So did any of you guys get to see Napoleon when it played in San Francisco or London?
Seems like it would have been an amazing experience. I've never even seen a silent film with a live orchestra. I'm holding off watching this film just in case I get the chance to attend one of these screenings someday.

Each year we have a small silent cinema festival here, but it's nothing quite as flashy as what you linked, usually just a small ensemble or a sinfonietta rather than a full blown orchestra playing alongside the film, it's nothing quite as incredible as you would imagine, you mostly go for the atmosphere because the screening room gets filled with old people in fancy clothes.

I don't know all the details. I think Coppola holds rights to the film, but Brownlow has been researching and assembling it throughout his life. I think there's some conflict regarding how it can be presented?
Sadly I don't think there will be a bluray release of this new version. Even then, the stunning effect of the finale triptych would be lost when viewed on a flat screen.

There are a few videos on that site discussing the new version…I wish I understood more of what they was saying.

What I would pay just to see Napoleon with a live orchestra play in my city.
It is literally the one film that I have been avoiding to see just for the day to come where I can experience it the way it should be.

In the culmination of a 50-year project, Academy Award-winning film historian Kevin Brownlow and the BFI National Archive have completed a new digitally restored version of Abel Gance’s cinematic triumph. From Autumn 2016, for the first time ever, audiences across the UK will be able to experience this extraordinary cinematic masterpiece with Carl Davis’s magnificent score when the film goes on theatrical release in UK cinemas and is available on BFI DVD/Blu-ray and BFI Player.
