I'm pretty sure the majority of us on here know about Welcome to the NHK. as it's probably the most popular hikki anime but which hikikomori anime character do you relate to the most /hikki/??.

>as for Tomoko i can relate to her on the basic of having really bad social anxiety and loneliness and the feeling of wanting to be accepted by your peers when you were younger but at the same time hating them for not socially accepting you.

I just started watching Watamote and really feel the same. Also the ways she tries to be accepted, trying to analyze normies and media, then trying to mimic that behavior. I used to do that kind of thing. The failures and embarrassments she endures hit so close to home it hurts.

>that scene when she tries to walk past her classmates by mimicking them

>gets called ugly in front of her brother

everything in this show is like a parody of my life, i can't believe i avoiding watching this

I started watching Watamote recently as well, but I find it more enjoyable than painful. Even though Tomoko is a lot like me, I more relate to the times when she says 'to hell with them' than the times she tries to be like them. She does remind me a lot of how I was back in high school, and I still share many similarities with her now. But I don't (especially now) exhaust myself trying to fit in with people that I don't like and don't respect. Not that I think I'm above them, I just don't have anything in common with the average person, nor would I want to.

How about a third? I stopped watching a lot of anime a few years after I graduated in 2006. I gradually strayed away from such interest. I would watch a couple here and there over the years but that's it. I don't watch as much as the others do like someone who watches Kdrama religiously.

There are a few exceptions that I do need to watch like FLCL, since they're going to have 2 seasons. Sometimes Gundam. Depending on the story.

As for Welcome to the NHK, I watched that in 2011, if I remember correctly. The problem is that I can't relate a whole much but only certain aspects of it. Still, to me an anime is an anime and its depiction is loosely based to the real thing. People shouldn't really relate to an anime but rather should relate the root of it, the actual concept.

The novel is a lot more realistic and relatable than the anime.

I really liked nhk, because all characters incarnate parts of me, so accurately it is frightening. The agoraphobia, the obsession with escapism, the fear, terror, of being rejected and abandoned, pill abuse… even some small, insignificant details they did surprised me by how familiar they were

But if I had to choose one, of course it'd be yamazaki. Sure there's a lot (too much) Satou in me, but honestly I'm just yamazaki with some severe social anxiety

>It's a shame tomoko's anime/manga is only good for the first few chapters

The manga got really shitty and the anime was good but had a crappy ending Tomoko had no character development what so ever and instead gave up on trying to become popular and ran back home and ended up a full on hikikomori in the end.

>I really liked nhk, because all characters incarnate parts of me, so accurately it is frightening. The agoraphobia, the obsession with escapism, the fear, terror, of being rejected and abandoned, pill abuse… even some small, insignificant details they did surprised me by how familiar they were

The anime was good but i feel the message it gives in the final episode is that your problems will be solved simply just by going out and working which we all know isn't true and in the end everyone Satou knows is happy and is having a successful life while he is stuck in a dead end job and unsure if he will ever succeed there is a lot of Satou in me the conspiracy theories his social anxiety paranoia obsession with escapism, the feeling of loneliness agoraphobia and the fact that he is a hikkineet these are all things of Satou i can relate to as for yamazaki i can relate to him on being really into anime and Otaku culture being pressured by your parents to do things you don't want to do. And his disinterest in women in the early episodes.

It didn't quite appear that way to me. For one thing, the anime is a comedy, and most comedies don't have heavy character development anyway. Aside from that, I doubt Tomoko went full hikki, she still had Yuu-chan as a friend, also that student council girl showed an interest in her. If the show had continued, it's possible she would have slowly gained friends and gone out more. However, since most of Tomoko's comedic charm in the show came from her social inadequacies, the show would have lost the elements that made it worth watching, and it would have become as bad as the manga. That's just my take on it.

That's true i guess this also applies to what i was saying about NHK. too as it did have some character development but not a lot in the end and that is why i like the novel a little bit better than the anime because it's a lot more realistic in terms of being relatable but the anime does still hold a special place in my heart.

