Best new films I've watched this year are Blackhat, L'ombre des femmes, Pasolini, Mountains May Depart, and Magic Mike XXL.
As to older films, it'd be very tough to narrow it down, but I guess John Ford's Wagon Master and Philippe Garrel's La cicatrice interieure are certainly among the very best films I've ever seen.

And I haven't seen anything from 2015 either, but this is the time of year when I usually start looking for the "best" releases. I had planned to check these out:
Cemetery of Sadness, Bitter Lake, Love, From What Is Before, Horse Money, Going Clear, World of Tomorrow, Victoria, No No Sleep
Best older films I watched... I will have to think about that a little more. I know I got some good recommendations from here.

I cannot recommend Garrel enough; He is one of the most graceful filmmakers I can think of, and (to paraphrase someone else, not entirely sure who) his films feel as though they were made by angels.
Not a huge fan of Going Clear or World of Tomorrow, but both are worth your time. As to the others, I haven't seen any of them, but I eagerly look forward to them all.

Yeah, I've heard Ford name HGWMV, Fort Apache, Wagon Master, The Sun Shines Bright, and 7 Women as his favorite/his best films. But with Ford, they;re all masterpieces pretty much; he's just the best of the best.

does anyone else think b&w looks kinda weird shot in hd? i noticed it with hard to be a god. it's very crisp compared to the traditional b&w film look.

I know it's in romanian. However, even if I am a native speaker, I usually have troubles following dialogues in romanian films. The sound is bad and the speech is often too fast/rushed. I wish there were more romanian subtitles, just like most english language films have english subtitles.

I noticed the same thing about DVDs made exclusively in France. Not enough of them had French much less English subtitles (at least the ones I wanted to watch).

My favorite so far was Victoria and The Wolf Pack was a close second.
The rest is mostly stuff that I saw and liked but is likely to move down when I see other things coming out this year that I anticipate liking more.

I've seen Bitter Lake. Pretty interesting but not essential.

It gives a history of both Afghanistan and the US/Saudi relationship interspersed with miscellaneous cool footage which was found/shot by a BBC cameraman. Often this footage is only tangentially relevant.
I would have liked more depth (I already knew a lot of this information).
One of the strangest claims Curtis made was that Reagan was the first president to frame the world as good vs. evil, making people believe in this imaginary narrative. Actually that's been happening since Woodrow Wilson if not earlier.

I've watched plenty of movies this year, but few of them actually stuck with me.
I guess Lost River and Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter were alright. As for older movies, I watched Stalker recently, but I couldn't make much sense of it. I'll probably watch it again some time in the future.
Oh, and Le Samouraï was kinda disappointing, I really expected more of it.

I think that the hands down biggest surprise for me this year was Son of Saul. I realize that it's a bit cliche to start talking about a movie by listing just how much it subverted one's expectations, but I honestly didn't think that it was going to be anything other than some generic, run of the mill cannescore that usually fills the holes in my schedule during festivals. And instead I got Nemes pretty much joining people like Lanzmann, Godard or Farocki as one of the few filmmakers actually doing the subject of concentration camps justice, which is even more impressive, since the other three made documentaries or video essays and not actual, narrative films.
There's that famous quote from Adorno saying that it's barbaric to make poetry after Auschwitz, and I think that the film somewhat goes by that idea. Probably the best way of approaching its formal side is just to say that it was generally 'well-done'. It was shot in a fairly aesthetically pleasing way, but never purposefully trying to look pretty, and at the same time never stopping to gloat and attempt to emotionally manipulate the viewer during the numerous incredibly shocking scenes. Ultimately only making them more disturbing because of the hellishly naturalistic and impersonal way in which they were handled, really underlying this theme of how any faintest manifestation of humanity is actually a gigantic liability when you are a part of a death factory.

that subject has been done to death so the film wasn't very high on my radar. especially since it's a drama like you say. now that a couple of people have mentioned it, and given your enthusiasm, I'm interested to watch.
but since I live where no hungarian film has ever been screened I depend on home video (and often downloads) for most foreign releases...
