Can't believe Andrej Zulawski hasn't been recommended. He hit the ceiling on hyperanarchic subversion. I'm confident no director has surpassed him in that respect, you kind of lose a taste for base extremity in other movies knowing he's not only taken it so much further, but also explored chaos with lot more narrative impact, as well as sheer physical force in a direction similar to carax with denis lavant's acrobatics
Possession is his most accessible and popular but for the same reason that it offers less than l'amour braque - whose main character is an incomprehensible constantly mobile clumsy autist - or On The Silver Globe - just look it up the whole thing is frankly fucking nuts - also what makes it less appealing than them: its couched in the horror genre.
Ignore whatever you might have heard about Possession from dumb wannabe net moguls cashing in on the trendy new cult hit in the last few years, besides his movies being fucking nuts, by the way. There's a lot more to it than base relationship metaphors, political symbolism and body horror which seems to be the only thing YT reviewers have the capacity to recognize in any movie. It's not some one-off oddity, Zulawski's a proper good director. L'amour braque takes on a destruction of heist similar to Possession's of psychological horror but does it with more pervasive self-annihilation. I think it's his best overall and just as fine a place to start, but none of his are really perfect.

Watch Fruits of Passion, later by the same director. Amps it up, if you couldn't tell with Klaus Kinski in the lead. Very grateful to have gotten to see it screened last summer

also, I'll add to the thread. these are sort of obvious but Luis Bunuel's stuff (I'm thinking primarily L'Age D'Or but I know lots of his stuff is valid) fits in well with this thread, though it isn't all especially 'extreme' by today's standards

I think L'amour braque will be harder for the uninitiated to digest. Prolonged chaos accompanying a tidal wave of dialogue can easily be overwhelming for the average person. I'd point them toward Possession and Diabel first. But it definitely embodies this thread.

I notice many Slavic films have scenes with a long table full of many kinds of food. The table has more food than the person could eat (or realistically prepare). Daisies has the scene indoors, but The table is often outside on grass. It brings with it a feeling of disarray, excess, gluttony. It makes me think of a medieval feast. Do you know what I'm talking about? I wonder where this idea comes from. Do film scholars have anything to say about it? From now on l will note examples when I see them.
An inverse of the outdoor table is the indoor farm/forest animals. Goats, chickens, birds roam free in someone's house. The characters usually ignore the animals. Again this provides a feeling of disorder and makes any scene more interesting.

I think that pdf is not so good because it comes from html rather than a scan of the pages. It's like reading a 1990s website. While it's better than nothing, it needs an upgrade.
The actual book was surprisingly rare last I checked. Hardcover pretty expensive. It's not the greatest writing in the world, and the descriptions of each film are rather brief. But I'd still like to find a physical copy in good condition. It's a significant exploration of films outside the mainstream.

This thread reminded me of the Viennese Actionists. Their performance art is rather distasteful and I could only stand to watch for a few minutes when I first heard of them. My memory is that naked people were flopping around slapping chicken meat on themselves.
Maybe I'd feel differently about watching this garbage now, who knows.
I remembered the name Otto Muhl, so I decided to read about the man. Wikipedia says, "Otto Muehl (16 June 1925 – 26 May 2013) was an Austrian sex offender and artist, who was known as one of the co-founders as well as a main participant of Viennese Actionism and for founding the Friedrichshof Commune." Sounds like a class act.
