Things you've learned and put into practice Hikki 09/04/17 (Mon) 13:21:56 f1fd30 No. 164 [View All]
It's often that hikki and NEET talk about learning things and becoming smarter while being shut in. I fell for this mindset too but in hindsight it was shallow and pseudo-intellectual garbage. I went through a science/STEM atheism neckbeard phase.
I did the programming thing for years but didn't advance far enough to be able to do real world things with it. Now I have lost the drive to learn more. The idea that all technology is fun no longer appeals to me because it's impossible to know everything. Only a surface level knowledge of many things is not useful. I lack the focus and intelligence to get deep into a topic like become proficient at solving those hard programming tests on leetcode or hackerrank.
I learned a bit of some obscure language (but now forgotten it). I was able to watch Youtube videos at slow speed and understand basic things. It was never put into practice because people who use that language are so rare. It's also useless to me anyways on account of the whole shut in thing. I won't be using it in real life ever.
So ultimately what did I spend time on these things for. I have lost faith in the self learning thing.
What things have you learned that you have been able to put into practice?

I learned of the value of 8 hours of regular, uninterrupted sleep, a good cup of coffee, eating regularly and eating well, and most importantly, partaking in your hobbies every day and recognizing people who want to pull you away from your hobbies as what they are - people who don't want you to be happy.

I've gotten into learning languages lately as well. My parents spoke Russian pretty well, so I can understand it, but speak it not too fluently. And I took Japanese courses for a while. So I got back into it all.

This is so true being hikki gives you tons of free time to build up your skills on what you are good at especially with stuff that involves the computer.

That had never really occurred to me before, but you're absolutely right. Back when I was in elementary/middle school I used to be praised for my drawings. As I got older, I kept hearing people say that artists never make money and that there were no real jobs for artists, so I dropped it because it didn't seem practical at the time. I try not to dwell on mistakes of the past, but I often regret giving up art. I feel like I could have been really good if I stuck with it. I suppose it doesn't much matter now.

I always thought it would be fun to learn a less-than-common language with a friend, then we could have a secret language to speak to each other in. Only problem there is that I have no friends, so I never bothered learning another language. I sometimes consider picking up Japanese for the sake of video games and anime, but I'm too lazy.

For me, personally, having "friends" always, with no exception, correlated with being depressed and tired. It was due to the socializing, the stress that came from it, the self-loathing that resulted from not being perfect in their eyes and sometimes messing up jokes and the like, and most importantly, not getting to spend time by myself, doing things that make me happy. My life centered around making others happy because that's what I had to do to keep them around. And as we all know, society and especially (((psychologists))) tell you time and time again that you CANNOT live without friends.
It was an important thing to learn for me, but I did, and I've been far happier since.

Absolutely. This board is one of the few consistently good things in my life. I'm never too unhappy when browsing/posting here.
>>2767
>have you tried getting in touch with someone from here?
It sounds like a nice idea, but I'm not sure I would want to do it. Although I have a lot in common with most of the people on here (which is incredibly rare for me) I'm afraid I might fuck it up somehow. I've always had it rough socially, and I often say or do things that make people uncomfortable. Even in the past when I would start to get close to someone, I would always end up driving them away or growing apart.
>I know it entails losing anonymity and all the things that come with that
That is one of the things that holds me back. Once the anonymity is gone and the masks come off, everything changes. Any number of discords can serve as evidence to that claim. Maybe if it were a one on one type of interaction it might work, but even then, I have always been very mistrusting of people. Even to this day I don't entirely trust my family.
>I doubt people from here would be too judgmental
You're probably right. I try not to judge anyone here, and I'm sure that they likely extend that same courtesy to me, but I'm just not sure it would work out. Between my paranoia, distrustful nature, and social inadequacy, I'm certain I would screw it up, and once I did that I wouldn't feel comfortable coming back to /hikki/. This place is one of the few good things in my life, and although I know nothing last forever, I don't want to lose it prematurely.

