What do you use for inspiration when making a character, or do you have examples of what has inspired you to make a character in the past?

I'm finding myself in the rut where I need something "new" and struggling to get the creative juices flowing.

What I'd like is a list of questions to ask myself about the character, so I'm forced to think of every important trait and different aspect in order to answer them. I haven't made the list though. It would be a mix of personality, appearance, backstory and sexual questions. Maybe some for different kinds of scenes for the future too. "What scenes would you like to play or story would you like to tell?" but broken down to be more specific, so that it can get me thinking.

What I do at the moment is think of sexy scenarios I want to play and make a character for them, but that leaves the characters flat until I just force personality into them by play.

What do you judge other people for? Ancillary stuff, not the core interests stuff.

When my character walks into a room I shouldn't be hearing that they *would* see another doing whatever it is they're doing in the room. It's not conditional, unless my character is suddenly struck blind they *do* see them there.

Not "the room *would* be sound proof". The room is soundproof or the room was soundproof depending on the tense being used.

It drives me nuts so I just ask people to avoid the conditional tense and pick either past or present (I'm fine with either and if it keeps people from wouldposting I'll let them pick). At one point I encountered it so much that I put a no for that kind of conditional writing on my character page.

So, what's the "approved" method to discourage short-post types from pinging you while you're looking for RPs?

I've lurked long enough to know that the community seems to look down their nose at anyone who puts things in either their profile/custom kinks, or their adverts, saying they only RP with people able to do long, detailed posts, or that they don't want to be contacted by anyone who does short posts lacking in detail. It's apparently seen as pretentious, and advised that you'll lose good RPers who'll see you as a pompous shitter for doing stuff like that.

Trouble is, I get a lot of short-posters since I stopped doing that. So is there a better way to discourage short-posters from contacting you?

Great resources for basic photoshop skills (cropping out a person from an image, stylish texts and outlines, etc.)? Better if they're specifically focused on some of the most commonly used stuff on inlines. I'm a complete newbie to photoshop, and I spent like an hour or two just trying to crop out a rounded frame and making the corners transparent.

What do you call it when discussing the details and events of a scene with your partner is actually the role playing? For instance, you establish the characters involved, location, and what happenes between them. "Well, we already know what happens, so there's no surprise for either of us. Let's just move on."

Photoshop tutorials are massively popular across the internet to teach you how to use every photoshop tool. Just google things like "photoshop cut out photo" or "photoshop make cool text" and follow instructions.

But more than that, because you are a photoshop newbie, you need to just play around with the program to learn it. Just try all the different tools to see what you can do with them and learn what the settings do. It will help you a LOT to just mess around for a while.

First person has some limitations that mean it won't quite work with every character and story. It requires you to write from your character's perspective, which can complicate things if your character has a bizarre perception of themself or the world. Writing an ugly character who thinks they are hot shit will not work well in first person, for example.

I usually avoid first person because I want the third-person narrative power to contradict what my characters think about themselves and about the world, since my characters are often wrong or have odd opinions. Writing in third person means I can write both about what they think and how things actually are.

Numbers are just numbers rooted more in one-upping than actual thought. You might lose a few zealous size queens by keeping it semi-realistic but in my experience most people really don't care - they pay more attention to how you actually use it in play. Lo and behold, you can play stomach bulging, cervical touching/penetration, and all that other fun semi-realistic stuff whether you're 12 or 8 inches. People into cartoonish hyper will usually use way bigger numbers.

Dick and tit size is inflated in ERP almost all the time, I don't see much reason to get bent out of shape about it (not that you are, just some people can be purists about realistic sizes). I think 12 inches should be the typical max or around that point for maximum as it's not really believable but it's still vaguely plausible. Define the kink (if you must), then write about how how it relates to your character and what the person looking at your profile should expect if they want to do the kink with you.

I just search for potential partners and adjust my approach accordingly. They're generally receptive so I just stick to what works for me. I'm pretty autistic about what I want though, so I don't wander very far outside my comfort zone.

I have a pretty strong feeling most people on F-List will get put out if you switch between dom and sub too much. I was thinking about making her be 'taken aback' by some comments that are made by her, but "snap back" into her more dominant personality after the banter passes over. (Sort of like what you see in the trials). I would say I was hoping to maybe use the paper tiger personality for a scene focused around a mid way role reversal, which feels like something Miu would partake in.

I'm not so much a purist, but I do like doing the characters justice when I make their profiles and play them out. It's gonna be really tough, but you may need to rely on some visual flair through an inline and images to hook someone. It's a dumb solution, but it's a working solution.

