Start with the classics. Pythagoras was arguably the most advanced master in recent history, he studied in all of the greater mystery schools of the time, from Delphi, to Egypt and Israel.
Classical metaphysics are the fundamental basis for any sort of occult knowledge, whether you recognize it at the time, or not. Everything from Orthodox theosis to Buddhist enlightenment can be understood through it.
Once you have a good understanding of the basic behavior of concepts, objects, and ontology, you can begin studying alchemy. Metaphysics is concerned with the how of reality, while alchemy studies the what. Religion, by the way, is the why. You'll learn the ontological progression of concepts as the foundation of existence, time, and space, as well as how these concepts intermingle to create physical end objects, thoughts, and souls. You'll learn what humanity represents in the larger scheme, and gain a neutral understanding of how to develop yourself, whichever direction you may choose.
As an aside, you can also get into practical alchemy once you've understood the basics, it's a self-sufficient occult and spiritual mystery.
With this theoretical basis as a foundation, you can then look into any magical tradition that strikes your fancy. You'll find that chaos magic is one of the simpler, less complicated areas of practice. It's good for securing material gains without a lot of training and development, but you'll probably want to get into energy work or qigong for more immediate and flashy occult abilities, as well as an introspective spiritual tradition. Some religions, traditions, and mysteries combine multiple, or even all, of these areas into one, you'll be able to discern them with your theoretical knowledge.
This should be fairly well-suited for a Neptunian type. I've more or less followed this in reverse, as a Saturnine, but regardless of the order, all steps will be required sooner or later.
