This thread is about the comic who "lauched" the furry fandom : Albedo Anthropomorphics
First released in 1983 and created by Steve Gallacci, it is currently in hiatus
The main protagonist is Erma Felna, a young cat who is an officer of the Extraplanetary Defense Force (EDF).
The EDF is challenged by the Independent Lapine Republic (ILR) which is populated by a species of supremacist rabbits who favor taking colonies and settled areas by force.
So the comic follows Erma Felna as she is involved in this political conflit against her will.
The artist created a website where he uploads on a "daily" schedule scans of the comics

About how often does Albedo update the archives?
Looking at it, it seems like he's updating every couple days and the issues arent that long. For easy reading it might be best to wait until an issue is done, or at least upload in 4-5 page chunks if he updates regularly enough.
Only saying this because there's no way to merge images into a post besides deleting it.
I'm on issue 3 so still early but I expect it will be miles better than whatever military drama JACK tried to do.

Fuck dragons in that game though. At least with the giant wasps they cluster around enough for quick disposal but the dragons are always fanned out and dive right for you making missiles both the best and worst weapon for taking them on.

I'm doing a playthrough with each character to see which ones i really like.
So far through the ranger and air raider. I like the air raider but I would kill for a non-explosion gun for higher level ants. But calling down mechs and air strikes is super fun. And throwing down stationary turrets is great for holding the line.
All in all I would say I had more fun with the ranger just because my loot drops were great and kept me above the damage curve with some of the bullshit you get hit up with later.
Think I'll try out Fencer after that.

Am guy who was quoted. I actually collected the comic and followed this guy as best I could.

He's a control freak with his work, and absolutely puritanical with Science Fiction, eg, he ranted about everything wrong in The Expanse after somebody compared it to Albedo. Essentially, nobody else could do a good enough job with his baby. He's "that guy". Like, one of the earliest "that guys". He would sperg out if people didn't envision his creation exactly as he did.
His wife died and he disappeared and quit working on it, but wouldn't let anybody else do anything with it.
The 2004 (and 3rd RPG made for it) was a fucking miracle it happened at all, because despite being a consultant, he hated just the general focus of it.
One book *did* kind of happen, it ended up as an adventure module for the 199(2? 5?) 2nd RPG despite being originally planned as a novel.
He was approached with studio offers, but turned them all down.
His last publisher tried to finish the series without him, but this pissed him off so much he actually came out from under his rock to publish a 5th Volume (... lol only 2 issues in that "volume") which included a mini-comic mocking what they tried to do with it.
He NEVER EVER did reprints, only did small print runs, and would sit at conventions and gladly sell you part of one volume for 100$. He did this until nearly last year or so. He claims he "got tired of conventions" but he also ran out of issues to sell around the same time...
Not exaggerating, and IIRC it was actually only half the first volume for 100$ when you could get that on Ebay for 40$ anyway.
The one "reprint" was actually a complete re-do of the first issue because he thought the original 1st issue wasn't good enough. It is fucking missing a page. He didn't upload the missing page for a fucking decade or so.

Maximum kek, considering that issue is from ~1989 at the latest, and in fucking 2017 he STILL hasn't published a full collected works despite promising many times over decades.
He did do the "Command Review" volumes which took four issues at a time, sometime back in the 90's, up through the original 16 issues. They had a lower print run than the original comic it was supposed to make easier to find, and vol 3 & vol 4 are basically nonexistant. He basically just forgot to keep putting them together despite doing ~32 issues before never fucking finishing the series anyway.
So, technically, the first half got "reprints" which were harder to find than the actual comic, and they just fucking stopped in the middle of the 2nd volume because fuck you.
The Command Review copies were interesting because they had additional notes from Steve talking about extended universe and alternative plans for characters and story. These, as with the fanmail and closing words in the physical original comic copies, are missing from the scans he's uploading.
It's unfortunate because IIRC there was some interesting worldbuilding and extended universe snippets in them. Something he has never done is actually sit down and collect that all in one place, despite his extreme hatred of fans not "getting" his setting because they could only find two issues and a TVtropes page.
Jesus fucking christ, he's going to die of old age before he gets his shit together, just fucking finishes it, and publishes a collected omnibus. What's going to happen, probably, is he'll unexpectedly die and either the rights get stuck in limbo (eg, JUST the first issue of the sequel now has it's rights tied up with Radiocomix, the rest of the sequel is with one publisher, and the original was spread across 4(?) publishers half of which are gone) and it's forgotten forever, or his last publisher will do the thing again where they try to finish the series without him.

Volume 2 is a lot of character stuff, background stuff, and building up to the original big infamous cliffhanger ending.

I don't want to play the devil's advocate with Gallacci, but I think I need to explain some of the criticism regarding his work, especially toward younger fans who doesn't know the context of the whole deal, being Albedo a three-decade work.

I agree with that part of Gallacci being a jerk, but take into account he was a former Vietnam War veteran this is somewhat understandable, even if that doesn't justify entirely his actions.
I haven't seen The Expanse entirely, but what the little I saw, I think The Expanse is a very different beast (no pun intended) from Albedo, in the same way Star Wars is very different from Star Trek, other than being both sci-fi works.