Once you've got that, you need to have some depth to your shrinking, setup up an actual reason, a series of events if you will, past "OwO im reel small nao" and, while it's good to show enthusiasm with a potential partner, keep a cool head and have ideas ready to help their character get introduced into it - the all-of-a-sudden bits are so overdone that I'd only expect the other person to suggest it if they're braindead and horny.

I've made shrunken characters or small characters before. My main character used to shapeshift her size between micro and normal, and I used to have a Slime girl that could divide herself into a dozen micro slimes. Not the same as a micro, but they were big things for the character. I figure just make a character that just happens to be tiny, or make it a theme of their character.

Alright, here's a question that's been resurfacing in my mind every other month.

Say you had an idea that involved two very close characters; say, a pair of siblings, or two partners in crime. However, you don't necessarily want to play them both together at all times, and it's possible that they're both a different gender?

Which, in your guys' opinion, is the better option? Making two separate profiles for each character, or one kind-of hub profile for them both?

I want to make my first modern day male profile in over a year. Where should I look for image references? I'm not one of those fags who keeps folders of porn and links them throughout ads and profiles. I role play because I like to write. The text turns me on more than any picture could, and I'm often irritated by players who waste time finding references. My plan is to offer him at several points in his life: teenager, college student, young professional, and father. He has a huge penis and he's good looking. That can only get you so far since even purple struggle to attract attention when they know how to write. Get used to approaching people and have decent eye-candy as well as decent kinks - partners are a dime a dozen and while charisma can get your foot in the door you need the entire package.

As with others you're gonna want to dress up your profile, give a tiny little inline for each stage/age your character can be played during with a bit of a summary for each. Presentation will be everything if you want people to approach you or at least accept your approach.

When you guys write out your profile descriptions, what's the best thing to focus on? I keep finding that it's one of my weakest points, and it's making a lot of my better thought-out characters come off as real crappy.

Worse still, there's a character I really wanna finish working on right now, but I'm in a bit of a creative rut, so I don't want to screw it up.

It's usually best to focus on how they're going to interact with other characters so that people have hooks for approaching before focusing on backstory. It's less tacky to weave it into your general profile description than having scene ideas be totally segmented off into their own collapsible, but either way works. A little backstory is okay (especially if how they came to be what/how/who they are is relevant to play) but don't overdo it and make your profile a veritable novel in 8 collapsible-separated parts. If you really want to make your character that "complex" then keep a separate sheet/word document/Pastebin/whatever for your own reference.

More generally, stay away from including things that won't be relevant to roleplay, because it's just (often boring) added bloat that nobody's going to want to read. For example… it's great that your character wields a sword that crackles with the electricity of the seven storm gods! But if you're not into electrocution, weaponplay, or anything else where a lightning sword would be applicable then it's kinda stupid to write a whole paragraph dedicated to it. On the other hand, it might be good to include limited details about a fertility deity's ability to make anything potentially pregnant or something to that effect.

Is it selfish to demand certain kinks in every one of my role plays? Like, I'm pretty sure you can have interesting characters and an engrossing narrative despite the size of their genitals or their hip-to-waist ratio. My whole philosophy is that being wholly original is not going to attract a lot of people. What you want is something that people will actually desire. In that time I've found I can't stand one-liners or semi-paragraph play, and also that chat is stressful and way too dependent on how quick the other person (or you) finish. What should I do on F-list (or in general, anywhere) if I prefer long term, 2 to 5 para (i.e max ~1k words a post) roleplaying? Possibly with multiple days between posts.

It's kinda inconvenient to have a set roster of characters, it's always made more sense to me to have different characters for every roleplay if they're long term - it also obviously depends on just what the theme is. Story and character development are important to me - it feels so artificial to just jump right into the sex. In other RPs I've had 20 or 30 posts each side before the characters even mention anything sexual. Isn't the whole point of RPing to give you a more in-depth and satisfying erotic experience over just pulling up a doujin and fapping from page 2 onwards? This is especially true for incest shit where you want to get a feel for the relationship between the characters in the first place.

I've been ERPing on SoFurry for a while on the forums, but partners are generally disappearing and there are very few literate posters left, and the ones who are left only seem to do themes I'm not really into (magic/medieval/whatever fantasy). Most people, obviously, are only willing to play furry characters. I'm yet to hear my approach is boring from someone I've ERP'd with, though I understand this isn't the most common way to enjoy ERP.

