Things you've learned and put into practice Hikki 09/04/17 (Mon) 13:21:56 f1fd30 No. 164 [Last50 Posts]
It's often that hikki and NEET talk about learning things and becoming smarter while being shut in. I fell for this mindset too but in hindsight it was shallow and pseudo-intellectual garbage. I went through a science/STEM atheism neckbeard phase.
I did the programming thing for years but didn't advance far enough to be able to do real world things with it. Now I have lost the drive to learn more. The idea that all technology is fun no longer appeals to me because it's impossible to know everything. Only a surface level knowledge of many things is not useful. I lack the focus and intelligence to get deep into a topic like become proficient at solving those hard programming tests on leetcode or hackerrank.
I learned a bit of some obscure language (but now forgotten it). I was able to watch Youtube videos at slow speed and understand basic things. It was never put into practice because people who use that language are so rare. It's also useless to me anyways on account of the whole shut in thing. I won't be using it in real life ever.
So ultimately what did I spend time on these things for. I have lost faith in the self learning thing.
What things have you learned that you have been able to put into practice?

English, over the days of my isolation I put much effort into learning this language since it's the most used language on internet you know, so I just started with take some courses, read books and lurk in the boards here as well, surely I'm not professional but at least now I can understand most of the threads and posts without me have to translate 40% of the words, Though I forgot much of what I learned over months, much of my skills gone away and I wonder whether that's due to me stoped practice for whole months also stoped lurk here that much I used to! or it's due to me say to myself that I will never become able to be fluent because I'm a loser, that's due to my anxiety what causes that lack of confidence to doing anything,How ever I'm still somehow able to understand the videos which the guys on them is English native as well as the English threads here and there.
now I decided to start another thing besides learning the language and most likely that thing going to be (take courses in who to make and eat healthy food, and how to become fit in your home) spend the whole day staring at frogs images don't worth it anymore so instead of shitbost all the day I can make my own food, working out 1 and half an hour per day, put 2hours into practice my English skills
so dude did you know best sites to learn from since you was learning some languages yourself.
Also try to find something you will be happy to do, you don't have to take courses or to be clear all the courses which you take didn't have to be talk about technology, programming etc)
look at yourself and you might notice what you want to do such like lose the weight as me if you are fat
or even become fit there's much of courses out there you can take, but didn't confuse your mind just focus in two things at least

Wew, I fell for this meme to. Have played with a handful of languages, built a handful of toy apps and websites, but nothing has come of it. I convinced myself I would come up with something that would at least be enough to earn me a shot at employment. No real inspiration came and I squandered so much time that I don't think any company could ever overlook my lengthy employment gap. In hindsight, I should have just got some Red Hat Linux certs and got a shitty entry level sys admin job. There always seems to be a few desperate companies needing to fill those positions. I got demoralized pursuing that line a work a long time ago when I had a bad interview at a company that I actually had a recommendation to. Again, my lack of job history was a big deal then and it is only worse now.
Part of me still debates continuing the pursuit of a tech job because I've invested so much time into it. I just cannot help feeling like I'm deluding myself and I need to pivot towards something else. Security jobs are always plentiful if I could just work up the nerve to go to a hiring event.
What obscure language did you learn? I debated learning Haskell because I heard companies were searching github repos for haskell programmers. I gave up on it though because they're searching for the usual Haskell programmer who is usually some advanced degree holding comp sci researcher type. I still feel an itch to learn ocaml sometimes. In addition to feeling like it is a waste of time, I too have kind of grown sick of computers and technology in general. i fantasize about owning my own small farm sometimes.

When I still had the balls to, I applied for some entry level programming jobs years ago. Back then it was a short time since I left school so my resume was school focused then a bit of self learned programming skills. "You don't need to know everything just apply anyways" Another trap I fell into. Without more complicated things than simple programs it was hard to talk about applicable skills. And I put technologies I don't actually have real work experience with so that was a dud.

I meant a spoken language. The programming languages I played with are the popular ones like C, C#, Java, Python, Javascript.
As the years gone by it appears that technology skills gradually increase as a standard work place skill. I lurk on job seeking forums and non-tech people say they know and use basic programming as a tool which wasn't common even a few years ago. I get the sense that a base knowledge of programming is a commodity and the differentiating factor is specialized knowledge or advanced degrees to apply in conjunction with coding skills.
I have an itching to look else where but I grew up in front of the TV and computer and never developed interest things other than technology. Programming is free with a computer and internet. Other interests require investment to buy tools or materials.
I don't have the nerve to apply for jobs right now. I don't have any proper training or skills. I am afraid I'll get burned again if i just put myself out there without being properly prepared for anything and with a large years long gap since school.

