Let's have a thread specifically for longer content.
I don't watch television series since I'd prefer spend that time on, say, 10 completely different films. But I'm open to watching mini-series, a format situated between regular feature films and TV series. (It's just rare that I actually do it.)
Has /film/ seen any good mini-series (or old serials)? What long films have you seen, did you watch them in one day, and were they worth the time?

Welt am Draht (world on a wire), my man. it's just basically a two part movie, only 3hrs or so total I think, but it was made for television (which I find hard to believe seeing what gets made for television now) so I think it counts. just watch it, don't read anything about it. just rest assured it is good
the director of this (Rainer Werner Fassbinder, great all around) has also made Berlin Alexanderplatz, a 15 hr film divided up, which is supposed to be great, but I haven't seen it

I love everything about World on a Wire, all the way to the easy glide Fleetwood Mac song during the end credits. Yeah, it's not a very long mini-series but I'd put it near the top of anything made for TV. There was a movie too, The Thirteenth Floor, but it didn't work nearly as well.
I haven't seen Berlin Alexanderplatz either but it's on my hard drive. Interesting that it was filmed at 25 fps. Watching at 24 fps extends the running time by a whole 35 minutes…

I would like to recommend a British tv series from the 1985. It's called Edge of Darkness and is only 6 episodes long. It's great if youre into spy/detective shows

Steven King's The Stand? I didn't like that one either. I'd say don't bother going back.
I think Steven King made a mini-series of his vision of The Shining. I'd almost like to watch it to see how it falls short of Kubrick's movie.
Because I've only seen part of it, I'll give a cautious recommendation for the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce. The source material seems pretty solid (based on the noir film). The miniseries does a nice job with period details and Todd Haynes excels at directing women's stories.

My favorites are Show Me a Hero and Generation Kill. David is great writer, and this is how I feel that most things historical should be explored and portrayed.
GK is very intimate and close portrayal of the Iraq invasion, small in scope and SMaH is a well-balanced with larger and smaller scope (the political process and the life of Nicky)
Most of the time when I watch a movie depicting something out of the history books I keep thinking how much better it'd be as a more fleshed out miniseries.

I recommend not watching the highly acclaimed HBO miniseries Angels in America. The first episode demonstrates a lot of potential...but the rest of it drags on interminably with no payoff.
The series is adapted from an extremely long play. Not many people can write seven solid hours of interesting, compelling dialogue. Eventually you get sick of hearing the writer's self-indulgent pontification. I know I did.

I finished the first adaptation of Batman (1943) -- pretty goofy but it grows on you. The 1960s TV series is a parody of the 1940s versions.
It's not for binge watching because it's so damn formulaic.
Batman initiates about two fistfights every day, usually outnumbered 2:1. He could just call the cops but what fun is that? So he gets a sound thrashing and narrowly escapes death, until next time.
There's no gadgets or Batmobile, none of the well-known villains. But it's still kinda fun.

Everyone seems to like Raoul Ruiz on /film/ (with good reason). One of his last films was a 4.5 hour historical epic cut into segments for broadcast on television.
It's probably Ruiz's most commercial project, so his presence isn't always as obvious as in his other films. But there's still plenty to enjoy about it. The opulent period costumes recall Barry Lyndon, the extended storytelling sequences recall The Saragossa Manuscript, and the frequent deep focus shots recall Gregg Toland.
It's somewhat gratifying that Ruiz won many film awards for for Mysteries of Lisbon. He spent much of his career ignored by mainstream viewers so at least he got brief recognition at the end. He was working on a similar type of project when he died.

Just finished watching this today. Really stellar acting across the board (though I think John Hurt and Derek Jacobi deserve special mention). It really blows recent TV shows about Machiavellian politics (Game of Thrones, House of Cards US) out of the water.
Such a shame the BBC doesn't release quality television like this and The Singing Detective anymore.
