Hey, /film/, thought I would start a thread on independent film makers that browse here. Just finished my fantasy film two years in the making, working on some final music selections (very minimalist).

We wanted to make a basic fantasy film that is more like Conan The Barbarian and Dark Souls, with some cinematography similar to what you would see in Samurai Jack at times. 13th Warrior was also a big inspiration. The plot isn't complicated, but it is more about the shots and the atmosphere of the film. We shot this over the course of two years for about 5000.

The film is called Spriggan. Looking to release it in about a week or so to Amazon, etc. Take it to some festivals as well.

What are some projects you are working on, or roadblocks that you are running into making your film?

Here are a few stills.

Cool, nice job. Do you have a trailer yet? It would be nice to get a better idea of what this film is like.

How do you get your films on the major streaming sites? What kinds of festivals are you looking at?

 No.14074

>>14073

Thanks, I appreciate the compliment. We have character/atmospheric trailers. We'll cut a slightly more meaty one for the streaming sites that require them, but otherwise I'm not very fond of trailers that give away too much.

As far as getting them on streaming sites, Amazon simply has technical requirements, fairly easy to get on. Other sites like Hulu and Netflix you have to have a distributor or pitch for. Hulu we will most likely be getting on, but Netflix will probably not happen. The film doesn't fit their audience imo.

I'm looking at mid-tier festivals for now. Several in Amsterdam (Imagine for example), FilmQuest, Comic Con, etc. No point in submitting to Sundance, Tribecca, or Cannes; again, it doesn't fit the audience. There are several national film festivals that have large viewings; Philly has one that is somewhat famous for example for example.

They really try to play gatekeepers, but now is probably the best time to get into film if you can commit to the work load and vision, since you can get your work on atleast one major platform without too much hassle. On a side note, make sure to have someone doing captioning. That is a pain in the ass if you aren't going to pay for it.

Speaking of costs, I'm curious how much will it cost to submit to these festivals? Maybe 1k total? And how much money do you make from Amazon/Hulu?

 No.14103

Not really sure I understand your question. Are you asking how much of the two years was spent directly working on the film?

>>14092

You make more off physical (people still buy) and the dividends on Amazon/Hulu are fairly low. The main point is to shop it around at festivals, you get picked up, and win. Which is how you really make money on the independent side of things.

But yes, around 1k if you were submitting to every mid-tier festival. Really not that expensive. Sundance is $75 for example (won't be submitting there, but as a reference).

What does that even mean? You can download it straight off from youtube in 1080p quite easily and then share it on tpb/here/wherever. It depends only on that if he wants to share master or more transparent version than the YT one and let others to make it somewhat immortal. It will get there anyway.

I don't know if amazon/hulu even offer downloads and in what quality, but the industry standard is around 5000 Kbps when 1080p, and that's not enough even if encoded properly in hevc, and only god knows how they encode shit.

Anyway, I'm just downloading it. Would eventually buy physical copy if good, but shipping overseas is still very costly.

Did you film most of Spriggan in chronological order? A friend and I got that impression while watching it yesterday because the camerawork gets much better as the film goes along. Seeing two years of growth in slightly over an hour was a neat experience as Spriggan went from a couple friends fucking around in the woods to something bordering on a good film.

It looks like you guys had a lot of fun and I hope you make more films in the future. With a little more practice and better audio, you guys could make some good shit. Also, please store your armor properly. The knight's helmet gets rustier every scene.

Wow thank you so much. We did film it chronologically, as I took advice from Refn and a few others that advised doing so. Better to have a strong finish than a beginning is what they said. Valhalla Rising was big inspiration for me doing that.

The only exception to this actually is the Spriggan scene itself; that was shot in the middle but otherwise everything else was done in order. Thanks for the love, we are going to try and make more for sure <3

Made a generic trailer for the Amazon/streaming services. We got lucky and the Frazetta family (Frank Frazetta if for some reason you are not familiar) watched the film and liked it. I saw another indie fantasy film doing well, called The Headhunter, but it is shot in a much more standard way (colors are that Nolan Blue that is ever so popular). We may end up getting some non-pozzed fantasy films out of this generation after all.

thanks man...that means a lot. im not rich or anything (still on chicken broccoli and ramen lol) but i do feel better having made it. if you are looking to do film specifically, i recommend Werner Herzog's master class (torrent it if you can find it online) and just study film.

