 No.11115 [Last50 Posts]

I thought this might be a good idea so that we don't crowd the catalog and that threads of a higher quality can remain more accessible for longer. I'll start... and I apologize because I know how vague this is going to be. A couple months back (and I think it was on this board) I saw a recommendation for a French film that was made in the last five years. It's most obvious characteristic was the intense, unusual camerawork; holding on strange angles and shaking violently at times. I saw a scene and all I remember is that it took place in the woods, with two characters maybe? That's all I have...

I can't find the name of a film I saw discussed here a year or two ago. I think it was recent, perhaps post-2010, it involved dwarves, was set in some kind of a desert and I remember something about nuclear energy being mentioned.

I tried searching the board but nothing jumps out with dwarves / desert / nuclear. I thought it could be Visitor to a Museum but that is from 1989.

Finally seized time from studies to do stuff, been wanting to rip some flicks but i long forgot the best tools and processes to do so from a post around here somewhere i couldn't find

Questions would be: what's the best way to rip a DVD in excellent quality but not with a (very) bloated file size? maybe in .mkv?

And what's a good program (if it exists) that facilitates subtitle making?

You can make good rips with MeGui or Handbrake. It's best if you follow a tutorial the first time.

There is a good MeGui Beginner's Guide on KG: https://forum.karagarga.in/index.php?showtopic=33683

Handbrake isn't as good as MeGui, but people often use the Handjob Guide to rip.

I don't know if either of these guides are on the open web, unfortunately. I can try to repost some of it here if you are interested.

As for subtitles, are you trying to make subtitles from scratch? Or do you want to translate existing subs?

There is a program that helps generate subtitle timings from the movie's audio. I don't remember the name of it but I can look it up if you need that.

For translating I have used Notepad++. I open 2 files in a split screen - one side for the old subs and the other side for the new. To adjust timings and linebreaks I use Subtitle Workshop.

Seems i found a couple of tutorials for MeGui, going to use both wares for a test run

>are you trying to make subtitles from scratch?

Yes, didn't find any for some of these movies so i'm going to make them. I often modify subtitles in Notepad but it seems highly tedious to do them from 0 due to the precise timings often needed, especially in verbose films.

Gonna download Subtitle Workshop, if you find that one program that generates approximate timings it would be highly appreciated, i only seem to find cheap bundleware around.

Thanks a lot, also where did the share thread go? i think i saw the original ripping posts there, one sounding very similar to yours.

What are you subtitling by the way?

I found that other subtitling program: http://www.visualsubsync.org/

A guide to help get started: http://www.visualsubsync.org/tutorials/making-transcript

And some comments about the program and best practices:

__________

Since I've moved over to Visualsubsync, it has greatly speeded up my subbing process and I would recommend that anyone still using Subtitle Workshop download it and give it a go (at least for timings).

VSS makes a WAV file of the audio with graph and you use this as a guide to overlay the timings with the mouse. There is usually a spike in the graph when the dialogue starts so it's easy to see where. Lengthening or shortening can be done by just clicking on the start/end line and dragging it to where you want.

Set up some shortcuts/hotkeys for the common functions (play, play to end, pause, stop, insert sub and scroll WAV) and you can use the mouse with one hand whilst using the function keys with the other to speed things up.

Trying to subtitle in english some local flicks that may be worth something for a couple of these directors' fans

But now that you asked, i searched again and actually some of these do have subtitles around, along with rips in HMB's blog.

But the ones i didn't find in the open with good quality are: 1976's El Apando ("The Heist") by Felipe Cazals, a prison movie

and 1970's Deuda de Muerte (Death Debt), which is not great but it's emblematic in local cinema, its subsequent influence can be considered a factor in the downfall of the local industry.

The other ones that can be found were Luis Alcoriza's 1963 Tiburoneros & 1965 Tarahumara, and Roberto Gavaldon's 1946 La Otra & 1964 El Gallo de Oro

Thanks a lot for your help, will see if i upload the links around here somewhere

I looked around for those films and I don't see subtitles for either of them. El Apando looks like an interesting one. There's a subtitling bounty on Karagarga but no finished product.

Deuda de Muerte seems to have a lot of alternate titles, even in Spanish: El tunco Maclovio, El sabor de la venganza...

Someone added a custom English dub track to the existing fullscreen DVD of that one. I also found a guy who has a French VHS with the full cinemascope aspect ratio. But, he does not have the equipment to capture the film.

Isn't a 42 pot a big one? And Cazals was a top gun in his days, wonder why nobody has been up to the task, even the english title is strange, Apando is slang for Dirty Cell, an illegal punishment cell for inmates. Haven't seen it yet, the director was known for being a Costa-Gavras workalike, and i don't fancy our local brand of leftism.

