Asking here, because it doesn't even have to be an action movie, but I just want to experience the typical tropes of adventure, mystery, exploration, treasure-hunting, etc

Not quite what you're asking for, but I think this video is worth watching. Someone edited a side-by-side comparison of Raiders of the Lost Ark with "30 different adventure films made between 1919-1973" that contain similar scenes, starting with the Paramount logo dissolving into a real mountain peak.

Unfortunately I don't know the source of many of the clips

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raiders_of_the_Lost_Ark:_The_Adaptation
>Shooting for the film began in 1982, when Strompolos, Zala and Lamb were only 12 years old, and continued over the next seven summers. It was made on a shoe-string budget of around $5000, greatly contrasting with the original's $18 million budget. It was shot out of sequence, so due to its long filming period many actors randomly appear at different ages throughout the course of the film. As Raiders of the Lost Ark was not available on any home media format when they began filming, they were forced to collect all kinds of material about the film, including magazine articles, photographs, and even an illicit recording of the film's audio captured during a re-release screening of the original film in 1982.

It had terrible pop music and suffered from meddling late in production to make it darker. But the animation is good and the setting is unique.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom commits grand larceny on the second half of Gunga Din. I'm surprised I can't find a detailed webpage with vid/pics of all the stolen elements.
I hoped this video would do the job, but instead it's a scolding commentary about "problematic" aspects of these two films. No fun allowed!

Anyway, check out Gunga Din. It starts off as a war movie with the British Army stomping around India for some unknown reason. Cary Grant has a cockney accent that comes and goes. Halfway through, the genre kind of flips to adventure when they find a gold palace and Kali and a snakepit and the bald Indian bad guy.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. You really don't know where it's going and has decent pacing once you're halfway through.

Adventure films have been replaced by action films. That's why this thread is full of old recommendations -- the adventure genre fell out of fashion many years ago. However there was a major release in 2017 that revived the old genre...

Operation condor was really good if it's the one I remember. Jackie is there trying to get through some stone door I think. Something about a scorpion in the desert.
What's the macgyver actor made for TV movie about the scepter. That one was good when there wasn't internet and you had to watch what was available on Tv.

The main character "Frank Buck" was actually a real person.
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0118353/
<Frank Howard Buck (March 17, 1884 – March 25, 1950) was an American hunter, animal collector, and author, as well as a film actor, director, and producer. Beginning in the 1910s he made many expeditions into Asia for the purpose of hunting and collecting exotic animals, bringing over 100,000 live specimens back to the United States and elsewhere for zoos and circuses and earning a reputation as an adventurer. He co-authored seven books chronicling or based on his expeditions, beginning with 1930's Bring 'Em Back Alive, which became a bestseller. Between 1932 and 1943 he starred in seven adventure films based on his exploits, most of which featured staged "fights to the death" with various wild beasts.

I like this longform article regarding Gunga Din vs. Indian Jones.
https://www.newenglishreview.org/custpage.cfm?sec_id=4171
The author says Gunga Din is the best adventure movie ever made. I disagree on that point, but I'm not sure what I would choose instead. Maybe something like Die Niebelungen if that qualifies.
And he is more negative on Indiana Jones than I am, but it's fun to read anyway.