Don't fall for arthouse memes, etc. While they can be certainly good, nowadays it is easy to produce and copy. Make something that, if you don't make a dime off of it, you can be proud of. We used our local surroundings after going deep in the woods. I used a Panasonic G7 (cheap, water resistant and excellent color grading. Also 4K 24fps so when you bring it down to 1080 it looks xtra gud and you can really crop and zoom in to your heart's content).

It took me two years to make and six months for achieve distribution. I haven't put any marketing into it yet (many shekels needed). But you can do it. It is just very time consuming and engaging. But nothing else like it.

if you (or anyone on here) have questions or want help just let me know. I'm no expert but if you're on this board we probably have similar tastes in the long-run.

again, thx, means a lot to hear that it has motivated others.

First start actually shooting, something, experiment, try, don't watch retarded video classes, there's nothing more corrupting, watching films should have given you very much already, if you are more greekish than roman, and they are corrupting as well.. Tap into photography too, if you haven't yet. Start with fullscreen, no landscapes, no "nature", focus on human. Read the books/watch videos directly on shooting either after you made something you didn't burn or delete afterwards, or simultaneously, Sadoul isn't bad for starters I guess, read theatre theory too, which is way more fun. Always make sure you screen it to somebody, even if it's only small number of people. Get into the current film culture your city has, if you live in a city.

Get friends, get acquaintances, get girlfriend, get boyfriend, if you have only few or none, well, we are on chan haha.

but tbh if this served you as "motivation" then don't, if you haven't read any theory while being interested in consuming then don't, doubly so

Tbh just looked up some, they are all snake oil, as americans say, for retards from some, suprise suprise, other retards, predominantly americans, as expected. Inherently. It's like those so-popular "books for dummies" or "history of philosophy in 10,000 words". And recommended herzog, lol, herzog hardly is competetent enough to teach anybody about how to make films.

You, fellow brazilian, shit on this board for not writing pages-long essayes and having small userbase not interested in talking with people you can't know while contributing nothing yourself, and then you show us all how much a redditor you are? Everyone doez it differently. Reading theory is good, but too much and you are going to wind up like a Wes Anderson or Jew Jew Abrams mimicking others. Also, photography is NOT a good place to start; it teaches you singular framing instead of objects moving and being displaced. All I'm going to say on the subject, as again, everyone has a different approach. Herzog is also an excellent source, watch Aguirre and study what he does with very little in terms of cast and surroundings. If you don't like his films, that is fine. But that doesn't change that they are well done and unique to him. I agree though that a lot of americans into film are hacks, mostly because they either are Michael Bay or (worse) they fellate French/soy films and try to emulate it too much to the point where it is elementary and hollow. Result of over-research and not developing a uniqye taste and style.

The one anon saying have outside influences and activities is 100% spot on though. It is important to have these, especially if you are working on a long term project.

Either way, I hope all of you pick up the camera and make a go at it. Brazil has beautiful environments and a lot of potential.

agree, but is still good because you capture, sure, it's different but if he didn't pick any interest in shooting yet but latent, this is certainly a good place to start, as filmmaker you are tapping probably into all arts there are anyway and this is the closest one I know of, in the end even if it teaches him bad things or corrupts him even more he'll at least either get to know the difference, pick up new "hobby" or, most importantly, start to desire shooting. At least I felt the last way, you want the eternal to live. I'll just say that photography has a lot useful purposes for the act of filmmaking, but I'm no Cicero, sorry.

>everyone has a different approach

yes

>but too much and you are going to wind up

Depends on the character. If you have no, say, individualistic tendencies it's very, very easy to get brainwashed by yourself, when the creative spirit is stronger than the critic or if you have none critic spirit too. One of the reasons why every artist should be critique first, his whole life.

almost 50 years ago, if said lecture(s) are like 10 years old it's shit, he made so much trash since and doubt he remembers it well, otherwise sure, great, but it still greatly depends on you and your surroundings and the exploration of, say, basics is something that's really nice; knowing can be restraint, one that's hard to overcome too.

