Narrative:

A Cessna 421C Golden Eagle, N421GP, was destroyed when it crashed into several residential houses near Troutdale Airport (TTD/KTTD), Fairview, Oregon. A huge post crash fire ensued.

After some initial radio transmission difficulties, the flight was cleared for takeoff from runway 25 and upon request by the pilot, a flight around the pattern was approved.

After takeoff the tower controller asked for the pilot's intentions as he was flying at 1700 feet, which was 'well above the VFR altitude restrictions for the Troutville area'.

The pilot subsequently radioed to the tower controller that he was experiencing 'handling problems'. The controller later cleared the aircraft to land on any runway.

Both occupants and a person on the ground perished.

Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell has declassified the list of former Obama administration officials who were allegedly involved in the “unmasking” of then-incoming national security adviser Michael Flynn.

ABC News first reported the news but initially said in the title that Grenell was in the process of trying to declassify the list of Obama officials.

A source with knowledge of the matter told The Daily Wire that the list has already been declassified and now it’s on Attorney General William Barr to release the list.

ABC News appeared to later update their report, which stated:

Grenell, who remains the U.S. ambassador to Germany along with being the acting DNI, visited the Justice Department last week and brought the list with him, according to the official.

His visit indicates his focus on an issue previously highlighted in 2017 by skeptics of the investigation into the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russia, specifically allegations that former officials improperly unveiled Flynn’s identity from intercepts of his call with former Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Grenell’s visit came the same week that Attorney General William Barr moved to dismiss the criminal case against Flynn following his guilty plea for lying to the FBI about his conversations with Kislyak.

Fox News reported in 2017 that the disclosing of Flynn’s identity could be “a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison” because “rules state that if an American with Constitutional protections is collaterally caught in such surveillance, his or her identity must be protected.”

In an interview last week, Barr said that the charges against Flynn were dropped because the FBI, which was under the leadership of then-Director James Comey, were not conducting a legitimate law enforcement investigation.

“A crime cannot be established here because there was not, in our view, a legitimate investigation going on,” Barr said. “They did not have a basis for a counterintelligence investigation against Flynn at that stage, based on a perfectly legitimate and appropriate call he made as a member of the transition.”

When asked if the Obama administration set a trap for Flynn, Barr responded, “Yes. Essentially. They had started a counterintelligence investigation during the summer, as you know, related to the campaign. But in December, the team, the Crossfire Hurricane team, was closing that and determined they had found nothing to justify continuing with that investigation against Flynn.”

“On the very day they prepared the final papers, the seventh floor, that is the director’s office and the deputy director’s office up there, sent down word they should keep that open,” Barr continued. “So that they could try to go and question Flynn about this call he had with the Russian ambassador.”

“This is one particular episode, but we view it as part of a number of related acts. And we’re looking at the whole pattern of conduct,” Barr added. “I think a very important evidence here was that this was not a bona fide counterintelligence investigation – was that they were closing the investigation in December. They started that process. And on January 4th, they were closing it.”

Former President Barack Obama responded to the decision by Barr by saying that he was “worried” that Flynn had been cleared from the illegitimate investigation because the “rule of law is at risk.”

The huge explosions that destroyed SpaceX’s Starship mega-rocket last year also blew one of the biggest ‘holes’ ever detected in the ionosphere, a layer of thin air in the upper atmosphere. The hole stretched for thousands of kilometres and persisted for nearly an hour, a study found1.

Study co-author Yury Yasyukevich, an atmospheric physicist at the Institute of Solar‐Terrestrial Physics in Irkutsk, Russia, says that the extent of the disturbance took his team by surprise: “It means we don’t understand processes which take place in the atmosphere.” He adds that such phenomena could have implications for future autonomous vehicles that might require precision satellite navigation. The results were published on 26 August in Geophysical Research Letters.

Record-setting rocket

On 18 November last year, SpaceX launched its Starship rocket — the biggest and most powerful rocket ever built — from a launchpad in Boca Chica, Texas. Starship’s first stage is designed to return safely to the surface for reuse but blew up shortly after separating from the upper stage, roughly 90 kilometres above the Gulf of Mexico. Minutes later, the self-destruction mechanism on the upper stage fired, triggering a second explosion at an altitude of around 150 kilometres.

Yasyukevich and his collaborators were curious to find out how such massive explosions could affect the ionosphere, a zone of the atmosphere extending from about 50 to 1,000 kilometres above sea level in which the Sun’s radiation can strip some air molecules of their electrons. The result is that a small percentage of the ionosphere’s mass consists of electrons and positively charged ions, while the rest of the air molecules remain neutral. The exact ratio of ionized to neutral molecules varies with factors such as altitude and latitude.

That ratio affects the speed at which the radio waves beamed down by global navigation satellites propagate in the ionosphere. Crucially, changes in the ratio have different effects on different radio frequencies. This enables researchers to measure the amount of ionization in real time by comparing the speeds of radio waves of two different frequencies, Yasyukevich explains.

Such data have been used for decades to reveal how events ranging from earthquakes to underground nuclear tests affect the ionosphere. These natural and human-caused disruptions can temporarily nullify the effects of solar radiation by causing electrons and ions to recombine into neutral molecules.

Neutralizing the air

The team examined publicly available data from more than 2,500 ground stations across North America and the Caribbean that receive satellite navigation signals. They found that the Starship explosions produced shock waves that travelled faster than the speed of sound, turning the ionosphere into a region of neutral atmosphere — a “hole” — for nearly an hour over a region stretching from Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula to the southeastern United States. Rocket exhaust can trigger chemical reactions that produce temporary holes in the ionosphere even in the absence of an explosion, but in this case the shockwaves themselves had by far the larger effect, Yasyukevich says.

“I was impressed by this case study,” says Kosuke Heki, a geophysicist at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan, who was an open reviewer for the paper. But he thinks that the chemical effects of the large conflagration were the dominant cause of the hole.

The hole was not quite as large as the one caused by the eruption of a Tongan volcano in early 2022, Heki says, but it beat the one produced by the historic meteor that fell near Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013 — the biggest in a century.

Ionospheric disturbances can affect not only satellite navigation but also communications and radio astronomy. As launch frequencies increase, these effects might become more of a problem.

Lockheed Martin has informed the Defense Department it plans to deliver 75 to 110 of the super-expensive and repeatedly delayed fifth generation combat aircraft to the US armed forces by December 31.

Lockheed Martin revealed the new policy to the public on Tuesday in a filing it made to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The troubled hardware and software upgrade package is known as TR-3.

Eighteen F-35 jets with the TR-3 upgrade package were delivered to the US armed forces by August 19.
