So I'd like to do a thread of people I feel like got lucky. Either it was being in the right place at the right time, or being surrounded by talented people who fixed up their work and made them look a bit better.

So post a film maker who you feel got lucky. Explain why.

George lucas. While having the vision to create some things that a bunch of people loved, we all know that the original cut of star wars was a mess. Over and over again, through the countless efforts of great people he surrounded himself with, lucas reaped the benefits and by casual movie lovers, is considered a visionary. The truth of the matter is that I believe dearly, and truly that no one else managed to get nearly as lucky as lucas did.

But who else did? I know that there are more.

I can't think of someone who was lucky by circumstance. But Sofia Coppola got a nice break due to nepotism. She owes a lot to her family name and father's industry connections. I'm not sure she could have made it as a director on her abilities alone. While I haven't seen any of her recent work, I will assume she's still being praised for making lukewarm films. She made it work though, so she deserves some credit for sustaining a career.

Usually I think people make their own luck. There are no guarantees, but nothing will happen at all if you don't position yourself to succeed.

Lucas isn't lucky. Vid related and American Graffiti are genuinely great. American Graffiti was a huge hit for such a low budget movie, that's how he managed to jump into star wars.

I see nothing wrong with Star Wars. I've seen the original cut of the ep IV, it was fine. Lucas has always considered Star Wars as a kind of farce, a pop take on 2001-like space drama that was popular in the 70's, and IMO it succeeded at what it was intended to be. Fun flick with grandeur, decently realistic visuals.

THIS

Thank god for common sense.

Lucas is a genius visionary with range beyond belief.

The desperate attempts to defame and minimize him by cretins like OP are getting more and more tiring as time marches on.

The Russo Brothers.

I mean, how else could they possibly have skyrocketed to the point they're at now if not for SHEER DUMBASS LUCK.

Welcome to Collinwood was pretty mediocre, You Me and Dupree was absolutely mindless garbage, and the only other credits they have are in television. Comedy television, at that. Granted, that included Arrested Development and Community, two of the most critically acclaimed comedic TV series ever made, but that's still pretty low-brow if you're talking in cinematic terms.

Then all of a sudden, they make Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And by some unexplained miracle, it's actually... GOOD. Not just good, but one of the best damn MCU films ever made! It put The Avengers to SHAME when it came out.

By all logical accounts of their track record, that never should have happened. But it did.

... HOW????? ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

But then their luck ran out when Captain America: Civil War ended up being a steaming hot fucking mess that Rotten Tomatoes and the MCUcks praised anyway because they're dumbass sheeple sucking Disney/Marvel cock like the hive-minded fucktards they are.

But even if it was just for one movie, the Russos should not have gotten so lucky. Yet they did anyway.

SOMEBODY EXPLAIN THIS SHIT TO ME.

This. The Russo Brothers lucked out because Disney has all directors use the same formula, which always prints money for them. These guys are no different then any other director under Marvel, because Disney assumes a dictator-like stance on its works.

Compared to Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, you bet your ass it was. But for MCU standards, it kicks the shit out of its predecessors.

Now, I agree with you, but discussing cape movies (especially this new wave of cape movies) attracts a low IQ crowd. The type of crowd I come to /film/ to avoid.

Let's nip this in the bud pls.

Absolutely wrong.

Read any of the three J.W. Rinzler making of books.

Besides proving Lucas to be one of the most genius filmmakers ever (although he reaches his absolute peak with the last two prequel films), they're also some of the most autistically in depth books on the stages of a film being formed that i've ever read. The farthest thing from fluff pieces you'll ever read.

what does the existence of this article prove? i just googled the author's name and in another article he literally calls Michael Bay 'some kind of genius'

https://www.newyorker.com/culture/richard-brody/review-transformers-the-last-knight-michael-bay-experimental-filmmaker

can't take seriously a critic who calls any of these two hacks a genius

a couple of visually appealing shots also doesn't make him a good director

Also that article shows that he clearly has a much higher opinion of Lucas.

Samefagging because I keep forgetting things I want to say- but to add, I think shit like this is the weirdest part. There's almost a cult of hate around Lucas.

You can plainly see that the author has wildly different opinions of the two men but you tried to smear Lucas anyway.

There's an irrational anger at play when it comes to Lucas.

Michael Bay is one of the most likely filmmaker to be called vulgar auteur in the cinephile community. Same goes for PWS Anderson. And tbh I would thoroughly think about it before simply disagreeing just because hating Bay/Lucas/etc. is the smart nerd's opinion.

Also how do you not know Richard Brody?

I do think Lucas is the most overlooked filmmaker of our time.

Not in vulgar auteurism way, but in a "he's wildly imaginative and his movies have such a range of powerful images and a lot in the way of theming as well". Kind of way.

He's more than overlooked because of how much of a laughing stock he's become to people who haven't worked with him.
