And then they wonder why most students never read a single book the rest of their entire lives after getting out of school.

Most HS English teachers are mentally retarded slags cashing in on the academic equivalent of unskilled union jobs.

Aside from conditioning students to be tame and stupid, I'm pretty sure English classes are conscientiously designed to instill a hatred of classic literature in students. Nowadays loving of garbage like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games seems to be the preferred route. All literature is not created equal. I can't fathom why any intelligent, literate person would want to be in a high school classroom. Harold Bloom talks about this on an interview with Charlie Rose.

Here's an actual best selling author pissing all over this kind of shit. It's a pretty good read.

That was an interesting read. He made a few interesting points (not everyone likes to read the same shit, school destroys a child's interest in reading, a lot of people read classics to maintain an image). I respect his opinion.

That's not really the point he was trying to make anon. He's saying that the books schools choose are shit lib attention whoring fee fee shit, that THAT is the big reason it destroys an interest in reading, but so does spending a bunch of time Freud psycho-analyzing the symbolism of the shit and using a modern fucking social justice lense (clear fucking bias through and through every time) to analyze it – all because they lack actual critical thinking skills (most teachers). Lib attention whores also status-signal by claiming to read classics, which is retarded.

I forgot to say that they should add "personal reading" of a book of one's choice as part of their grade, with a requirement of 1 book a month give or take, given the page count and difficulty of the book. 2 or 3 books a year is also fucking retarded. 12 books in-class a year makes more sense, for a total of 24 books read a year (on average).

I think the Western Canon is a thing of great value.
Also think teenagers have no context or life experience to understand WHY that is and so forcing them to read 'dry' things does, in fact, turn them off. Most kids are at least somewhat rebellious and do the opposite of whatever you tell them. That modern' books….providing a nationalist, Western-centric POV are considered so "outside the window of good taste"is the great travesty here. They took over publishing houses, record companies, etc..but first they grabbed the University humanities departments by force (during the 60's). That was the beginning of their power. And that's where we have to start, somehow…

Also, just the difference between reading for pleasure and reading to gain something. Even if what is gained is the willpower and patience to slow your mind down enough to let let something like Glass Bead Game or Magic Mountain pass through it. Internet addiciton makes that much harder for kids today…

He writes fantasy which is considered low brow literature marketed specifically for kids, so of course he’s right, kids are going to prefer his work over ‘classics’
Like certain genres of music require you live a little before you can appreciate it, so does certain works of literature

Oh I’m happy someone said it. My literature teacher was annoying and after the school I didn’t take a book in my hands for 5 years

I agree with you guys. My teacher was mentally ill and I even don't shame her now, I'm confident in it. I hated to visit her lessons, always skipped them, and did my homework thanks to materials on this page https://writingbros.com/essay-examples/fahrenheit-451/ , because even small contact with literature made me mad and anxious. Then I joined the university and took a book in my hands (if we talk about non-educational related books) only after a few years. It unfortunates me a lot…