Deuda de Muerte was a very liked movie round here, it's basically a half-assed spaguetti western (the elusive taco western) produced by a jew made in the northern states with a couple of northern actors, with quotable dialogue among some (local denizens, shooting and cowboys were catnip for many those days). Long story short, because i wrote too much again, the producers and one of the actors started the trend of cheap action movies based on Dirty Harry/Death Wish and obscenely flooded the market, didn't help many accomplished workers and directors, mainly spaniards, got away.

Hence a big factor in the death of the "golden era" of mexican cinema in the early 70's, you either had a shitty low-budget action flick with a Bronson-esque lead sponsored by the lead himself or a highly liberal student movie made by subversive jews.

Guess i will throw you the subtitles so you can grab the bounty, seems to juicy to pass. Also i didn't even knew Deuda de Muerte had an italian release or even a VHS issue, let alone a premium french one. The plot had potential but badly paced, the movie itself is trash if not for the interesting leads.

Nah, that wouldn't be right. And it's probably against the rules too. You could probably join the site and claim it yourself, unless you aren't interested.

42GB is decent, a bit on the smaller side. The largest overall bounty is 2205GB for Magino Village: A Tale (1987). There aren't many Japanese subbers to claim it. Spanish subtitle requests get filled more often. Tizoc (1957) got to 500GB before it was filled. The largest unfilled Spanish bounty is currently around 125GB.

I don't know about Adult Edition. That's just a picture I found.

Looking again, the high bounty on Tizoc was from one person pledging 485GB. And the subbing isn't complete yet. One person transcribed all the Spanish dialogue and now someone else is translating to English.

They are really wasting their time if DVD subtitles exist. The rip needs an upgrade too - resolution 496x368.

>first i need to actually finish it.

Hi /film/, I'm looking for the title of something I briefly saw on TV a few years ago.

It was a British comedy on an HD channel, in color. I would guess that it was made in the late 1960s. The scene was a butler taking a couple (I think) upstairs to a room in a large house where they would be sleeping. I got the impression that the film was a spoof of a murder mystery / whodunnit / 10 little nignogs. I think there were other guests coming to the house too. The dialogue was very dry and witty.

Any ideas?

What about Othello?

Somehow I've only seen Welles in a 1953 TV version of King Lear. It was performed live, without an audience I think. They cut a lot from the play due to time constraints. Even though they claimed to be getting to the essence of the play, I don't think it worked so well.

I just watched the introduction again (it looks very shitty on youtube). This stood out to me...

Our version of King Lear runs about 73 minutes. And Peter Brook said that even if he had 3 hours, it would still run 73 minutes.

...because in 1971 Peter Brook directed King Lear again. It ran about 140 minutes.

Is TCM Select really this limited? Only 30 titles, most very familiar.

https://www.filmstruck.com/us/watch/bundle/1520000619

I thought Filmstruck had titles from the Warner Archive too, but I don't see it mentioned on their site.

Last I checked Netflix has fewer classic films than just a few years ago.

I don't know of anything else besides TCM the channel. It's pretty good but I don't have cable anymore.

You could try torrents. It's not as convenient as streaming but I guess it's the only way to see certain films. There was an open signup for Retroflix linked down the page. ILoveClassics is another site that focuses on classic films, but I think you have to be invited. I suspect those two aren't as good as more comprehensive sites, but maybe they are a starting point.

No its not about gold or the fake moon landing but a more surface level thing.

Is it possible the entire crux of the film is that Jack has the Shining as well as Danny?

I'm not usually one for theorising films like a crackpot but on rewatch it feels like that was something if not intentionally there certainly fits with the dichotomy between the father and son.

As a side note: isn't it strange how so many people who are drawn to exploitation cinema are so easily offended? Like all these folks on letterbox being outraged by "Brawl in Cell Block 99" while claiming to love Fulci and the original Deathwish films. I've been thinking of starting a film forum with rules in place to ban political discussion, unless the nature of the film itself is political. I don't know though, /film/ and private trackers seem to provide the discussion I'm looking for.

Well there's definitely a difference between "this is the political situation behind Battle of Algiers" and "I think women have it hard in 2018 and so this movie from the 70s about stabbing women is a bad movie." Too many critics/people judge films at least in part on how closely they match their own personal modern values. Is "subjective" vs "objective" filmmaking a commonly accepted dichotomy among professionals?

I'm going to make my own thread with webms that show two versions of a scene (one more objective and one more subjective) if I ever get around to making them, but i'm just curious how "official" the idea is.

How are you using those terms?

Are you talking about a subjective method of storytelling - for example a character's POV

or the directer imposing his subjective viewpoint on the project - for example a documentary that is not neutral

or something else?

>Are you talking about a subjective method of storytelling - for example a character's POV

This one.

For example, there's a scene in Attack of The Clones where the main character's mother dies in his arms. Immediately after she dies we have a close up on the main character's face, showing us his pain. We then cut to a wider shot of him still holding his dead mother where he closes her eyes and strokes her neck, before cutting back to a close up where we see rage on his face as he raises his head.

