I'm learning to make my own OS (for larping purposes, obviously) and was thinking about making a *nix. I've seen alot of hate for unices being too hard and having very limited software support, but past that, not much else. Why do people hate Unix and its various clones, decendants, and forks?

You only can get source codes of Unix-like OSes for references. You cannot get any source codes of any other OSes.

You should give it more thought if your intention is to "make a *nix", since if all you want is what's already out there, then the problem reduces to doing a git clone && make. Decide what you want that would actually be useful or interesting. It isn't necessarily for a desktop/laptop. There are lots of cool chips out there.
Also, read wiki.osdev.org instead of asking dumb questions on even dumber boards.
