What are your favorite giallos? What should I watch, other than Argento and Bava's well known films?

I've seen a few. Since giallo is all about the music and visuals, I'd recommend anything scored by Morricone or filmed by Storaro. Particularly Cosa avete fatto a solange, Black Belly of the Tarantula, The Fifth Cord and Le orme.

Fulci's Sette note in nero is essential too IMO.

Edwige Fenech is a popular giallo actress but her films left me a little disappointed for whatever reason. Lo strano vizio della Signora Wardh is probably the first thing to watch from her.

A couple others worth a look are Delirio caldo (more of a sexy movie) and Death Lays an Egg (poultry factory madness)

np, I also found this short giallo guide (written in 1992) on my hard drive. I never bothered to look at it before.

Its ratings might be more helpful than IMDB. I already see a few I want to check out like Slaughter Hotel and Knife of Ice

I wouldn't have used imdb ratings for this kind of movies, anyway. I usually browse the trackers and see what screencaps spark my interest or what others recommend.

Saw Sette note in nero yesterday. It was pretty good. Tamer than what I would have expected from Fulci, but it was interesting nonetheless. I liked that it didn't fit the usual giallo narrative of a 3-4 murder set pieces whodunit.

Yeah Fulci is known for gore but that genre doesn't appeal to me very much. His mystery/thrillers are pretty good though. Two other gialli from Fulci are Don't Torture a Duckling and A Lizard in Woman's Skin. There's Una sull'atra too but I remember it as more of an erotic thriller.

> see what screencaps spark my interest

I like that method myself. Tinto Brass made a giallo called Col cuore in gola AKA Deadly Sweet which I downloaded based on the cool screenshots, but I never got around to watching it. It appears to have some great 60s pop art as part of the set design.

Lizard in Woman's Skin was pretty good visually. Don't go into it for the murder mystery.

Check out Helena Cattet and Bruno Forzani's other work, including their shorts. It's worth it, especially their later ones with a bit of a budget.

I also think Four Flies on Grey Velvet was underrated.

Went into Bay of Blood thinking it was giallo but it really was a slasher.

Haven't seen that much else, ive been slacking off in the giallo department but will use suggestions from this thread, thanks.

>will report back when I watch it

...aand I finally did. Some of my random thoughts:

If you like giallo you will like The Editor. It's somewhere between an homage and a giallo itself, so there are a lot of the genre tropes and references that you'd expect. Unlike the Forzani-Cattet neogialli, The Editor has a running thread of humour to keep the film from getting too serious. It's never campy, though. The occasional jokes actually complement the inherent silliness of the giallo plot points.

Pas de la Huerta gets top billing but I think she's a weak link. Her role is small, her makeup is garish, her character is obnoxious.

Most of the other girls are barely-dressed hot blondes. I'm a strong supporter of hot women in film.

I like how The Editor was made in the Middle of Nowhere, Canada.

Oh, one cool element was the post-dubbing of voices, sometimes poorly, just like cheap Italian films. It would have been even better if only the actors in the film-within-a-film were poorly dubbed and every other characters spoke normally.

I have that one downloaded but I still haven't watched it. Have you? It seemed like a good one to choose after you've seen most of the popular titles.

A new article lobs accusations of wrongthink at the giallo genre: misogyny of course, homophobia for negative portrayals of lesbians (as if Italian Catholics take kindly to homewrecking dykes)

https://brightlightsfilm.com/wp-content/cache/all/design-killing-giallo-bava-argento-blood-fetish/

I'm generally unsatisfied when horror films are condemned as misogynistic. It strikes me as lazy and simplistic analysis: "The director kills women... because he hates women!" Deeper in the article I think they stumbled upon a better explanation:

Victims must always be enviable: either beautiful and sexy or rich and swellegant, or all of the above, so the average moviegoer can rejoice in their dismemberment with a clear conscience.

This fits into my personal theory that ghoulish horror directors "kill" gorgeous women as revenge for rejecting them earlier in life. Just look at pictures of some of those directors, what decent girl would date such creeps? If true, this is slightly different (and more complex) than boring old misogyny.

As a curiosity I found a giallo-inspired Japanese pink movie - Zoom In: Rape Apartments (1980). I'm kind of surprised there aren't more Japanese gialli because it seems like the type of thing that would catch on over there.