That's because "Platinum Catalyst" utterly screwed everything Albedo is about, especially regarding the ILR and Enchawah, since that edition depicts the ILR as utterly evil assholes without any redeeming qualities, and Enchawah as just another soulless shady corp. while the EDF is portrayed in a more positive light. compared with the earlier editions, when all the sides of the war were portrayed equally, just like the comic. It doesn't help no one from the earlier editions worked on it other than Gallacci (like Paul Kidd, who was the writer of the previous editions)

Yeah, I know about that. In fact, I knew one of the artists from Shanda Fantasy Arts who worked in that attempt (I will not reveal his name, BTW. Let's say I personally knew him and he told me all the whole deal and his career could be affected if I reveal his name), and while the continuation was REALLY damn good (and believe me, it promised to be a ONE HELL of a finale) just like the Platinum Catalyst RPG, it also screwed with the established canon by including humans, interspecies romance with Erma (something not posible by canon), depicting the ILR in a very worse light, and crossing over with Katmandu, another SFA comic, who never had a relation with Albedo in any significant way.

As far I know, Gallacci has no sons and, taking into account what he already said about his family and by some sources, none of his living relatives has any kind of interest in his work, even for exploting the rights. Unless Gallacci writes some kind of clause that prevent his family from selling the rights to anyone that could continue the story, the only way someone could continue with the story in the realm of fanfiction, and since he will be dead by then, he will not be able to sue anyone, nor his family will be interested to litigate against anyone who would do an Albedo continuation fanfic either.

Yeah, I tried to physically collect the comic. It was not only nearly physically impossible, but if you wanted to buy from Gallacci yourself, he was asking 2x as much as ebay. 100$ is quoted from one guy on a forum somewhere IIRC, we were discussing, he was happy he got the first 6 or 8 issues (w/ command review 1 &/or 2 , since the actual #2 issue is so fucking valuable due to Usagi) or something for 100$. I got that form ebay for like, 40$? One of several listings around that price. Steve thinks it's more valuable than it is. It's rare, but not particularly valuable excepting the #2 issue, Vol 2 #10, and Vol 1 #1 in that order, ignoring the command review 3 & 4.

How complete is your collection? The only reason I've actually read the entire comic, start to finish, the only way it was physically possible, I scored a rare copy for relatively cheap I noticed a number of the collectors didn't have. I prioritized those with a near-complete collection. They were military. Traded for scans of the stuff I didn't have scans of.
Then Gallacci finally decides to go digital 15 fucking years too late out of the blue. So I quit doing trades and decided I could just wait a couple years.

The comic didn't hold value from what I saw. I didn't lose more than 40$ in trades based on prior sales. I'm more angry I was halfway through archiving the comic, a huge fucking effort considering I just had a flatbed scanner, to upload an HD scan collection myself. I've still got post-2nd-volume super-HD re-print quality scans just sitting unedited on an HDD somewhere. I was planning on a fan-made Omnibus of reprint quality.

Yes and no. Mostly "NO" for the comic itself. It needed a lot more time in the oven for writing, pacing the storyboarding, and overall focus.
The setting and concepts and overall Intellectual-Property potential is a 10/10, and more things should have been done with it. A lot more. I'm disappointed the only guy who tried to write books in the setting never published any of them. Speaking of which, I've seen some impressive 1 & 2 man animation projects only a couple minutes long. If I had the skill I'd be all over making a fake trailer for a "new Netflix animated series" for it as a fan tribute.

I used to watch stevegallacci on fa. I remember seeing this in comic shops back in its time and later I found the usenet furry groups and realized that it was a thing. I thought it was cool that he was on fa, until I discovered his tendency to go into young artists' galleries and rip on them for having no talent or because they like to draw one thing that he thinks is stupid. The first couple times I saw it I thought he had some points but eventually I saw the pattern of just shitting on anyone who's young and enthusiastic about making furry comics. He gets plenty of fan service and his buddies join in the chorus and generally make people feel like shit for trying.
He uploads a lot of decades old shit and I don't even know if he still draws or writes. It's cool that we have an insight into the story and characters of albedo but his bitter old man attitude is really off-putting and unnecessary.

I'm going to take an educated guess and say that he's right about 99.999% of the times.
There is a very definite line that separates those who are truly trying and those who are just after fake internet points. You tend to get a sixth sense for it when you've been in the business long enough.
The vast majority of furry "artists" run along the latter side and should be physically forbidden from holding a pencil ever again.
I find having a bunch of people echoing whatever you say just because you said it is a shitty thing, but it still serves to balance out the other side, which boasts just as big of an echo chamber for the same reason, which is the reason why it's a shitty thing in the first place.
Besides, if you were in the 0.001% who doesn't really deserve it, you're not going to get discouraged by some bitter old fuck being mean to you on the internet. If you do, you deserve it. If all it takes for you to throw in the towel is some stranger having a louder virtual echo chamber than you do, then you're not ready for the real world where you'll be physically and psychologically abused because you dared to try doing something that would bring you happiness.
