Upon further investigation, Tigard Police Officers attempted to arrest the suspect, Jacob Ryan McDuff, age 26, for domestic violence.

December Employment Report: 140 Thousand Jobs LOST, 6.7% Unemployment Rate
Total nonfarm payroll employment declined by 140,000 in December, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.7 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The decline in payroll employment reflects the recent increase in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases and efforts to contain the pandemic. In December, job losses in leisure and hospitality and in private education were partially offset by gains in professional and business services, retail trade, and construction.

The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for October was revised up by 44,000, from +610,000 to +654,000, and the change for November was revised up by 91,000, from +245,000 to +336,000. With these revisions, employment in October and November combined was 135,000 more than previously reported. In December, the year-over-year change was negative 9.37 million jobs.
Total payrolls decreased by 140 thousand in December. Private payrolls decreased by 95 thousand.
Payrolls for October and November were revised up 135 thousand combined. The Labor Force Participation Rate was unchanged at 61.5% in December. This is the percentage of the working age population in the labor force. The unemployment rate was unchanged in December at 6.7%.
This was well below consensus expectations, however October and November were revised up by 135,000 combined.

Dominion Voting Systems on Friday filed a defamation lawsuit seeking $1.3 billion in damages against Sidney Powell, a pro-Trump lawyer who has pushed unfounded conspiracy theories alleging that the company was involved in an international communist plot to rig the election against President Trump.

LOS ANGELES – Tommy Lasorda, the son of Italian immigrants and a professional pitcher who became a legendary Dodgers manager, global baseball ambassador and national treasure, died on Thursday. He was 93.
Commissioner Rob Manfred issued the following statement:
“Tommy Lasorda was one of the finest managers our game has ever known. He loved life as a Dodger. His career began as a pitcher in 1949 but he is, of course, best known as the manager of two World Series champions and four pennant-winning clubs. His passion, success, charisma and sense of humor turned him into an international celebrity, a stature that he used to grow our sport. Tommy welcomed Dodger players from Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Japan, South Korea and elsewhere – making baseball a stronger, more diverse and better game. He served Major League Baseball as the Global Ambassador for the first two editions of the World Baseball Classic and managed Team USA to gold in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Tommy loved family, the United States, the National Pastime and the Dodgers, and he made them all proud during a memorable baseball life.
“I am extremely fortunate to have developed a wonderful friendship with Tommy and will miss him. It feels appropriate that in his final months, he saw his beloved Dodgers win the World Series for the first time since his 1988 team. On behalf of Major League Baseball, I send my deepest sympathy to his wife of 70 years, Jo, and their entire family, the Dodger organization and their generations of loyal fans.”
In three seasons as a Major League pitcher, Lasorda went 0-4 and reminded nobody of Sandy Koufax, who replaced him on the Brooklyn roster. But as the Dodgers manager for two decades, Lasorda crafted a body of work that earned him a place alongside Koufax in baseball’s Hall of Fame.
He died after serving in his 71st season with the Dodgers, an extraordinary display of loyalty. He spent the last two decades as a special advisor to the chairman (currently Mark Walter), having been rescued by previous chairman Frank McCourt from an exile imposed when News Corp. bought the club from Peter O’Malley and his sister, Terry Seidler.

Deutsche Bank to agree to pay $100 million over bribery charges- NYT
Germany's Deutsche Bank is expected to agree to pay more than $100 million to settle charges related to allegedly violating anti-bribery laws as it tried to win business in places like China, The New York Times reported on Friday.
Deutsche Bank is expected to enter into a so-called deferred prosecution agreement in Brooklyn federal court, the report added, citing a person familiar with the matter. Such an agreement would be the latest black eye for Deutsche Bank, which has been repeatedly penalized in recent years for its involvement with money laundering and for violating international sanctions. The German bank in 2019 agreed to pay the Securities and Exchange Commission $16 million to resolve allegations that it used corrupt means to win business in China and Russia.
The New York Times reported in 2019 that Deutsche Bank had for years lavished Chinese leaders with expensive gifts and paid millions of dollars to politically connected consultants as the bank tried to raise its profile and land lucrative deals in China.
An agreement between Deutsche Bank and the Justice Department would resolve a long-running investigation just days before President Trump leaves office. For the past two decades, the German bank has been Mr. Trump’s primary lender; he currently owes Deutsche Bank more than $300 million.

