In the novel and movie The Hunt for Red October, the Red October is a fictional Typhoon-class submarine with a caterpillar drive that allows it to move nearly silently, making it undetectable to passive sonar. Inspiration:
While fictional, the Red October story was partly inspired by the 1975 mutiny of the Soviet destroyer Storozhevoy, which aimed to overthrow the Soviet government. This event, along with other details, contributed to the realistic and plausible narrative of The Hunt for Red October.
Location:
The movie was filmed in various locations, including the area near Port Valdez in Alaska, the USS Houston, and near Point Loma in San Diego. The interior scenes were filmed on Hollywood soundstages, as filming inside real submarines was deemed too cramped.