So do I make an F-list account and create a new character every time I want to RP? Do I just make one character page that represents me and list the sort of kinks I'm into or willing to play? Do people immediately just pass over things like that, or would I have a chance? And where does one find people willing to do long-term RP over notes/e-mail/some forum or another?

You should do noteplay on f-list, so you and your partner have time to write long posts and have appropriate time to build up to it. I'm in a multipara RP right now where our characters haven't even fucked yet because we've been focusing on the story. Noteplayers are less common, but they do exist. The story driven looking for RP room and the para/multipara chat are good starts for looking for people.

I recommend a few different characters for different kinds of stories that you want to play out and giving them comprehensive kinks for what you want to play. The kinks on a character page relate to the kinks that you the player have, not necessarily the kinks that a a character has.

3rd-person is still majority, but recently I've been seeing some people with 2nd-person listed as preferred – still a minority among minorities though, like first person. Some ultradom bitchbreakers do one sided worship play where they don't even reply but that's a meme.

People see that an in-depth detailed game is in progress and they don't want to join in because it would take too much investment to figure out how they're going to jump in. Notice that ero empire died die to a lack of players and the Towers have to constantly start new threads not because the old ones are full but because they can't handle people leaving because they don't have enough who want to jump in to keep things going.

There is going to be a different answer for nearly everyone. Some people may like 'charming' but it can come off as lame to a lot of others. A buddy of mine has been drawing for over 2 decades and been to 2 art schools and she still sucks. The only job she got after she graduated (well, that she told me about) was illustrations for a children's book that never got published. I've encountered many prospective partners who believed that image sharing is an integral part of role playing. I guess I'm an elitest prick, because I see image references as a goddamn crutch. I have a kink question. For a while now I've had an impregnation kink, and never the term breeding as a kink until finding F-List through /erp/. At first I simply thought they meant the same thing, except breeding is a more depraved, animalistic, uncaring form of impregnation. Especially given what I have run across on the site. Honestly, these kinds of characters are perfectly fine with me. I have no social life, I live alone, my job makes me suicidal, and I'm an anxiety ridden depressive with ADHD and probably autism. I hate my life and the world I must live in, leaving the persuit of erotic role play as a means of escapism and power fantasy. I don't actually want serious and engaging narratives when I just want to connect with another human being and play pretend that my life isn't a dumpster fire. This means my goals are different from some other people, but I hate how this site just hates and hates and hates on anyone that doesn't write narratively engaging RP's as if the whole world is supposed to consume and judge their chat logs in comparison to a best selling fiction author. I love creative writing, and I know how self inserts are a pratfall in fiction writing, but in this context I just want to get off in a way that let's me feel like the heroic winner I will never be. Playing as a confident, attractive, healthy, well adjusted man with a sex life is alien enough to my own experience to make it sound appealing. But no, if you're not a crippled minority burn victim with bipolar disorder from a troubled home then your character is judged as automatically boring.

I hate this board and all the pointless negativity it spreads. I'm convinced it's bad for my mental health just because my characters and profiles never fit within the narrow and arbitrary standards set by elitist assholes.

Harem play is a bit more greedy, at least for me. Grinding on your thighs, your arms, your feet - sucking your tits, sitting on your face, eating your ass, fingerfucking them, toying with their nipple and a few other things. I like to stack 'em, line 'em up in a row, gather 'em around, guide their heads as their eating each other out, Essentially I like to be involved with nearly anything that goes on during a harem scene. There's definitely not an unlimited number of spots to take up but the most I've done with separate partners is an 8-on-1 and it was manageable. That said, if you somehow manage to have even more on the team then yeah you'll need to portion things out.

But you can totally do it the way you mentioned as well. It's definitely a lot easier. I've done similar but it was more of a sex-party rather than a harem scene but there's nothing saying you couldn't make it so.

I made a self insert/wish fulfillment profile for the first time, and I tried playing with it and well, I kinda realized that the idealized version of myself is more sexually temperate. I couldn't roleplay almost anything sexual with him. I deleted the character, but it made me think a lot about myself and how I really am, and what my desires actually are.

I've been reading a lot of stoic philosophy recently, especially epictetus. I've been applying it to my real life with astounding success, trying my best to emulate the teachings and to be a better person.

Part of the stoicism entails controlling and subordinating one's sexual desire to logic and reason, which is something that I wish to do but have always struggled with. The idealized version of myself would be dogmatic, empathetic, strong and independent, but also be strictly monogamous and have full control of his sexual passions.