I had my eyes on that for sometime now, besides the other classes from masterclass.com. But part of me also thinks like the other anon and wants to experiment first.

It's not that I just taken up interest after seeing this thread, but that up to this point in my life I had other worries, so I couldn't do much besides watching films. But right now (and I'm still only 24yo) I have the time and stability to start.

I'm currently going to a video workshop and learning more about operating cameras (specially DSLR), so by next month I hope to know which equipment to buy, but I will definitely add the G7 to the possibilities list. I also didn't try to learn only by myself because I agree with the "get friends" advice. I do have a few friends, but I come from a STEM background, so they don't seem very interested in my film ambitions...

Maybe everyone here knows about him, but another big inspiration for me is Shane Carruth, famous for Primer and Upstream Color (amazing film also shot on a Panasonic DSLR).

I sincerely hate teaching and teachers. I can't say I lost any respect as I don't know what respect is(I think I don't know skammen as well), but I'm sure to not give a fuck about Lynch anymore. At least he doesn't pretend to be "european".

You remind me of one of my girlfriends though, same background, same inspiration (I'm completely against the notion of, hm, meta-inspirations though, you wanna do it or not, that's it, if you said you want to be painter after reading Гоголь's Портрет or anti-obscurantist revolutionary after reading Маяковский, anti-commercialist after seeing Montparnasse 19, in love after O Padre e a Moça or jew/nazi after Démanty Noci, sane after hearing live Un Autre Chemin Vers L'Ultime, bohemian charlatan after hearing Dvořák or far from safe after hearing Lizst, I'd get you, but not after reading prosaic shit about one's life or seeing his achievments, you do always only for yourself, what others do or did doesn't matter, your inspiration is dream, platonic sensation) which I rooted out first, she had somewhat shit taste too, it wasn't even hard changing it, she liked jodorowsky and vláčil before btw. I still wish vláčil picked something more interesting than shitty bestseller, and this I'm saying as someone who has similar taste as Šalda. Zeyer's Čechův příchod would be perfect and undeniably more challenging, going against his monotonic, shattered hypnotic grain, gaze; something for director who takes the theatric from bergman, some of the fassbinder's rich composition, the assaultive russel tone, fellini's bombastic satyricon production, rohmer's precision and craft and němec's surreal. Perfect as debut, perfect for one who's untainted, for someone who sees only the vox sōlis, Pisarev/Flaubert/young Goethe of filmmaking; it would be שלומית‎ of 20th century. I also wish someone made ephemeral eposes based on Tzara's poems. Éluard's (or my) poems are great too for that, literally me past 20, glad I didn't know him back then, being natural is always the best, you can learn all the forms etc later, but you can't really recreate the ecstatic prisms, the senseless debaucheries, being what others were before, but you.

I don't like Lynch or any of the masterclass.com shit. There is a really old class you can get from Herzog that I found useful in conceptualizing a lot of the process.

Biggest thing I found on set was that our knight/cameraman (I had directing and other duties, would use the camera for any knight or nature scenes that called for it) would understand me well. But try communicating some of these ideas to people who just want to be IN the movie. That is what you are really up against. Conceptually I nailed everything I wanted to in the film minus a few minor caveats that I can execute better in the next fantasy one I do, whenever that is.

Watching and doing were the best teachers for me personally. Lynch and most of the others they tout are hacks, but Herzog you can learn something from even if you don't like his movies. I guess you could say the same about Lynch and all the others, but everything they go over is available in watching their films. If you can't understand it through watching their work and processing it...ur doing it wrong. But like I said, everyone has their own way. It's a learning process and some people learn better one way over another. referring to my previous post, just be careful about whatever you read/watch without being on that set because (myself included) many directors/cinematographers/actors/etc leave out crucial details or intentionally obfuscate things to make it seem more mystical than it was or due to legality.

Either way, lots of people are watching it and the ratio of negative reviews to those watching it completely through is pretty insane. if all they wanted was production value I could easily have done that with another 4k. good to know for fellow anons and myself in the future. funnily, amazon told me they could care less about reviews; as long as people are watching it on a regular basis, "then you did something right".
