Not yet, but that's part of the reason I said his films are different, at least in genre. Galax is about a "man-doll" humanoid, A Bomb Was Stolen is a black and white comedy with no dialogue, and he also directed a medieval fantasy film called The White Moor. Quite a range just in those three

Science fiction is used in this film as a framework for Alain Resnais to explore familiar themes of memory, time, love, loss, death. Claude Ridder is selected for a secret government experiment focused on time travel. He will travel back one year, stay there for one minute, and return to the present. But the experiment does not work as expected. Instead of returning to the present, Ridder hops to another time in his past, and then another. He re-lives a random sequence of abrupt moments from work, from vacation, and from his romantic relationships.
The events of Ridder's life come to him just like memories come to each of us, fragmented and often unexpected. As a viewer you piece together the story arc of Ridder's life from these discrete, disjointed moments. The story gets more interesting as macabre aspects of Ridder's past emerge.
Resnais's background as an editor was likely a major factor in developing the concept for Je t'aime, je t'aime. The film uses carefully chaotic editing to create one of the best cinematic representations of a free associative, self-reflective mind. Ridder's time travel is functionally an introspection, an examination of his own life. Introspection is further emphasized by the "time machine" itself, which is a small chamber that looks like a brain. Ridder enters that brain in order to enter his own brain.