Personally, I try to stay as detached and "one and done" as possible when it comes to ERP thanks to some otherwise avoidable clinger issues in the past. I'd be really surprised if I were alone in that.

For those who advertise for it in SDLFRP, I imagine F-List's premade character system makes it a little awkward unless you play that particular canon/art/real life faceclaim/body type/etc already or have a hub. Yeah, you CAN play outside of your profile, but most people just want to play the character they signed in on rather than catering to a stranger's desires.

The biggest autist I've ever seen was from a D&D group. Habitual liar (his "job", supposedly, was as an archaelogist and he talked about unearthing Native American artifacts), always wore sweatpants and sandals, chewed with his freaking mouth open and was just a detriment to the fucking team all around. He made a character that was supposed to be super OP… around level 6 when he could actually get the feats he needs. Until then we're stuck with a monk who can't hit the broad side of a barn, has no ranged because he didn't fucking think to get a sling despite DEX being his highest stat, and died before he reached level 4 because he got flanked by 2 bugbears and a fucking 16 AC isn't going to cut it.

Anyone know a decent place to find ERP for those of us who prefer note/forum style roleplay with posts going back and forth at whatever relaxed pace, either because we have lives or we're just fucking sick of conflicting time zones and the dance of trying to catch people online? I suspect F-List is still the best place because it's so huge, but it's depressing when 98% of appealing profiles only want to do chat lewds because "I just can't stay interested in note RP, tee hee."

Alternately is there some well hidden corner of F-List for this kind of RP? The "groups" seem dead for the most part and also still have a lot of people trying to hook up on the chat.

I know of a few places. F-List can offer some pretty good people; looking particularly in the "Para/Multi-Para" or Story Driven LFRP chats might be more up your alley. Sex Driven seems predominately driven by dudes that just want to quickly spurt on their keyboards and fuck off.

I assume you mean on F-List. If you use the website character search you could put "Human" in the species field. This will exclude anyone who doesn't fill it in (probably the majority) and anyone who puts something cute like "Slut" instead.

If you use the chat search or just click on profiles p. sure you're fucked. Furries will generally not tag themselves as "No furry characters, just humans" for furry pref, obviously, but you'll miss out on all humans willing to suffer the anthro menace (or who again just didn't set it.)

F-List was made by furries for furries, so shockingly enough they have little interest in making this easy for you to do.

Would it be redundant to post a disclaimer saying that your kinks are not mandatory? Should you only do it if you have extreme kinks mixed in with vanilla kinks?

As always, have a character concept that would easily get you in the pants of your target audience. Is he a lauded “hunter” in a medieval setting renowned for “suppressing” beastmen? An animal control officer in a furry-discriminatory contemporary setting that does as he pleases with his catches? An obedience trainer/vet using sex as a valid means of “instinct control?” A breeder/farmer that cuts costs by using his own semen instead of expensive artificial insemination since anthros can have whatever DNA compatibility is convenient? A zookeeper that specializes in anthros? Something more creative that I can’t think of because I’m lazily spitballing?

The point is, especially if your art half-ass matches, a novel and focused concept works WONDERS because it’s easy to understand what someone wants and how it’s relevant to their character when you do it that way versus “le average bijoenen that somehow stumbles into sex with super hot furry chicks!!!!” If you’re worried about alienating humans, then just make another character geared toward the kind of human girl you want to bone. I will sometimes get an idea for a character, go out and find an artist and just get one image of said character, and work off that image. What I try to do is to make sure the image is just not a faceshot, but rather something that shows what the character is about, be it in a smutty setting or a non smutty. As silly as this sounds, I like seeing what a character looks like dressed before they are undressed as an outfit can tell you a bit about them.

I would use the image space and descriptions (do people read these?) and just use them to fill in gaps. Add in some wardrobe options and crop out faces so people don't mistake the people wearing the clothes for your character. Throw in a few locations the character may be at, and anything else you feel is good info for your character expressed in visual form.

I think the main problem is how you have that information laid out. To be honest it looks like a mess. Too many drop-downs inside of each other, it takes three clicks to get to any text, and literally every line is behind a bullet point.

I'd suggest having a short (but not all the way to tl;dr) character summary visible without having to open anything. There should be some text in every dropdown, and you shouldn't be placing drop downs inside of dropdowns unless you have a lot of subcategories within subcategories adding up. Bullet points are for lists of short items, so just use normal paragraphs for anything else.
