The completion of the building in 1979 marked an important milestone for the organisation. What we know as SingTel now was then a statutory board known as the Telecommunication Authority of Singapore or Telecoms for short, and Comcentre was a symbol of its success in providing basic telecommunication services to the public and its hope for the future new era in telecommunications.

As the complex accommodates administrative offices and telecommunication equipment, the building was designed to be functional and practical, featuring regular repetitive rectilinear geometrical elements and almost no decorative elements.

The idea that this building houses a telecommunications firm can be seen clearly in the main lobby and mezzanine floor, where the coffered ceiling represents the modern microwave communication system. The materials used, suspended glass walls, patterns of the tiles and even the structure of the staircase contribute to the aesthetics of the building.

The five-storey podium block, a flat and widely spread behemoth, stands in contrast with the adjoining 33-storey tower that has become a recognised part of the Orchard skyline. A plaza connects the buildings to one another.

A feature that reflects the distinctive function of this building, but is unusual for a skyscraper, are the microwave dishes on top of the tower block, which can transmit and receive radio frequency signals.

Being the first skyscraper in Singapore that had microwave dishes on its roof, the building is linked by its dishes to those across Singapore and the region, including those at the Sentosa earth satellite station, St John’s Island and even Gunung Pulai in West Malaysia.

Additionally, the complex was designed to conserve energy, so its main entrance was planned to face north, while the twin cores of the tower face east and west, providing shade and insulation to the building’s main body. The podium block was designed to be shielded from direct heat from the sun, due to the engineering operations equipment contained within.

In 2006, SingTel, which was corporatised and renamed in 1992, opened a $1 million Business Solutions Centre at Comcentre for business users to have a look at demonstrations of the latest communication solutions.

President Donald J. Trump is expected to stop over at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for an Air Force One refueling stop Tuesday morning en route to Washington D.C. following a 12-day trip to Asia.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued temporary flight restrictions from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday around the island of Oahu due to “VIP movement.” The entire island of Oahu is restricted, and encompasses many aircraft operations, including flight training, gliders, parachutes, hot air balloons and hang gliding. Commercial and cargo flights, as well as approved air ambulance flights, are not subject to the restrictions.

Trump’s schedule tomorrow includes participation in the 12th Annual Annual East Asia Summit Head of State and Government Luncheon, followed by the 12th East Asia Summit plenary session at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila, according to a White House press release. Later in the afternoon, President Trump is scheduled to depart Ninoy-Aquino International Airport in Manila for Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii en route to Washington D.C. He is expected to arrive at Hickam some time around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, and depart for Washington about 90 minutes later.

The president and first lady Melania Trump spent just over 18 hours on Oahu on Nov. 3 and 4 on their way to Asia. During that overnight stopover, the presidential motorcade closed H-1 and other roads several times as the Trumps traveled between Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and Waikiki, where the first couple stayed.

There are no public events scheduled for Tuesday’s stopover, and city officials have issued no warnings about road closures or other disruptions.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Exactly six years ago, Hawaii residents and visitors woke up to a terrifying emergency alert on their cell phones that sent a wave of panic across the state.

The message warned of a ballistic missile heading for Hawaii.

It read, “BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”

That was on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018.

It took nearly 40 minutes for officials to issue a correction. But after the shock wore off, many were left with frustration and anger.

Vern Miyagi, the head of Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, resigned in the aftermath. Toby Clairmont, the executive officer of HI-EMA, also resigned in the wake of the bogus missile alert.

The unidentified worker responsible for the false missile alert was fired and relocated to the mainland.

State and federal authorities later learned the employee in question did not know it was a drill - and intentionally issued a real alert, complete with the phrase “this is not a drill.”

A state investigation claimed the man was a problem employee, but his attorney said the man was made to be the scapegoat and that the false missile alert was the result of miscommunication.

Investigators called the incident the result of “a combination of human error and inadequate safeguards.”

They also faulted poor communication and a lack of supervision within Hawaii’s emergency management agency.

In the years since the false alert, there were investigations and a host of changes made in hopes of preventing a similar mistake.

A year after the alert, Tom Travis, the then-administrator of HI-EMA, told Hawaii News Now that “all of the ballistic missile alarms have been shelved.”

That includes emergency alerts via cell phone and outdoor emergency sirens, he said.

Another change: The FCC issued new rules for how emergency alerts are sent.

John Hemmings, senior director at think tank Pacific Forum, joined HNN’s Sunrise Weekends to talk about lessons from that day and an international security conference at Alohilani Resort on Jan. 16-17 focused on building resilience and cooperation to prepare for ongoing conflicts in the Indo-Pacific.

The Hawaii emergency management agency transmitted an unfounded alert warning of an imminent missile attack. The response showed Hawaii residents have no idea what to do in a nuclear attack.

