Hello homos. My friend's going to college soon and he keeps fucking bugging me to get a smartphone so he can contact me.
He wants me to get WhatsApp but fuck that, is there any messenger I can use that's actually secure and isn't a botnet?
I've heard good things about Signal, but supposedly they're working with feds. It also requires a phone number.
I've heard good things about Wickr, but it's closed source so it could easily being Zucc'ing you.
I'm torn between those two, leaning towards Wickr solely because I don't need a phone number.
Are there any better ones? It has to have a PC and mobile client.

Session is a decentralized signal clone that doesn't require a phone number.
XMPP is similar but has many more servers, clients. XMPP is also very mature (~1995). The clients for mobile aren't very friendly though.

Sorry, anon. I misunderstood the question in your OP. I thought you were asking what was better than Signal and Wickr.
If you're looking for something relatively secure that a normie could use then Signal would be your best bet. It's open source, easy to use, with desktop and mobile clients available. As for whether or not they work the feds, I don't know. However, I do remember they were issued a subpoena one time by the feds for an account and they complied but handed over almost no data because they don't have that much data. It's one of the reasons behind requiring a phone number (no username/password database schema). It's a downside privacy-wise but it's an upside in terms of data retention. Besides, Signal was never designed for privacy anyway.

Briar gets out because it has an Android client only.
Other options are hosting your own XMPP or Matrix server, but that would require more time, money, knowledge and overhead.
Easiest would be Session (Loki), Jami, Signal, Riot (Matrix) or to register to some XMPP server and use different apps for different platforms.