Global index providers follow Wall Street, remove Chinese telecom stocks
US index publisher MSCI and others – FTSE Russell and S&P Dow Jones Indices – announced the removal of Chinese telecom firms from their benchmarks over the US’ investment ban, triggering massive sell-off of the affected stocks.
MSCI was the latest to announce that Hong-Kong-traded securities of three Chinese companies – China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom Hong Kong – will be dropped from its indices, with the decision effective as of the close of business on Friday. Similar statements were earlier made by its British peer FTSE Russell and S&P Dow Jones Indices, with the two compilers due to drop the telecom trio not later than Monday.
All three providers cited US President Donald Trump’s order that prohibits Americans from owning or trading the securities of Chinese companies that the US claims have links to China’s military. The ban, which was introduced in November, targets over 30 firms, and has already resulted in the removal of other Chinese corporations from the global indices. Chinese corporate titans Alibaba and Tencent could also be added to the investment ban, further flaring tensions between the world’s largest economies.

The index publishers had to drop the Chinese telecom majors following the delisting decision of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), which changed its mind over the firms three times in just one week, but finally returned to the initial plan to delist their shares, creating confusion among investors and triggering wild swings in stock prices.
Though investors still have several months until November 11 to divest, the stocks of all three firms had steep losses on Friday. China Mobile shares hit a more than 14-year low and lost over four percent in Hong Kong. Similar losses were seen in China Telecom shares, while China Unicom fell by 11 percent. The sell-off wiped out over $5 billion in the affected firms’ value in Hong Kong, according to Reuters.
As some investors, including Americans, rushed to shed their holdings of the blacklisted stocks, others used the opportunity to find bargains. Mainland holdings of shares in some of the affected companies nearly tripled, Reuters said citing stock exchange operator Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd.
Some investors who see the current situation as a buying opportunity say that the course of events may change as soon as Trump officially leaves office, while others say that even if the ban stays in place, it has nothing to do with the fundamentals of the affected firms. Moreover, China may benefit from the US delisting, as the firms kicked off of US exchanges have or will have secondary listings in Hong Kong, making the market even more attractive.

Thank You to Members Defending Democracy: On Wednesday evening, following an horrific assault on our Democracy, our Democratic Caucus showed to the country and to the world that we would not be diverted from our duty to validate the election of President-elect Joe Biden. Despite the desecration of the temple of our democracy, the House upheld its responsibility to the Constitution and to the American people. My deepest gratitude goes to our scholars – Reps. Raskin, Lofgren, Schiff, and Neguse – and to the delegations of Arizona and Pennsylvania facing objections who made the case for respecting the will of the American people.
Capitol Police: It is with great sadness that I also write to share the news that a twelve-year veteran of the U.S. Capitol Police, Officer Brian Sicknick, died after defending the Capitol complex and protecting all who serve and work here. The perpetrators of Officer Sicknick’s death must be brought to justice. Five people have now died because of the act of insurrection. This is a stain on our nation’s history.
While we are appreciative of the bravery of the Capitol Police, we are disappointed in the lack of leadership. For that reason I called upon the Chief of the Capitol Police to resign, and he has. I have also accepted the resignation of the House Sergeant-at-Arms. Chair Lofgren will discuss on our noon Caucus call how we will move forward with responding to the failures that allowed this tragedy to happen.
Removing the President From Office: As you know, there is growing momentum around the invocation of the 25th Amendment, which would allow the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet to remove the President for his incitement of insurrection and the danger he still poses. Yesterday, Leader Schumer and I placed a call with Vice President Pence, and we still hope to hear from him as soon as possible with a positive answer as to whether he and the Cabinet will honor their oath to the Constitution and the American people.
Nearly fifty years ago, after years of enabling their rogue President, Republicans in Congress finally told President Nixon that it was time to go. Today, following the President’s dangerous and seditious acts, Republicans in Congress need to follow that example and call on Trump to depart his office – immediately. If the President does not leave office imminently and willingly, the Congress will proceed with our action.
Preventing an Unhinged President From Using the Nuclear Codes: This morning, I spoke to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley to discuss available precautions for preventing an unstable president from initiating military hostilities or accessing the launch codes and ordering a nuclear strike. The situation of this unhinged President could not be more dangerous, and we must do everything that we can to protect the American people from his unbalanced assault on our country and our democracy.
Resources for Responding to Trauma: The attack on Wednesday had a great traumatic effect on Members and congressional employees. I have asked the Attending Physician to provide Members with information about access to counseling. You should shortly be receiving a Dear Colleague from the Office of the Attending Physician and the Office of Employee Assistance.
I am very grateful to Members for your communications regarding what you think should happen. I take your suggestions very seriously as we build consensus in our Caucus as we go forward.

