I've had similar issues with my work computer. If it's w7 afaik the only solution would be to break up or re-sort the folder into smaller sub folders mah dude. What happens with mine is it's sort of date modified or whatever but it was previously sorted by type, and it loads as sorted by type but at some point as I scroll it snaps to organized by date modified which can be confusing if I don't remember that it's going to switch if I don't find what i'm looking for quick enough pic related.
I'm assumin you have the thumbnails set to smallest size as well.

i probably have the biggest kpics collection on kpg and even with highly organized folders it takes forever to load thumbnails sometimes
most of my pics are on 5400rpm drives but it takes a long time and still doesn't load thumbs on my ssd too
my ioi folder is the biggest and it takes so long to load i usually just give up. it's especially annoying when you're trying to find a specific pic and have to open each pic one at a time until you find it
i use icaros and media preview to generate webm/jpg thumbnails and jpegview is my default imageviewer, i think that plus my 5400rpm drives plus shitty windows is why thumbs take forever. it doesn't matter how many times i rebuild my thumbnail cache it always fucks up
i've noticed it also gets a lot worse after my computer goes to sleep and then wakes up too. this is actually my biggest frustration when posting kqts

I can't remember for sure but when I ran Windows on my personal computer I used honeyview for awhile which may have took over the thumbnail loading in the file system and made it faster but I'm not 100% sure on that. Either way it's more convenient then the default image viewer so I'll give dat shit a shout out.

it's outdated as fuck but i guess it works. it's still just a wrapper for ffmpeg though so now i'm even more curious as to why webm4retards is messing up audio
pretty sure it's these default arguments:
-c:v libvpx -pix_fmt yuv420p
these decide the video codec (libvpx) and pixel format (yux420p) of your video, and they're both like the worst possible options you could use lol
i don't know much about why the video options would mess up the audio but i think it has something to do with ffmpeg muxing them together

btw i noticed if thumbs get stuck/stop loading it helps if you
1. go to folder options (windows key + r "control.exe folders") > view
2. check "always show icons, never thumbnails"
3. uncheck "display file icon on thumbnails"
3. click apply
4. then revert (only check display file icon on thumbnails)
your thumbs will reload. this fixes bugged thumbs on my ssd but you still have to wait for a hdd to spin up for those thumbnails. takes forever for me because my 4tb drives are pretty much full
