Renamon's allure to the furry fandom is probably the best example of unrealistic expectations or lack of self-awareness in a majority of people. The most favored form is often the original Renamon - a strict disciplined character with a lithe feminine build, with an attitude rather similar to Rei Ayanami with some aggression from Asuka - and this is a person who would look upon the people waifuing her with likely disgust and confusion, which is ironically part of her appeal, the strict, no-nonsense character with some human-social naivety representing a person far above most "decadent" fans.
Also the voice and 'sex' of the digimon in general and Renamon in particular lent itself to this regard. Konaka approved of German Renamon being male. Renamon isn't about the lack of gender but the merging of aspects of both. That's why the Digimon's theme is Yin-Yang, that's why the visual design is designed around complementary colors, that's why its original voice is a deep and feminine (the German version inverted that to a bright masculine one = same principle).
This also comes from the misuse (or mistranslation) of the word "gender". Renamon meant that digimon don't have SEX even if they do have 'sexes', as she conceded being a girl in the same scene (English dub/sub). The entire point of that was that Renamon was wrong: She is trying to think of herself in rigid Digimon terms, but it goes on to show that she has a whole inner life and personality of her own that makes her a girl.
