The Catholic Church has a few problems, but that is actually not one of them. At least, outside of America. If you look at the pro-gay Bishops, most of them are in America. As for Francis himself, he is badly misrepresented in the media. They desperately try to paint him to be pro-gay, when all his comments, if you look further into the matters, are either undocumented, or him reaffirming that homosexuality is a grievous sin while also saying that we should love homosexuals despite their sin. So, perhaps more liberal than other Popes, but far from progressive. In any case, not enough to lose faith over.
One thing you have to understand is that the Catholic Church in America is a big embarassment, and has been for a hundred years or so. There is only one Saint from America who was actually born there, and that was a native American woman. American Catholics are not only rather progressive, they are also very legalistic, and without much warmth or heart, there are several historical visitors who have attested to that. I can tell you that here in Germany, my church is far from that progressive, and we are a big congregation. We still hear about martyrdom, and we got one priest who makes excellent exegeses.
The two valid denominations are Catholic, and Orthodox, as both have apostolic succession. Lutherans, whether they are traditional or not, do not have it, and in fact, their concept of the Church as something invisible does away with over a millenium of tradition. If you read the Bible, you will find a conception of the Church closer to what is now the Orthodox and Catholic Church, now one in which everyone is technically a priest but some are democratically elected to act as priests, and so on.
As for whether Catholicism or Orthodoxy, I suggest reading here about some of the prominent issues:

Those include the filioque, the theology surrounding Mary, and, of course, papal supremacy. I think the site gives good arguments, better ones than most Orthodox Christians, but of course, an Orthodox Christian will disagree.
