Every time the government wants to pass something horrible that past two decades, it's the same four excuses:

I know there's a lot of people who come onto this board and meme "BUt whAt IF thE chILd COnsENts," but is the libertarian movement going to get crushed because you can basically justify anything an authoritarian does by remotely connecting it to "Cracking down on CP" (or terrorism or human trafficking or money laundering)? Increase TSA searches because that cracks down on CP. Take away VPNs because those are used for CP. Take away Bitcoin because money laundering and only people selling CP would launder money. Take away everyone's gun because some hick in Virginia liked his gun and his cousin's mother-in-law turned out to have a ton of CP.
There's no talk about what would ACTUALLY stop this sort of stuff. It's always this fucking gut reaction. I'm getting kind of depressed by it.

It's a pretty terrible test that makes no actual attempt to determine whether the subject is actually "ready" to have sex (whatever that means) or not. Why are those things necessarily bad? Why is it a bad thing for a woman to have sex with a baby? What if a man happens to be poorly endowed and a certain 11 year old girl happens to be sufficiently developed to accommodate him? What doom do you foretell will befall them if they have sex? Presumably, if two people (of any age) were having sex and one of them found it to be particularly uncomfortable or even painful, that person would say something to indicate that, like "stop, that hurts." At that point, if the other partner stops, it's unlikely that there will be any lasting damage. If the other partner doesn't stop, then it becomes rape, which is already illegal regardless of age.
If you really think that no child would ever knowingly agree to have sex with an adult, why have an age of consent at all? Why not rely solely on rape laws? Or do you think it should legal to rape adult women?

Clancy is a fucking retard who's careful to remind readers five times every page that even though there's little to no evidence that sex in itself is harmful to children, it's still immoral and potentially quite harmful through secondary mechanisms. Her argument is that we should destigmatize the "victims" of pedophilia, but not pedophiles themselves. This can only be interpreted as exactly the kind of slippery slope argument that pedo-haters fear even more than outright support of pedophilia, since the only logical conclusion is that after "victims" have been destigmatized and the mechanism of harm removed, there's no longer any reason to persecute pedophiles.
The information in the book is quite good though, if you ignore all of the insufferable moralizing. All that aside, I'm always amused by how work by card-carrying pedo haters like Susan Clancy and Lenore Skenazy is held up as a silver bullet capable of disproving any argument against adult-child sexual relations. At least it's better than pedos holding up Cantor's p-hacked quackery as some sort of supporting argument.

Except that's exactly what happened to her, because everyone interpreted her book as being the thin of the wedge toward normalizing pedophilia (which is exactly what it is). She's published literally nothing in the ten years since The Trauma Myth. No books, no journal articles, not even a blog that a brief google search turns up.
…And then, as soon as I typed this post I realized that I was originally asked about Harmful to Minors and not The Trauma Myth. God damn, I feel like a dumbass. Anyway, I'm much more sympathetic to Levine than I am toward Clancy. She actually had the balls to come out and say that kids having sex (even with adults) isn't necessarily a bad thing, and we should be more concerned with where and how it happens than with trying to prevent it entirely. And honestly, it worked out a lot better for her. I'm not really sure how exactly, especially considering that her book was published in the wake of the Rind fiasco, but I'm guessing that a lot of it had to do with the fact that she's a journalist and not a scientist. Controversial science gets you defunded, but controversial reporting gets you readership.
