How much better is it compared to your average Linux distro?

It is like Linux in the sense that it (might) detect(s) your hardware but it is horrible at making it work out of the box (unlike Open/NetBSD), except it is even worse than Linux as it doesn't support as many hardware as Linux. Other than the fact it has a big fat CoC and ports management is shit, I've never used it outside of a brief test with VB. It is the only BSD (and perhaps Dragonfly as well) that supports the proprietary nvidya driver. If you can't afford AMD hardware at the moment you could try NetBSD if your card is supported by the FOSS nouveau driver (released in 2016 for NetBSD), as NetBSD is the only BSD with a working nouveau port. OpenBSD has the ancient nv driver that won't work with anything recent or non-ancient, so avoid nvidya if you intend to install OpenBSD. Also avoid post-gcn AMD GPUs. They use the unstable amdgpu driver which has caused deadlocks under BSD. Overall, FreeBSD is stated to be the worst BSD when it comes to hardware support, irrespective of their native nvidya driver (you are retarded if you bought nvidya anyway).

you got the built in programs separated from the programs you install, so it has that going for it.

The main thing that makes it better is the license. But that hasn't exactly trickled down in the PC hardware space. BSD has been far more beneficial in commercial areas and specific hardware setups.

FreeBSD Is fixed, guys. They told the Geek Feminist trannies to fuck off and forked LLVM's CoCk. Half this shit's just basic netiquette.
