Rigid tree hierarchy is unsatisfactory for file organization, since file can belong in more than one category.

One solution is to implement flat file system with enough meta data for files to choke on and then just search it for what tags you need (Think *booru but on a file system level and for any file type, not just images).

Unfortunately, tagged file systems are not very compatible with how we currently interact with our data storage, so transparent implementation in modern environments is rather hard.

We will have to either write an OS from scratch or develop enough crutches and workarounds to fit tagged data storage into what we already have.

I was trying to implement something simple to play around with.

A plain text file for a database, a simple shell script to compute sha256sum of a file, move it into specified folder and add db entry, and another script to grep the db and pretty-print the results.

I wonder how much stress this contraption would be able to tolerate. But I got distracted by vydia, so nothing to report or even code to show yet.

Another option is to just give up, dump everything into ~/unsorted, sort it by date and hope that you can find what you need by filename alone.

Recent items, I drop on the desktop. Later, I move things around by file type.

mv *pdf ~/docs/pdf/.

mv *gif *jpg ~/docs/img/.

mv *txt *rtf *doc[,x] ~/docs/txt/.

I also group things by project, when there are a lot of related files.

~/docs/8ch/ppt

~/docs/8ch/pdf

~/docs/8ch/txt

~/docs/8ch/img

~/docs/8ch/vsd

~/docs/8ch/tar

save a hardlink inside a /storage/ folder in the root of the partition.

and if another file with same signature is replaced with the hardlink from the /storage/.

it IS a bad idea because if something modify the file, otherswill be modified as well.

.

and everything else is from user

/apps/

/downloads/

/desktop/

in each app folder there is a folder for each app with a .sh script that rebuild the ENV variables to "fake" a user so..

/apps/browser/userprofile <--is the new user

/apps/browser/run.sh <-- rebuilds env and stuff

/apps/browser/ < -- directory with the binaries to runn app.

It only occurred to me recently, but so far every "which directory does this go in" problem can be solved by putting it it where I instinctively think it goes, and then symlinking it anywhere else it goes. So in the booru analogy an image resides under the character's name tag, and gets symlinked into any directory representing an applicable tag.

If there's a downside to this, I don't know what it is.

If you are NOT just an autistic semi-retarded mixed race gay pedophile weeb organizing his guro-loli porn collections, this may help.

(1) create a .txt file tree of all your files with byte count, block count, and other information is needed.

(2) create a Hash of every file with a recursive program like md5deep."Check for file errors and changes"

(3) seperate your files into major groups and keep them inside disk images. "This makes copying and deleting the entire file collection much faster."