As people of Hawaii catch their breath following the jarring missile alert mishap over the weekend, scrutiny has reached the White House and how it grappled with the mistaken alarm.

A message went out to the people of Hawaii on Saturday, telling them to seek shelter due to an incoming ballistic missile threat. State leaders and emergency officials said after that the alert was a false alarm, with the state’s governor saying it was because an employee “pushed the wrong button.”

President Donald Trump was quiet about the incident in its wake, and on Sunday night he said he was glad Hawaiian officials had taken responsibility for the massive failure of the statewide system.

12:35 p.m. ET – CNN cameras spot Trump between the14th and15th holes.

1:07(17) p.m. ET – Warnings of an incoming ballistic missile begin flashing on cellphones in Hawaii, leading to panic among some residents and visitors. The alert was triggered after an error at the emergency management administration.

1:10 p.m. ET – Hawaii State Adjutant Maj. Gen. Joe Logan confirms with US Pacific Command there is no missile headed for Hawaii, and the Honolulu Police Department is notified it was a false alarm.

About 1:10 p.m. ET – Trump has lunch inside the clubhouse of Trump International Golf Club. Members inside the building spot him.

Time unknown – Deputy National Security Adviser Ricky Waddell, who was the top national security official traveling with Trump in Florida, briefs Trump in person on the false alarm alerts.

7:20 p.m. ET – Trump makes his first comments about the false alarm alerts as he walks to dinner with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy at his West Palm golf club: “Well, that was a state thing. But we’re going to now get involved with them. I love that they took responsibility. They took total responsibility. But we’re going to get involved. Their attitude and their – what they want to do, I think it’s terrific. They took responsibility. They made a mistake.”

Asked whether he would make sure it won’t happen again, Trump said: “Well, we hope it won’t happen again. But part of it is that people are on edge, but maybe, eventually, we’ll solve the problem so they won’t have to be so on edge.”

A volcano responsible for one of the most violent eruptions in history is showing signs of life.

Scientists know little aboutMount Paektubecause most of the mountain lies in North Korea, one of the world's most secretive countries.

But for the first time, Western scientists have been allowed to study this sleeping giant, given extraordinary access to determine if or when it could wake up, reports CBS News correspondent Seth Doane.

"It was quite a special experience the first time," said British vulcanologist James Hammond. "Very much a voyage into the unknown."

For Hammond and Clive Oppenheimer, a professor of vulcanology at Cambridge University, traveling to Mount Paektu was the opportunity of a lifetime.

"This is such a big volcano that we know very little about," Hammond said.

In an unprecedented move, the two were seemingly chosen at random and invited by the reclusive government in Pyongyang, through a series of intermediaries, to work with local scientists after small earthquakes beneath the volcano stirred fears it could erupt.

More than 1,000 years ago Mount Paektu blew its top, sending tons of rock and magma spewing into the air and blanketing the much of the region in a thick layer of ash.

"It's hard really to imagine the scale," Oppenheimer said, "but you're talking about something like 1,000,000 nuclear weapons all going off at the same time in terms of the energy involved."

The eruption changed the landscape dramatically, leaving behind a three-mile crater, today known as Heaven Lake. It's that landscape the scientists are studying.

"When you try and reconstruct what a past eruption was like, it's like forensic science," Oppenheimer said. "There's a lot of information that you can glean just from the nature of the rocks."

The project has not been easy. Sanctions imposed on North Korea have made it difficult to bring in advanced technology, and the scientists are constantly under the watchful eye of the government.

Still, they've made three trips so far, and their glimpse behind the curtain has been eye-opening.

"We took part in their national celebrations," Hammond said, "and went to their mass gymnastics that they have. We were made to feel very welcome by the Koreans."

Research on Paektu has been a rare opportunity for the West to engage North Korea. Oppenheimer and Hammond hope that science can help bridge a divide where diplomacy has thus far faltered.

"What we're doing is rather unprecedented," Hammond said. "I think that's an important and valuable way to move forward and try to improve relations."

Oppenheimer and Hammond also hope to have the study's findings published in international scientific journals, a milestone that would be a first for North Korean scientists.

But they may have to wait; the pair doesn't expect the project to end for another two or three years.

SEOUL, South Korea – South Korea said it detected an earthquake Friday near North Korea's main nuclear test site, the fourth since the country's sixth and most powerful nuclear test explosion last month. Some experts suggested the area is now too unstable to conduct more bomb tests.

The 2.7-magnitude quake occurred about 34 miles northwest of Kilju, where the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site is located in northeastern North Korea, according to officials at South Korea's Korea Meteorological Administration. They said it wasn't man-made and didn't appear to cause any damage in the area.

