I really like how converse shoes look like, but they don't seem to survive very long (especially at the heel).
Anything else I might like instead?

Well OP, they don't last very long because the aren't made like they used to.
Converse went bankrupt in the 90s and was bought out by Nike.
Nike then decided to cut corners in construction- resulting in a cheaply-made likeliness of what the shoe used to be, and moved production overseas to Asia.

You can see the comparison here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jowh9XvWMnQ
But you know something? Nike decided to release a new line of "Premium" Converse, the Chuck Taylor 70' which are supposed to be constructed very similarly, or identically to the way they used to back in the 1970s.
Some of the features of the 70s revival is a 2-ply canvas(double what it is today), a stronger rubber formula, increased arch support, thicker insole, and nickel eyelets instead of aluminum.
It isn't made in USA, but they're pretty damn close to being the way they used to be made.
Take a look here:

If you're up for paying $80+, they're actually pretty good OP, i've had mine for 6 months and they're both comfy and still in great shape. The seams aren't even popping like the others.
