What's the best decade of film and why is it the 60's?

hard to say really, i can only speak to my own biases.
i used to prefer the 60s and 70s, but currently my favorite period is probably the 40s. maybe i've just gotten more cynical, which often comes up in the postwar era.
historians who watch loads of films seem to prefer even earlier. i know one guy who says the nickelodeon era is his favorite, which seems crazy…but i admittedly haven't seen much of anything from that period.

Your friend sounds kinda nuts, but I'd be interested in hearing why he prefers the 1900's era.
I tend to find pre 60's movies (especially Hollywood ones) a lot more formulaic, given the heavy censorship and restrictions of the time. I'm sure my mind will change over that sooner or later though. Disregarding the classics, I haven't really watched a lot of 40's movies.

I don't think I will ever understand that Parajanov hype.

heh, it's actually someone with a film podcast
i don't know if he likes the extreme raw aspect of very early stuff, or he's gotten bored with "normal" cinema so much that he needs to go off the wayside to maintain a sense of novelty.
perhaps like me he has a sort of nostalgia for an unknown (and slightly imaginary) past that comes out of watching the films of a particular era.

The 60's really were a period of transformative change for cinema. Studio excess began to collapse under it's own weight. Cameras became smaller and cheaper, giving rise to independent and documentary filmmaking. The Hayes Code finally bit the dust, allowing for more honesty on screen. Culturally, just look how things like rock music evolved from 1960 to 1970. Throw in all the political chaos of the 1960's and it's truly a remarkable decade.

Can you name some of your faves? I have not seen very many great films made post-2010, but I'm sure they exist

that's an odd way of spelling 80s

That's pretty good stuff (I haven't seen all of them) but I would not rank them higher than the best 60s films

I think OP's list of 12 is stronger overall even though Breathless isn't that great and there are others that could be included like The Leopard and Woman in the Dunes

A lot of trash there.

I'd put Stray Dogs as the best film of the decade so far.

Apples and Oranges. Personally only films I really like from OP's picture are Harakiri and TCOP. I am a big Bergman fan but I don't really love Persona, funny.

Agreed. Logarithmic exposure response, grain, and photochemical process. Digital is fucking bland and flat. Digital lowers minimum production values, floods the market lots of sub-tier shit.

Corollary is that it also allows those gifted yet not connected to make their films too

There's an old saying:

Great Minds Discuss Ideas

Average Minds Discuss Events

Small Minds Discuss People

If the trend in that comment is accurate, it indicates a regression from films about ideas to films about people.

I don't think that quote applies here.

>Small Minds Discuss People

I believe this means that weak or stupid people gossip often as they don't really have any ideas of their own to share with others.

I still don't see how this is bad.

Most good films deal with emotions and have characters who are complex. Also many films discussed on /film/ go against mainstream trends.

really? I usually like movies with hacking motives but i resent that movie for being so slow and boring. Was there really any deeper motives and themes in it?
