Thoughts on this film? I enjoyed it, and thought it was both enjoyable to watch and also had deeper storytelling elements that I enjoyed. I thought the ending was powerful, and I appreciated that some of the climbing was done actually on a mountain (I think).

Haven't seen it, I do like the early German "bergfilms" directed by Arnold Fanck. They were basically extreme alpine documentaries with a story tacked on.

So is this the thread where we talk about mountain movies? I like hiking so I have a soft spot for these.
I'm currently fascinated by Everest after watching the new docudrama about the 1996 expedition (don't read about it). I liked the movie even though it's not perfect. Characters were one-dimensional despite being based on real people. Also the CGI was way out of place, undermining any attempt to portray the extreme indifference and absolute vastness of nature.
But the story was very compelling. So next I saw the PBS documentary about the same events called Storm Over Everest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ5olbdXd10
Then I rounded it out with the 1924 documentary The Epic of Everest which follows British explorers Mallory and Irvine as they attempt to summit for the first time. It's one of first great mountain films.

Breddy good documentary/adventure movie. I'd give it 7.5/10. Two of the climbers photographed their ascent; one of them directed the film itself. So you have an insider perspective rather than hyped up drama.