The officials, who requested anonymity citing department rules, said they believe the four quakes probably happened because the underground nuclear test on Sept. 3 weakened or affected the tectonic plate structures in the area. The region isn't one where earthquakes naturally occur and no quakes were detected after the five smaller nuclear tests North Korea has conducted since 2006.

As CBS News' David Martin reported, the nuclear test produced an explosion almost 10 times larger than the blast from the bomb dropped over Hiroshima in 1945. The initial U.S. intelligence assessment of the test indicated the underground explosion measured 140 kilotons. The Hiroshima explosion yielded a blast of 15 kilotons.

The officials declined to say how the recent quakes might have affected the area and the test site, where all of North Korea's nuclear bomb tests have taken place. But some civilian experts said North Korea may stop using the site.

North Korea, which is accelerating its efforts to develop more powerful nuclear weapons and missiles, is unlikely to waste its limited nuclear materials by conducting tests that are weaker than its sixth. But a more powerful underground detonation at the current site could be "potentially suicidal," not only because of the weakened ground, but also because of the threat of a volcanic eruption at Mount Paektu, a revered North Korean mountain only about 60 miles away, according to Kune Yull Suh, a professor of nuclear engineering at Seoul National University.

Du Hyeogn Cha, a visiting scholar at Seoul's Asan Institute for Policy Studies, previously expressed similar worries, saying he wondered whether North Korea would be able to carry out another nuclear test in the area. Other experts said the quakes might have been caused by landslides or the collapsing of test structures such as tunnels.

North Korea's state media haven't reported any of the four quakes detected by South Korea and other countries.

The North has vowed to bolster its nuclear and missile programs despite increasing U.S.-led pressure on the country. Worries about a potential military clash between the U.S. and North Korea have also intensified in South Korea and elsewhere, with President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un exchanging crude personal insults and warlike rhetoric.

At the height of the standoff between the countries last month, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told reporters the country could conduct a hydrogen bomb test over the Pacific Ocean. Suh said Ri's comments might indicate the North is unable to carry out new explosions at its test site.

"It's likely that North Korea will conduct its next nuclear test in the stratosphere, or about 100 to 300 kilometers (60 to 185 miles) from the ground, where it will be able to conduct more powerful detonations," Suh said.

BEIJING – Research by Chinese geologists suggests that the mountain above North Korea's main nuclear test site has likely collapsed. That collapse has likely rendered the site unsafe for further testing and will require that it be monitored for any leaking radiation.

The findings by the scientists at the University of Science and Technology of China may shed new light on North Korean President Kim Jong Un's announcement that his country was ceasing its testing program ahead of planned summit meetings with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Donald Trump.

The results also support some of the findings of an earlier study by another group of Chinese researchers that was published last month by the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Trump says N. Korea agreed to denuclearize, but that's not the case

Nuclear explosions release enormous amounts of heat and energy, and the North's largest test in September was believed early on to have rendered the Punggye-ri site in northeastern North Korea unstable.

Chinese authorities have said they've detected no radiation risk from samples collected along the border. Calls to those departments were not immediately answered on Thursday.

The data in the latest Chinese study was collected following the most powerful of North Korea's six nuclear device tests on Sept. 3, which is believed to have triggered four earthquakes over the following weeks. The yield of the bomb was estimated at more than 100 kilotons of TNT, at least 10 times stronger than anything the North had tested previously. (The bomb the United States dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 had a yield of about 15 kilotons.)

The University of Science and Technology of China paper, authored by Tian Dongdong, Yao Jiawen and Wen Lianxing, said the first of those earthquakes, which occurred 8 ½ minutes after the explosion, was "an onsite collapse toward the nuclear test center," while those that followed were an "earthquake swarm" in similar locations.

"In view of the research finding that the North Korea nuclear test site at Mantapsan has collapsed, it is necessary to continue to monitor any leakage of radioactive materials that may have been caused by the collapse," the authors said in a summary dated Monday and viewed Wednesday on the university's website.

The study is peer-reviewed and has been accepted for publication by the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

The Chinese study makes sense and is based on well understood research, said Rowena Lohman, a seismologist at Cornell University who wasn't part of the work. She said she believes there's an international effort that monitors these tests for radiation.

A study published last month by the journal, authored by a team led by Liu Junqing at the earthquake bureau in Jilin province along the border with North Korea, found similar results of the Sept. 3 explosion. It described the aftershock that followed seconds later as most likely a "rapid destruction of an explosion-generated cracked rock chimney due to cavity collapse."

North Korea's nuclear tests are of special concern to Beijing, since the test site near the town of Kilju is less than 60 miles from the border with China.

North Korean nuclear tests have caused seismic events in Chinese border towns and cities, forcing evacuations of schools and offices, sparking fears of wind-born radiation and leading to a backlash among some Chinese against their country's unpredictable traditional ally.