BUT

There is a fan edit that adds a digital zoom out to the wide shot I mentioned above (in order to "feel Anakin's helplessness") and then adds a digital zoom in to the rage-faced close up (to "feel his anger").

The dilemma for me is that while the fan edit is nice, George Lucas used a similar digital zoom out on a similar "person cradles dead person" shot in a previous film of his, making me think that Lucas had his reasons for NOT making the dead mother scene more "subjective".

Any thoughts?

Yes you can distinguish between different points of view in a scene. I'm not familiar with all film terminology, but the glossary page of filmsite.org uses omniscient POV instead of objective.

subjective point-of-view (POV)

a film in which the narrator has a limited point-of-view regarding the characters, events, action, places, thoughts, conversations, etc.; a subjective camera is a style of filming that allows the viewer to look at events from the POV of either a character or the author, when the camera position is close to the line of sight of the character; contrast to omniscient point-of-view

omniscient point-of-view (POV)

a film in which the narrator knows (and sees) everything occurring in a story, including character thoughts, action, places, conversations, and events; contrast to subjective point-of-view

The preference seems to be to shoot modern B&W films in color. I can't name a recent major production that was actually shot in B&W. Can anyone else?

Given the preference to shoot in color, there must be advantages to that approach. A color film may be easier to manipulate in post. For example, I assume that greenscreen effects are impossible in monochrome.

I'm trying to think of the name of the "final" film to be shot on black and white film. It was a semi-recent low budget US sci-fi. I believe Kodak was in the process of discontinuing the filmstock as they were finishing the film.

It's a great scene, very intense. The best acting? I don't know how to make such a judgement. First, acting is subjective -- what sort of acting is the best acting? Second, it's hard to say a given film is truly #1 in a broad category like acting (or cinematography, soundtrack, etc.) because there are so many other films to consider.

>it reminds me of american obssession with b(and less)-movies or, how do they proudly refer to them, cult movies.

It's exactly what it is about. Giallo is in italy is a type of literature (what is called pulp everywhere else) and giallo movies are basically our equivalent of what americans call grindhouse.

Same exact shit. Italian cinema got ruined by this americanization of movies too.

Btw the B or lesser movie obsession I think it's just a bastardization (muttification if you like) of what Chaiers du cinema, who first "discovered" the value of B movies who were more free to experiment and more "auteurial", said. Americans only weren't able to understand that within the context of classical hollywood it made sense, after it didn't and then Tarantino said it was cool to like them so now here we are.

I enjoy watching these cheesy grindhouse/B movies or less too. With a bit of self irony and a bit of admiration for having put out a movie with little money and little time and still be able to deliver and even try some more out there approach. If I have to watch something entertaining and interesting (for the gimmicks) they deliver and they don't take themself seriously. Still we never had a Seijun Suzuki in Italy so you are really not losing out anything.

Does anyone recognize the poster in the top left of this frame? The still is from Videodrome. Might be made-up for the film (some other posters seen later on seem to be) but it looks legitimate.

weirdly there are actually two releases of suspiria. One where the cinematographer iirc supervised restoration, and another which argento himself signed off on. The former supposedly looks truer to the technicolor esque visual intention, but the latter has a new soundmix (the former has the theatrical 4.0 audio).

Luigi Cozzi has a quote about how in italy it was impossible to make an original movie. "What can I do? In Italy, when you bring a script to a producer, the first question he asks is not 'What is your film like?' but 'What film is your film like?' That's the way it is in Italy. We can only make Zombie II, never Zombi I."[5]

Explain why Bradley Cooper directed a movie about a jew music producer who convinced a good ol country goy to kill himself while his Jew girlfriend parasitically sucked away his life force.

I haven't see this and I don't plan to, but I suppose it was made because it was made before and worked.

What are you guys using to edit text subtitles? I installed Subtitle Workshop but I was wondering if there's something better by now. I forgot how to make the program play mkvs. Just installed a codec pack and it still doesn't work.

Uninstall that deprecated garbage and use Subtitle Edit.

I used to use Subtitle Edit to finalize DVD subs, but I didn't think it was very good for text and syncing.

Anyway my problem was that I downloaded SW version 6.0b because it was at the top of the publisher's webpage.

http://subworkshop.sourceforge.net/

Instead I should have downloaded version 6.0e which works much better.

OK, I'm running Subtitle Edit. It still feels unnatural since I'm more comfortable with the other program. I prefer editing text directly underneath the video. But I'll see if there's upside to its additional features like waveform view. Thanks for mentioning it.

Somebody asked for recommendations for Chechen War and Soviet/Afghan War films, minimal propaganda. I think it's an interesting question but they must have deleted their post.

Sorry for the confusion. I reposted your question because I didn't see it at the time. It must be a technical problem with the site.

I don't know if documentaries are okay, but I started watching this last night. It gives a basic overview of the Soviet relationship with Afghanistan and the events that led to war. Apparently the instability began when the commies took over Afghanistan. The new leadership was more radical than the Soviets, and their socialist ideals were ill suited for the country.
