Here's his most famous student film. It would become the basis of his first feature film.

And here is an interesting article about the Star Wars prequels.
What do you guys think of this man?
Personally, I think that he's the most misunderstood person to ever direct a movie.
Every single film he's made has been worthy of study and interest.
From his earliest student films to Revenge Of The Sith.

American Graffiti was fun and I've wanted to see THX1138 for a while. I'll have to watch that short.
I never got into George Lucas or Star Wars very much though. Maybe I need to revisit the OG trilogy as an adult. Admittedly I've got some revulsion for all of it because of the crazy fans.
Is he better at writing than directing?

His Ideas are inspired, but his dialogue is sub par.

He deserves some credit for helping to produce Kagemusha

that makes sense

Didn't know that. I don't hear his name connected to many arthouse or restoration projects. It seems like most of his attention has been directed toward mass commercialization and franchising of his successes like Indiana Jones and Star Wars

He's a huge fan of Kurosawa, same with Spielberg and Coppala. Coppola also helped fund Kagemusha, check out this commercial they did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-A2EH0vyd4

Seems like everyone did, i heard the same with Serge Silberman, or was it Ran/Dreams?
Bizarre that Kurosawa needed any support from anybody other than publishers, taking into account his extremely strong reputation
Haven't understood the whole financing issues with his 80's projects, maybe publishers avoided him due his supposed arrogance/him being an old man

I love the art direction of the Star Wars films.
(forgive the bitrate starved screencap).

It's about how man is out of step with nature in a bad way (we move too fast), but how nature is still much more powerful than we are.
Notice speed. The car zipping by. The camera focusing on the filmmakers in the desert (after it had been on the animals), followed by sped up footage.
Then it stops dead, and shows us the power nature has to wash away our works, and to turn out the lights.
And this was a STUDENT film!
I can't stress enough how overlooked George Lucas is as a filmmaker. It's almost become an obsession for me.

I am very saddened we will never see what George had in mind for Episodes VII, VIII & IX.
Too bad a rather vocal part of the ‘fans’ caused him to end his film-maker career early, and sell Star Wars.
I suspect a growing number will begin to re-evaluate their opinion on him and his work in the coming years. You don’t hear fans of the OT only mention that ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ got mixed and even bad reviews when it came out.
