It's been over a year since i've messed with a cell phone and never knew much about them anyways. it used to be you could buy a burner for $20 bucks that came with minutes/texts that also didnt expire every 30 days.

does this still exist?

walmart wants 20-30 for a phone and then 40 (with tax) every 30 days just to be able to text.

i am a vpn user that cannot get on: twitter, youtube, skype, periscope etc etc without providing a cell number so they can text me, which is all i need this for. none of the "free sms texting" sites have ever worked for me.

what is the cheapest solution here? a burner for 55 up front then 40/month? or is there some online text service that actually works? all i need is to verify accounts to get on social media sites.

how does cyber go about this?

For a GMail account you can create one without providing a phone number if you're making one from an Android on Settings>Accounts>GMail.

Best way to do this is downloading VPN Hotspot from F-Droid, make sure your phone is connected to the VPN and then access the new Wi-Fi hotspot on one of those phones Walmart (or any other phone stores) keep available to the public for testing, you can use a single phone to make many accounts.

Also there are many paid burner number services that allow you to create as many numbers as you want from their app, https://www.burnerapp.com/ is one of them. Make sure to check the privacy policies tho, or at least use Shelter to use the app on an isolated work profile

I wish they would remove this 'sim number' thing for online accounts even bank accounts these days. It's a complete breach of security, someone with high telco clearance, hacking skills, or maligned LEA can respectively; duplicate your number, access your phone, and intercept your messages through fake base station (like fake AP in wifi but it's 'that' van). With this they can then have unlimited access over your private onlinr accounts to target you. SIM cloning is a thing and even the telco can grant a duplicate of your SIM without you knowing (e.g, during recovery services of lost SIM cards and it won't interfere, like those chinese '5 in 1' sim card aggregator).

For getting a g mail it's as easy as running a VM with android kitkat (still worked last year for me) which lets you register a google mail without the need for a phone number (lollipop above need it so find old android x86 iso),

With a gmail at hand, you can then use that for most of the stuff. I suggest you make email accounts now, notbsure though if the trick still works.

Though it's convenient to buy phones in convenient stores, it is a risk of identity.

If paid in card, transaction is stored up the EMV666, the purchase transaction contains info about its imei most likely for warranty purposes, even the SIM is tracked where it was released in case there's a defect (usually happens in food and battery recalls). So your best bet is if your country likes to do retail for sim and sim credit like entrepreneur sellers and not actual stores, retail is safer, and the phone, just buy used.

Even better, just have a box of usb modem dongle.

It sucks though since the SIm might be more expensive where you live and in some authoritarian countries you'll need a passport/id before being granted one, where I am it only costs around $0.50 for a SIM no ID needed though data costs $1 a day.
