volkskrant.

Huawei was responsible for Telfort's customer and billing environment. KPN did research on this in 2011, which would have brought up 'disturbing signals'. Huawei would have had access to all customer data, unlimited and without any supervision. The Chinese company had given itself the position to consult it at all times, and did so.

Following the findings in 2011, KPN did not conduct any further investigation into Huawei's access and relocation of customer files. Customers were also not informed and no notification was made to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens). The latter was not compulsory at the time.

According to KPN, there was 'no reason to assume that data from Telfort customers had been stolen, by anyone'. The systems are no longer in use and according to the KPN 'all improvement measures' have been followed up and implemented in the following years.

'AIVD warned against Chinese espionage'

What makes this situation possibly worrying is that KPN has been warned several times about espionage from China. According to the AIVD, several files of Chinese spy groups matched those of KPN, which may indicate that the files of the KPN were leaked to the spy groups. The AIVD would have discovered a 'hidden path' towards KPN data and Huawei would be the only one who could access that data.

Espionage from China has long been a concern for intelligence services. Telecom companies are a wanted target because of the huge amount of data they own.

Huawei partially excluded on 5G network

The Dutch government also fears espionage from China via Huawei. For example, the company is excluded from the most sensitive parts of new 5G networks, but is still allowed to supply network equipment. Britain does not allow that at all, the country has officially banned the Chinese company. Belgium also has plans to ban Huawei.

Oxford University May Scrap Sheet Music for Being Complicit in ‘White Supremacy’

The University of Oxford is considering proposals that would remove sheet music from its curriculum over woke claims that teaching the Western form of musical notation has roots in “colonialism” and “complicity in white supremacy”.

In response to widespread Black Lives Matter protesters and riots last year in the United Kingdom, music educators at Oxford University have joined the wider iconoclastic movement which has been sweeping through British academia.

The music department at the prestigious and ancient university has seen calls to remove music notation from the curriculum as professors seek to focus less on white European heritage and culture, according to documents seen by The Telegraph.

The woke educators went on to claim that musical notation itself is a “colonialist representational system” that has “complicity to white supremacy”. The claim is similar to leftist pronouncements in America that mathematics is inherently racist.

The Oxford academics went on to pronounce that teaching the piano or conducting orchestras could cause “students of colour great distress” as the skills involved are closely tied to “white European music”.

Professors at the university said that the classical music which is taught at Oxford, which includes Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert, among others, is too focused on “white European music from the slave period”.

The assertion is somewhat dubious, as Western classical music, as well as the practice of sheet music notation, predates the Atlantic slave trade, stemming back to musical traditions from the medieval period such as Gregorian chanting.