>What things have you learned that you have been able to put into practice?
Food preparation and cooking for one, though that's common enough where I can understand why nobody actually needs someone who makes food using more than a paper thin slice of corned beef.
I've never been too good with languages in general, but I've tried my hand at poetry and story telling anyhow. I don't really enjoy any of it in the end though.
Recently I've started learning more about flutes and their construction and maintenance. Still trying to figure it out, so I don't really know where that's gonna go. I've only built one flute and it doesn't make any noise whatsoever, so yeah.
As for the rest of my time, I spend that trying to learn how to live without anything at all beyond my own two hands, which is extremely difficult to find things for. Most of the books I found thus far contain information regarding things you need to buy in order to live without them. Eventually once I feel confident enough in this I will finally escape into some other place to die on my own terms.

This is also my problem. Over the years, I have acquired a lot of general, political, and historical knowledge, and I often keep up with current events, but I don't spend enough time practicing hard skills. Sometimes it feels nice knowing things that other people don't, other times it's depressing to know that I have almost no practical know-how.

I was the smartest in my class and one of the top in the school until grade 10. I always thought that I could just continuously absorb knowledge so I took many useless courses and spread my capacity to thin. Society only values specialists. Now I feel really stupid. I have no practical skills of note, haven't finished my degree (at least another 2 years), and am finding online course work impossible. I'm just sick of spending so much time and energy and money on memorizing for tests- always knowledge that I will soon forget. I am also finding it impossible to self-motivate to learning x complex subjects that would be nice to know but are incredibly boring to study.
I have sacrificed my life for academics and have nothing to show for it, but suffering and chronic illness.

That had never really occurred to me before, but you're absolutely right. Back when I was in elementary/middle school I used to be praised for my drawings. As I got older, I kept hearing people say that artists never make money and that there were no real jobs for artists, so I dropped it because it didn't seem practical at the time. I try not to dwell on mistakes of the past, but I often regret giving up art. I feel like I could have been really good if I stuck with it. I suppose it doesn't much matter now.

I always thought it would be fun to learn a less-than-common language with a friend, then we could have a secret language to speak to each other in. Only problem there is that I have no friends, so I never bothered learning another language. I sometimes consider picking up Japanese for the sake of video games and anime, but I'm too lazy.

For me, personally, having "friends" always, with no exception, correlated with being depressed and tired. It was due to the socializing, the stress that came from it, the self-loathing that resulted from not being perfect in their eyes and sometimes messing up jokes and the like, and most importantly, not getting to spend time by myself, doing things that make me happy. My life centered around making others happy because that's what I had to do to keep them around. And as we all know, society and especially (((psychologists))) tell you time and time again that you CANNOT live without friends.
It was an important thing to learn for me, but I did, and I've been far happier since.

>have you tried getting in touch with someone from here?
It sounds like a nice idea, but I'm not sure I would want to do it. Although I have a lot in common with most of the people on here (which is incredibly rare for me) I'm afraid I might fuck it up somehow. I've always had it rough socially, and I often say or do things that make people uncomfortable. Even in the past when I would start to get close to someone, I would always end up driving them away or growing apart.
>I know it entails losing anonymity and all the things that come with that
That is one of the things that holds me back. Once the anonymity is gone and the masks come off, everything changes. Any number of discords can serve as evidence to that claim. Maybe if it were a one on one type of interaction it might work, but even then, I have always been very mistrusting of people. Even to this day I don't entirely trust my family.
>I doubt people from here would be too judgmental
You're probably right. I try not to judge anyone here, and I'm sure that they likely extend that same courtesy to me, but I'm just not sure it would work out. Between my paranoia, distrustful nature, and social inadequacy, I'm certain I would screw it up, and once I did that I wouldn't feel comfortable coming back to /hikki/. This place is one of the few good things in my life, and although I know nothing last forever, I don't want to lose it prematurely.

At the end of the month I do 3-5 tests for that unit and see how I have done. I'm on the 7th unit at the moment and will take the tests on the 30th/31st. I don't enjoy the more abstract sections as much but overall i've enjoyed it a lot.
Anons who have learned a language, did it cost you money? Are there any online resources you recommend?

I like Namasensei's Japanese courses on Youtube, mostly cause he cuts the bullshit and starts out with grammar rules fairly early on. Words and kana i can look up easily, but grammar is harder, so it's helped me a lot.