Ties between the sides have been deteriorating for years, although Kim made a long-anticipated visit to Beijing last month after China's implementation of United Nations economic sanctions reduced trade between them by as much as 90 percent.

The quakes that followed the September test were not man-made and didn't appear to cause any damage in the area. The region isn't one where earthquakes naturally occur and no quakes were detected after the five smaller nuclear tests North Korea has conducted since 2006.

Kune Yull Suh, a professor of nuclear engineering at Seoul National University, warned last year that further tests could threaten to cause a volcanic eruption at Mount Paektu, which is about 60 miles away.

On Saturday, North Korea announced it will close its nuclear testing facility and suspend nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile tests - a move welcomed by Trump as "big progress" - and which comes ahead of the planned summit between him and Kim.

However, the North stopped short of suggesting it will give up its nuclear weapons or scale back its production of missiles and their related components.

Strzok-Page text messages recovered for key dates

The political rhetoric over the FISA abuse memo took a new turn with the ranking Democrat drafting his own version; Catherine Herridge goes in-depth for 'Special Report.'

Newly uncovered text messages between FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page suggest a possible coordination between high-ranking officials at the Obama White House, CIA, FBI, Justice Department and former Senate Democratic leadership in the early stages of the investigation into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, according to GOP congressional investigators on Wednesday.

The investigators say the information provided to Fox News “strongly” suggests coordination between former President Barack Obama’s Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, then-Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, and CIA Director John Brennan — which they say would “contradict” the Obama administration’s public stance about its hand in the process.

Page texted Strzok on Aug. 2, 2016, saying: “Make sure you can lawfully protect what you sign. Just thinking about congress, foia, etc. You probably know better than me.”

A text message from Strzok to Page on Aug. 3 described former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe as being concerned with “information control” related to the initial investigation into the Trump campaign. According to a report from the New York Times, Brennan was sent to Capitol Hill around the same time to brief members of Congress on the possibility of election interference.

Days later, on Aug. 8, 2016, Strzok texted Page: “Internal joint cyber cd intel piece for D, scenesetter for McDonough brief, Trainor [head of FBI cyber division] directed all cyber info be pulled. I’d let Bill and Jim hammer it out first, though it would be best for D to have it before the Wed WH session.”

In the texts, “D” referred to FBI Director James Comey, and and “McDonough” referred to Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, the GOP investigators said.

“We are not making conclusions. What we are saying is that the timeline is concerning enough to warrant the appointment of an independent investigator to look at whether or not the Obama White House was involved [in the Trump-Russia investigation],” a GOP congressional source told Fox News.

An FBI spokesman did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment.

The congressional investigators pointed out to Fox News that the CIA and FBI are supposed to be “independent agencies,” and noted that “coordination between political actors at the White House and investigators would be inappropriate,” raising questions about the level of involvement of Obama White House officials.

But weeks later, on August 25, 2016, Brennan went to Capitol Hill to brief Harry Reid — and it was unclear whether FBI officials attended the briefing, a congressional source told Fox News.

Two days after the briefing, Reid penned a letter to Comey requesting an investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

“The evidence of a direct connection between the Russian government and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign continues to mount and has led Michael Morrell, the former Acting Central Intelligence Director, to call Trump an ‘unwitting agent’ of Russia and the Kremlin,” Reid, a Nevada Democrat, wrote. “The prospect of a hostile government actively seeking to undermine our free and fair elections represents one of the gravest threats to our democracy since the Cold War and it is critical for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to use every resource available to investigate this matter thoroughly and in a timely fashion.”

Reid cited reports in his letter, noting “methods” Russia was using to influence the Trump campaign and “manipulate it as a vehicle for advancing the interests of Russian President Vladimir Putin.”

Reid added that “recent staff changes within the Trump campaign have made clear that the Trump campaign has employed a number of individuals with significant and disturbing ties to Russia and the Kremlin,” urging Comey to make the investigation “public.”

The following day, Aug. 30, 2016, Strzok texted Page: “Here we go,” sending a link to the Times report titled, “Harry Reid Cites Evidence of Russian Tampering in U.S. Vote and seeks FBI inquiry.”

Page replied: “D [Comey] said at am brief that Reid called him and told him he would be sending a letter.”

Congressional investigators suggested that the Reid letter possibly provided “cover” for the fact that the FBI and Justice Department had already begun investigating the Trump campaign in mid-July on what they called “questionable ethical and legal grounds.”

“The ‘here we go’ text between Strzok and Page indicates the FBI/ DOJ knew the letter from Reid was coming,” a congressional source told Fox News. “This created the inference they knew it would create public calls for an investigation into Russian interference — covering them.”

The source told Fox News on Wednesday that investigators were neither “passing judgement” nor “claiming a smoking gun,” but suggested that the timeline was “incredibly concerning.”

“At some point, the amount of concerning information becomes enough for a special counsel to look into it.”