I haven't put it into practice but i've been learning maths for the last year or so. There are 12 units i'm doing and I spend a month on each. At the end of the month I do 3-5 tests for that unit and see how I have done. I'm on the 7th unit at the moment and will take the tests on the 30th/31st. I don't enjoy the more abstract sections as much but overall i've enjoyed it a lot.
Anons who have learned a language, did it cost you money? Are there any online resources you recommend?

Exercise helps some people with their mood. I can vouch for tiring yourself out, sometimes, i'll listen to some music loudly and pretend to conduct it. Flailing your arms around for 4 minutes really fucking gets to ya, it seems, and i usually feel pretty good after.
The reason exercise doesn't really work for me as a general rule is because it's so easy to compare yourself to others so i always feel inadequate for not making enough progress. It's why it pisses me off when normies on other boards shill for "just lift bro" as if it's a miracle cure.

Nine years 'a hikki. I have done nothing. I have learned nothing . The few hobbies I did have, I've lost interest in and abandoned. I've done a lot of reading over a diverse range of subjects, but I seem to completely lack the capacity to retain knowledge, so I just end up forgetting 95% of it. I've pissed away my existence with vidya, animu, and shitposting.

I bought the textbooks and am getting the tests/revision tips from here.
http://www.physicsandmathstutor.com/maths-revision/
I am doing core 1-4, mechanics 1-5 and further pure 1-3. I was thinking about taking the tests formally this year but the exam board i've been using the textbooks from, (edexcel) have changed their syllabus for the first time in 20 years so I'll have to start from zero again but I should be able to do it in 2019.
I don't know what I hope to gain from it in the long run but if i'm putting in the work I might as well get the qualifications.

Hey guys Board owner here so while i was sleeping i came up with an awesome idea for a book about a guy Who's a hikikomori and hasn't been outside in 35 years and after those 35 years of withdrawal he finally leaves his apartment only to realize that he's the last white man on earth and that the white race has gone completely extinct due to multiculturalism around the world so because he's the last white man on earth he kinda becomes somewhat of a celebrity.
What do you guys think is that a cool book idea??.

Sounds like it would make for an interesting read. Unfortunately, it probably wouldn't be very popular outside of the demographic of white hikikomoris, and if it ever did generate a following, you would likely be attacked for 'racism' and hauled off to prison for extreme thought-crime. I would say write it for fun, and then share it here.

Reading fiction, reading philosophy, learning how to daytrade cryptocurrencies and trading everyday to make profit. Learned to program with several new languages, including Go which is swiftly becoming my new all time favorite language to use. Already taught myself how to build entire websites with it from scratch. I was a professional software developer working for a major US bank before becoming a hikki so I'm looking to learn more modern technology stacks and stay the fuck out of the banking field forever. I hate banks so much with all their stupid KYC/AML bullshit. I hope to get in at a cool startup or something. I would also highly prefer to work remotely now that I'm so comfortable with staying inside… Trying to get more sources of income. I get $700 a week from NEETBUX which is enough for food and rent and bills but it doesn't give me a lot to save up and invest with. Just trying to make money so I can be a millionaire and buy a nice secluded house one day.

I work at a "cool startup" that lets me work from home (though I'm only 30 minutes from the office). Great thing about hikki is I can save almost all of my money (my only hobbies are reading literature and reading manga, along with some small programming projects for fun) and theoretically I could retire at around 32 if I put all my savings at a 3% interest rate, which gives me around $40k a year off interest. I don't like thinking about money too much so I haven't looked into investing at all. I don't think I'd be that great at it though. All that said none of it really helps with my depression/what's-the-point-of-it-all mentality.
My advice to you is if you want a remote job go on hackernews who is hiring threads and ctrl-f for REMOTE. They are surprisingly common and well-paying, but as you know the interviews can be very challenging.
Cool to see another lit/cs person here. I used to be into philosophy in college but never really liked it, other than some select ones like the Stoics and Daoists. Russell/Ayer/Frege/etc are cool too.