I bought a heavy barbell and installed a chinup bar. I did a little research on exercise, have been following a plan, and now can say that I am much stronger, healthier, and happier.

Exercise helps some people with their mood. I can vouch for tiring yourself out, sometimes, i'll listen to some music loudly and pretend to conduct it. Flailing your arms around for 4 minutes really fucking gets to ya, it seems, and i usually feel pretty good after.
The reason exercise doesn't really work for me as a general rule is because it's so easy to compare yourself to others so i always feel inadequate for not making enough progress. It's why it pisses me off when normies on other boards shill for "just lift bro" as if it's a miracle cure.

I completely agree with you on that.

True i do push ups sometimes in my room or leg kicks while laying on my back and after doing those things i always feel like i'm in a good mood tbh.

Nine years 'a hikki. I have done nothing. I have learned nothing . The few hobbies I did have, I've lost interest in and abandoned. I've done a lot of reading over a diverse range of subjects, but I seem to completely lack the capacity to retain knowledge, so I just end up forgetting 95% of it. I've pissed away my existence with vidya, animu, and shitposting.

I'm very happy for you, glad to hear it, now don't stop for anything. Try to find an Aikido school with a Japanese Sensei, and explain your situation to him and that you are really sincere about changing your life. Ask him to please help you and he will, trust me, just do it.

I, too, feel a noticeable improvement in my mood after I exercise. Unfortunately, I don't exercise as often as I should, sometimes I get too discouraged, other times I just get lazy. Had a workout today though, it went well.

I bought the textbooks and am getting the tests/revision tips from here.
http://www.physicsandmathstutor.com/maths-revision/
I am doing core 1-4, mechanics 1-5 and further pure 1-3. I was thinking about taking the tests formally this year but the exam board i've been using the textbooks from, (edexcel) have changed their syllabus for the first time in 20 years so I'll have to start from zero again but I should be able to do it in 2019.
I don't know what I hope to gain from it in the long run but if i'm putting in the work I might as well get the qualifications.

Hey guys Board owner here so while i was sleeping i came up with an awesome idea for a book about a guy Who's a hikikomori and hasn't been outside in 35 years and after those 35 years of withdrawal he finally leaves his apartment only to realize that he's the last white man on earth and that the white race has gone completely extinct due to multiculturalism around the world so because he's the last white man on earth he kinda becomes somewhat of a celebrity.
What do you guys think is that a cool book idea??.

If within 35 years you're the last white man that means that all the other white people have been killed and you likely will not be a celebrity, you'll be killed. Or alternatively bought and sold around east Asia as genetic material.

Sounds like it would make for an interesting read. Unfortunately, it probably wouldn't be very popular outside of the demographic of white hikikomoris, and if it ever did generate a following, you would likely be attacked for 'racism' and hauled off to prison for extreme thought-crime. I would say write it for fun, and then share it here.

Reading fiction, reading philosophy, learning how to daytrade cryptocurrencies and trading everyday to make profit. Learned to program with several new languages, including Go which is swiftly becoming my new all time favorite language to use. Already taught myself how to build entire websites with it from scratch. I was a professional software developer working for a major US bank before becoming a hikki so I'm looking to learn more modern technology stacks and stay the fuck out of the banking field forever. I hate banks so much with all their stupid KYC/AML bullshit. I hope to get in at a cool startup or something. I would also highly prefer to work remotely now that I'm so comfortable with staying inside… Trying to get more sources of income. I get $700 a week from NEETBUX which is enough for food and rent and bills but it doesn't give me a lot to save up and invest with. Just trying to make money so I can be a millionaire and buy a nice secluded house one day.

I work at a "cool startup" that lets me work from home (though I'm only 30 minutes from the office). Great thing about hikki is I can save almost all of my money (my only hobbies are reading literature and reading manga, along with some small programming projects for fun) and theoretically I could retire at around 32 if I put all my savings at a 3% interest rate, which gives me around $40k a year off interest. I don't like thinking about money too much so I haven't looked into investing at all. I don't think I'd be that great at it though. All that said none of it really helps with my depression/what's-the-point-of-it-all mentality.
My advice to you is if you want a remote job go on hackernews who is hiring threads and ctrl-f for REMOTE. They are surprisingly common and well-paying, but as you know the interviews can be very challenging.
Cool to see another lit/cs person here. I used to be into philosophy in college but never really liked it, other than some select ones like the Stoics and Daoists. Russell/Ayer/Frege/etc are cool too.

If you had said something like sewing, cooking, or woodworking it would have been regrettable, but the only thing you missed through reading novels instead is the ability to act snobbish about your knowledge.