Actually i agree if it did continue i would hate to see it end up like the manga too By the way anon have you seen Rozen Maiden or Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei those are both other great hikki animes.

Yeah, Watamote is similar in that there is only a little bit of development. At the end of the anime for instance, when Tomoko invites Yuu-chan to her school's cultural fair and she ends up having fun. It feels like the first time in the anime where she saw Yuu-chan as an actual friend, rather than just a tool for social leverage.

In one of the early episodes i remember she called Yuu-chan a slut.

Rozen Maiden is really good and has some really funny moments i'm sure you have seen the character Suiseiseki around on the internet in the past as Rozen Maiden is where the Desu meme actually came from if you remember that from old school 4chan also a warning ahead of time there is no dub of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei so you will have to watch it with subtitles Kiri Komori is the hikki character in the anime and the character in the op pic.

I started watching NHK yesterday and it's pretty good but I don't like how a Misaki is there out of nowhere to rescue Satou, that's not what happens in actuality, people mostly do not care about us or know we even exist, if you want to get out of it you have to do it yourself, no one will give you a hand. It's a fun fantasy I guess. Rest of the show I like.

finished nhk last night, I liked the show overall but the ending I did not find great, I liked that in the end sato cured sato and I'm happy he got the girl in the end but it also makes me realize that this is a fantasy, truth is even if we do find jobs at some point we will still be alone… just spending 8 hours per day working in most likely an unenjoyable job, then come home and feel the same loneliness minus the feeling of shame from leeching off people, there really is no solution

Surprised nobody posted it yet.

One of the best animes I ever watched in my entire life. The only reason the protagonist is not an hikki is that he can't afford it (he ends up being homeless in fact)

>The year is 1995. After graduating from high school, the young Kaiji Itou has moved to Tokyo in hopes of finding a steady job. Two years later, he's still unemployed and in a state of depression. Kaiji wastes what little money he has on cheap gambles, alcohol and cigarettes on a daily basis. To feel better about himself, he sabotages expensive cars and collects their emblems. One of these cars belongs to Yuuji Endou, a yakuza with ties to the financial empire Teiai Corporation

>It turns out that Endou has been searching for Kaiji for a while, ever since he co-signed a contract for his friend Furuhata, which left him with a large debt. Endou also wants Kaiji to compensate for the car's damages. Kaiji is left with a choice; he must either spend 10 years working off the debt in a labour camp, or board a gambling cruise called "Espoir" (French for "hope") where he will be able to pay off the debt in one night… If he wins.

The author, Noboyuki Fukumot unlike the author of welcome to the nhk apparently managed to fix his life. I can suggest other works by him.

One interesting thing is that there are no female characters in almost every work he has done.

The first is Akagi. The less hikki of the ones I'm suggesting. It's a cult from old cuckchan /a/, in 2007. It's about a weird mysterious kid in post WW2 japan who terrorizes yakuza. It's about fear, fear of dying in particular.

The second one is a manga and it's the most hikki one.

The name's Strongest Man Kurosawa.

Kurosawa is a 40 something guy without a family, without a single friend, virgin, ugly, not even very smart and without a single talent.

He's not an hikkikomori because otherwise he would starve to death, instead he works in a costruction company doing manual labour.

The series is about him and his daily struggles, for example he fails to get friends at work, he almost get arrested when he tries to do a good action only because it's ugly etc.

One day he gets beaten up almost to death by highschoolers, and that's when his legend begins, because he decides to get revenge and by taking it he will manage to actually get friends, albei weird ones.

Again can't spoil anything, but this has a very inspiring message, and literally 0 normalfag bullshit like "just b yourself" or "just try harder".

I reccomend starting with Kaiji since it's the most accessible of the 3, then Kurosawa and then Akagi

I read somewhere that Tatsuhiko Takimoto recently got out of the hikki lifestyle after 16 years and has now found a way towards a better lifestyle, and is incredibly active online and in the community he lives in. He's also learned a good amount of English over the years from his time in isolation and also dabbles in music production a bit now.
