Has there ever been a fantasy film outside of the Fellowship of the Ring that one could consider cinematic?
One could argue for Ridely Scotts Legend but it doesn't have the same epic scale as FotR.

What do you mean by cinematic? If you're asking about well-made fantasy epics I can think of some examples (depending on your criteria for "epic").
Someone mentioned Jean-Jacques Annaud recently. I suggest watching his 1981 Paleolithic film Quest for Fire.
The silent movie thread has a poster for Thief of Bagdad which I'd highly recommend too.
Ray Harryhausen contributed his trademark stop-motion effects for a lot of mythic tales like Jason and the Argonauts.

Thanks for the great post! It's been a long time since I've seen all those movies but I'll definitely go and check them out again.
Have you seen the documentary about Harryhausen? I had no idea that this guy was so influential.

No I haven't, would you recommend it? I think I want to watch a few more of his best films first.

I'd definitely recommend it. I sort of knew who he was before watching but had no clue on how many modern artists we're inspired by his works.
It's pretty great if your a fan of old school special effects. And by old school, I mean claymation.

Im not sure what you mean by cinematic, do they need to be violent?
You could try faust '26, desmond davis, h juran, maybe even hessler?
i agree with the anon suggesting harryhausen, on a related note could fantastic mr fox be considered harryhausen like?
also check out arnold frank since his pioneer of mountain films in my opinion was influential in many harryhausen scenes.

The Nibelungs, by Fritz Lang. Two parts, for a total of five hours. The script is quite flawed, but the epic scope and fantasy is there, and it's all pretty impressive for 1924.

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play. I saw this recommended in another thread. It blends animation and live action.
Quite amazing and worth seeing

Conan the Barbarian anyone?
This film is simply beautiful to look at, the soundtrack is one of my all-time favourites, the cast is stellar for what it is, the sets are breathtaking, and the effects still hold up in my experience.

When I saw it I was chuckling at Arnie's acting and didn't take it very seriously. But I only see positive posts about it on 8chan. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Arnold isn’t a great actor, but he does OK, because he picks is roles well, and he has a certain screen presence his his more serious roles.
I think his accent is part of the reason some can’t take him seriously – especially in his earlier films. He doesn’t talk too much in ‘Conan’ though, and he is at his best when his roles are more quiet, like in ‘The Terminator’.
I think he did a great job in ‘Conan’, and I can’t see anyone else take on that role after him.

>I can’t see anyone else take on that role after him.
That's true. It would have been much worse without him.
I was going to say the Conan must have spawned the wave of similar types of movies and TV shows in the early 80s, but I see there was already a "Thundarr the Barbarian" cartoon on TV a couple years earlier.

The chica/blonde valkyria/slag is the worst part of that movie, in my opinion. She didn't even bother cutting her fingernails before getting in front of the camera(in certain scenes)!
But, yeah apart from that I agree.
A shame that so few (English language)films have guts like Milius' did.
On a minor tangent; does anyone else think we're in for another Hollywood crash and subsequent creative revival such as we saw in the 1960s & '70s?

Who knows? Hollywood is doubling down on its shitty movies and business decisions. Besides, there are still winners who make shit, just look at IT and Marvel.

In the same vein Dragonslayer is definitely worth checking out.
Son of the White Mare also could fit in here but is animated.

It's a rubbish film, but the dragons in it were very well done, as far as I can remember. Very smooth and believable motion(makes it worth an uncommited evening to see).
