I've started work on a novel. It's hard sci-fi, set on Mars during the 22nd century during a conflict between the nations of Earth and the colonies. I'll save background filler/political material for the actual book, but the novel begins on Mars when it has been cut off from the resources of the asteroid belt (alongside from that of Earth), with the result being the planet is virtually under siege and it is in a highly untenable situation.
The story follows the lover of the leader of the Colonial Confederation trying to protect him from a Special Operative on Earth who has been sent to assassinate him, all while she evaluated her love for him and the ideals which led the conflict happening. The sci-fi concept this is centred around is the opening up of a new frontier on new planets and how precious something like a frontier is, but the two universal ideas I'm trying to hit are hero-worship (in the fact that our MC and the other characters we follow are not the Colonial leader and are in some way unreliable lenses of him, so we consider how a single man can be lionised and turn into a historical and heroic figure) and of the ingredients for true human freedom (politically and personally).
I've been building it up in my head for a couple of years, I really think it could play out well.

First time reader, first time caller here.
I'm actually writing (and have been writing for a good year now) a law review article that touches on the impact of cyberpunk on modern legal doctrine, especially international cyberlaw.
So maybe a little OT compared to what I imagine is a literature thread, but just thought I'd join the fray.

Decent. Held my interest and the end bit had me wanting to read more. I think using a video game as a setting like that is a bit cheesy and doesn't lend itself well to a more serious story but I would like to see where you would take it.

Thanks. I've got the first chapter done, if you're a masochist. Got the entire book planned out, hopefully it'll be good.
Note: this is a first draft. it hasn't even been proofed yet, so there will be some typos and roughness here.

http://craphound.com/ftw/Cory_Doctorow_-_For_the_Win.pdf
Here's a link to what I consider one of the best modern cyberpunk books that exists: For the Win by Cory Doctorow. For the Win follows a group of gamers that get wrapped up in the complex world of the virtual economy, profiting from MMOs and selling MMO currency, and MMO gold farming. When I say modern cyberpunk, I mean it takes place around our time, and it's a truly fascinating book. Best of all, the author made the book completely free to read from his website. Seriously, if you haven't read this, you need to, because this book is /cyber/ incarnate.

I guess I'm just going to throw it out there. I don't know if it's gonna be a novel, a screenplay or a comic book, but what I want to do is this:
>Megacorps A has the head scientist of Megacorps B murdered
>The murder doesn't go as planned, the hitman has to flee the scene and leave the body behind
>Police gets invovled
>Neither A nor B want the police involved, because they don't want the cops anywhere near their dirty laundry and rather sort these things out between themselves
>A middle-aged cop who had been relegated to a desk job gets the assignment since his corrupt superiors don't think he'll ever be able to solve the case
>Cop sees this as a chance for his comeback
>Starts investigating
>Eventually digs up enough dirt to implicate Megacorps A
>Commissioner dismisses him, gives him a "promotion" and tells him to shut up about it
>Cop refuses to accept this, digs up dirt on the commissioner and forces him to resign
>New commissioner lets it go to court
>It gets dismisses in a mock trial, because, guess what, the courts are corrupt, too.
>New commissioner ends up dead in a tragic car accident
>Cop either gets killed or goes vigilante, may pave the way for a sequel
That's my basic idea so far, I'm in the process of fleshing things out. And deciding on the medium, I guess.

The best way to come up with more original ideas is to just completely fuck your mind up with chemicals. Lots of people do that with drugs, but I prefer sleep deprivation. I'll run on 4-5 hours of sleep during the week, reducing to lower amounts when I'm in a crunch. Sleep dep. causes your brain to compensate by producing certain chemicals that people then to put in themselves with drugs, meaning it's cheaper for me.
Sometimes I'll go on a bender of sleeping 1 hour a night, and I've made some of my best work during those periods, stuff like a story about a guy who gets hooked on a drug that makes you feel like you're experiencing death and uses those experiences to develop a new method of hacking. Ends with him developing a digital version and injecting it into the governmental network while doing a routine hacking job.
It gets a little weird at times, I admit.

Third post in a row, IDGAF.
I'm interpreting "low life - high tech" as a post-post apocalyptic America where enough time (and a generation or two) passed that people aren't depressed about not having modern luxuries and are actually quite content.
In rural Americana, Grandparents and select few know much about technology, are passing it to children, and are just beginning to connect to the decades-old remains of the former US through jurry-rigged networks. The chaos is over and people are rediscovering the internet again in a world where messengers are the primary method of inter-city communication.

holy fuck it's been over a year since I last posted in this thread, but here it is.
Anyway, have the first three chapters of a novel I'm working on about a laid-off machinist slowly becoming a brutal vigilante in a neon-tinged urban hellscape. I've been fooling around with tone and voice for the protagonist's narration, which has been the hardest part of writing so far. Aside from that, I have the entire story plotted out (all 34 chapters!) and my goal is to have the book itself written (and preferably edited) by the end of the year.
So yeah, thoughts?

I've spent some time writing this, and the first part is something I've heavily revised for the third time. Not precisely cyberpunk.
Takes place on a planet ruled by an artificial intelligence, the main character is a recently matured body replacement of a deceased immortal cyborg aristocrat. During mind-uploading sessions, he comes across old memories of the failed human independence movement and clones of the rebel leader throughout time. Meanwhile diplomatic tension worsens between his home planet and a galactic federation.
Big theme/concept in this first part (mostly a setting intro) is artificial wombs and genetic engineering.
I know there's going to be something despicable or dismissable about it. But I wonder what people think about it.