Hungarians Launch Anti-Censorship Social Media Network
A newly launched Hungarian social media network claims it wants to create a censorship-free platform with a million users in a country of ten million people by the end of the year.
The new network, named Hundub, has attracted 40,000 subscribers so far after launching on December 6th, 2020, to a Hungarian audience. It is seen as a close homage to Facebook but has promised to provide users with an environment free of censors, beyond what is illegal under Hungarian law.
According to a report from French newspaper La Croix, the network has some differences from Facebook, including a button that allegedly encourages users to post politically incorrect images on the platform.
Csaba Pàl, the founder of the network, said he was surprised at the platform’s rapid growth. However, some have criticised Hundub’s launch; others have even claimed that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is secretly behind the network, which the creators have denied.
The new social media company’s formation comes after members of Orbán’s party, the conservative Fidesz, have clashed with Facebook, including Justice Minister Judit Varga.

In December, Varga accused Facebook of manipulating and changing its algorithms to decrease the number of interactions with her Facebook page. She also discussed the role of social media in the upcoming 2022 national election.
“We see what is happening in the world, we see that the power groups behind global tech companies can even make choices. We must not be naive, we must be prepared for any eventuality and the operations and decisions of these global companies must be made transparent,” she said.
Facebook later responded to the accusations, stating that the company had not taken any actions against her social media page.
While Hundub states it will be free from censorship, swastikas and the communist hammer and sickle symbol are both banned from the platform due to it operating under Hungarian law. The site’s creators hope to attract a million users by the end of 2021, in a country of around ten million.
Big Tech censorship had been a significant issue in the United States, where many social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, and Google are based.
In November, conservative political commentator Tucker Carlson stated that big tech censorship was a form of election tampering and cited a well-documented claim that Google has suppressed stories about then-candidate Joe Biden from its search algorithm.

The Department of the Treasury has given U.S. banks permission to host stablecoin infrastructure and accept transactions
Stablecoins are cryptocurrency tied to an outside variable like the dollar to reduce instability
The change could mean fast online transactions as banks use tokens tied to the dollar
The Department of the Treasury has clarified its rules, permitting U.S. banks to participate in stablecoin networks and transactions. The move makes it possible for banks to use cryptocurrency tied to the dollar to make online and cross-border transactions extremely fast without the need for federal infrastructure.
Stablecoins are cryptocurrency that resist the technology’s characteristic price volatility by tying their value to an external variable, like the dollar or commodities. They use the same blockchain technology as other cryptocurrencies, each user hosting an index to create a peer-to-peer network to verify transactions and monitor holdings.
Thanks to recent action from the Treasury, the ranks of those peers may soon include America’s largest banks. A Monday release from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the people in charge of implementing U.S. monetary policy, clarified that banks are permitted to participate in stablecoin networks and complete stablecoin transactions.
“The primary role of banks is to act as financial intermediaries, facilitating the flow of money and credit among different parts of the economy,” the announcement read. “The evolving financial needs of the economy have led to a demand for banks to use [independent node verification networks] to carry out their financial functions.”
That role of an intermediary is what has so many people excited. The Federal Reserve has been slow to create the infrastructure needed for a true digital dollar, letting other countries take the first steps toward online transactions.
With this clarification, everyone participating in the U.S. economy may not need to wait for the Fed. With banks fully able to trade stablecoins tied to the U.S. dollar, they may be able to independently create the infrastructure needed to bring U.S. currency into the digital era.
Experts are assuaging concerns that the entry of these massive institutions into the cryptocurrency market could mean problems for normal individuals. David Grider, a strategist for Fundstrat Global Advisors, told Bloomberg Tuesday that he didn’t expect the change to have a significant impact on cryptocurrency prices.

Work has officially started to completely replace Offutt’s aging runway as Phase 0 of the $143.9 million project began recently.
Phase 0 consists of a variety of preparatory contractor work prior to the full airfield closure in March 2021 that will help them meet the 18-month replacement schedule.
Once all of the flying operations have transitioned to the Lincoln Airport in March, the airfield will completely shut down and Phase 1 will commence.
