>tfw your lil sis, age 12, draws like a complete professional.
>tfw you, age 23, can't draw stickmen for shit
People say that if you practice, you will get good enough. Yet my lil sis is just a kid and she draws things that beffudle me to this day.
It makes it real hard to even want to try. I am still convinced that everyone who gits gud at art had some talent to start up. Or am I wrong?

Aptitudes exist. Human equality doesn't. That said, anything you do a lot, you can improve at. You just have to be smart and most importantly PROLIFIC about it.

I tried but… The shit I draw is literally cringe.
My lil sis (so embarassing having to take tips from a child) says I should "develop my own drawing style first, to see what works for me".

Take a small section of it and put a color filter over it if you're worried about it coming back to you. For the record there's probably less than 5 people that browse this board and I doubt they give a frick. I understand your concern tho.

Have her draw something on paper and post a scan yourself so there is no way to reverse image search to whatever normalfag social media your sister uses.

This is the most serious I've taken drawing/art since I was a kid. I've never really had any formal training, although I have enjoyed doodling and goofing around with pencil and paper since I was little.
I made attached just for shits and giggles. I think I've improved in 6 months. Maybe I'll never be good, but I'm going to keep drawing.

Natural talents do exist hence the phrase "she's a natural!"
But "practice makes perfect" is a popular phrase as well and it's also true. You literally have to practice every day though. EVERY DAY. I've been practicing drawing every day for a mere three months now and I'm seeing definite improvement.

Pretty much this.
Though one thing that I think is often overlooked is how hard it is to see how much you've improved, over longer periods of time.
Improvement is gradual, and the increments are small, save for those times when you discover something huge and suddenly things work a million times better.

Just because your sister are talented doesn't mean she don't need to learn anything about drawing. She still need to study on it in order to draw well. The only difference is, talented people studied rather differently than the non talented one. But the amount of effort of studying it are pretty much the same though.

Here's the reason why younger artists tend to be better. Any body can draw, talented people just learn faster.
However, the main difference is she didn't give a shit what her art looked like, so she kept drawing, and kept drawing and kept drawing. Being that young they don't have the self awareness or age regret of "not being talented enough" They just do what they enjoy.
You on the other hand don't draw because you enjoy it, you draw because you want to become good. You can't start out good no matter what, your sister started out drawing like shit, but she's young enough not to care.
Because you draw like shit you stop drawing, or cheat and learn nothing because you want it to look good.
And that is why, suck it up and suck till you feel like you suck no more. >which is never btw. Every artist ever says they always have more to learn.

I remember reading an article that dealt with how almost all children draw, but at a certain age start realizing that their drawings suck. Some keep going and improve over time, while the others stop drawing entirely and naturally have a hard time picking it back up as they're older.
Go figure which one you are and which one your sister is. I don't believe the talent meme , I think it mostly boils down to actual time spent practicing.

That's exactly it. Expecting too much out of yourself is retarded and will stunt your growth. I've been drawing for like 4-5 years now but I'm probably on 1 or 2 years of real progress all because I'm a crybaby mangina that can't handle the fact I'm not Rembrandt or Doxy or whatever yet and frequently take 6 month drawing vacations to feel sorry for myself.

This is how I used to be with many things, start practicing something like drawing, playing the guitar, or studying a language. I would pour a massive amount of effort into it for about a week, then get disappointed when after spending around 8 hours a day for 7 days I hadn't improved on it, then would take a long "rest" period that would stretch into months.
I found that what works for me is taking it slow, sometimes very slow and simple, for the first 2 to 4 weeks, take a good assessment of your competence, then develop a plan of attack. During that slow period, you should try and see in which areas are you severely lacking in and try to work on those first.
You also need to work on conquering those little voices that tell you "you aren't and never will be good enough, so why try" or "I really suck and this takes too much time and effort to get better, so why bother starting". Yes, maybe right now you stink, but if you just keep practicing, you will get better, maybe it won't be overnight or within a month, but eventually you will get better.

Look dude, keep at it. I fucking hate how shit my drawings are, but I hate not being good even worse, and my first drawing is shittier than my twentieth. See >>5438 and >>5457. Analyze what was making your art weak, and then carve that weakness from your habits.

For style? My advice as a professional idiot is look at whatever stuff whose style you like the most, and would like to use as influence on your own. When they have their own style, they have to follow some set of rules or another to reach it. I think(?) that's what the cartoonist dudes for Venture Bros did, and the same thing for SpongeBob, only with simpler construction. And don't just do one style! Find the rules governing your other favorite influences, and copy them down on paper, and try to draw specific examples while mixing a few rules together. And practice practice practice. Making that practice fun can also help out a little. Don't be afraid to push yourself while practicing, because learning the big weaknesses you have with new tools and techniques and then eliminating them is better done sooner than later.
