why do we have the shitty future and not the future from neuromancer/snowcrash/ect? and will we see it at all in the next 20-50 years? it's almost 2020 for fucks sake… some cyberpunk already takes place in this time period.

Neon doesn't work like it does in paintings? The sky is full of sunlight and the streets are full of people half of the time?

You can get pop music about Roko's Basilisk - directly addressing existential fears about looming AI potential. People are showing up with fashion prosthetics and weirdoes are shoving entire wifi access points into their arms for shits & giggles.

You _got_ the future from those books, you're just not the hero of the story or one of the mooks being ground down.

Shit doesn't look right because it's not nighttime and raining 24/7. Apartments look normal because people like light colors on their walls and movable furniture. There was an apartment building in Tokyo that looks _just_ like the average cyberpunk person-pod, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metabolism_(architecture)#Nakagin_Capsule_Tower. It's an abandoned slum.

People just don't want all of that shit. There's nothing stopping you from trying it, though. If you really want to have that shit, there are people exploring every attainable aspect of the cyberpunk future right now. It's all a fucking slog, but that's because the real world is hard.

I guess that's the answer to your question, "We got as much of that future as the real world would allow. Turns out that shit is hard."

>someone who has delusions about living in the future

This accurately describes 90% of all modern cyberpunk communities.

as other posters have pointed out, we are in a cyber future now, its just less noticeable in certain places. in asia it is more pronounced.

whats really the difference between 2020 and Children of Men? they look the same

We got the dystopian shit with powerful corps, nonexistant privacy and huge gap between rich and poor.

We lack the few advantages like readily available augmentations and 水 aesthetics.>>57141

For any given futuristic technology there is an eventual data format that makes interaction with it viable. Until then, we can only dream. Skilled enthusiasts are the way toward advancement now.

The Neuromancer future /was/ the shitty future, and it's as close to the one we got as any we've seen in science fiction before. If you need to capture that feeling, get out your pocket computer and watch some K-pop music videos. Use a contactless card and remember that it was science fiction magic in the eighties. Walk out into your city at night and look up at the lit windows on the towers. Visit an Apple store. Tune into twitch and remember Rikki from Burning Chrome. The cyberpunk future is here if you care to see it.

We don't see that in the West because cyberpunk was hallucination of left wing authors that capitalism would bring disaster to 1st world. So far 1st world didn't fell and no signs of social disaster except for some LARPers fom the USA who pretend they are poor yet they browse Intwerwebs on their iPhones while sitting in Starbucks. The closest to techno-social disaster level presented in cyberpunk novels is (oh irony) semi-communist China (in your face pinkies).

Because we let leftists take over most of society…education, technology, media, all leftist. Somewhere along the way the left stopped being liberal and sharing the values of consumerism that drive so much of technological advancement that everyone wants, and started being more blatant about being authoritarian communists. Progress has largely been stunted as a result of the increasing obsession with identity politics and virtue signaling which has been at the expense of social and technological progress and quality.

The end result is a bunch of fucking garbage.

The world has plenty of cyber, not enough punk. Most people now aren't interested in trying to break the mold and be their own person.

The *values of consumerism*? Holy shit.

There is nothing more depressing than scrolling through a cyberpunk board and finding some hate-poisoned fourteen year old tripping over themselves to shill for corp culture and in the same breath blame the world's problems on some imaginary monolithic Left. I've never seen anybody miss the point so completely.

There's a timestamp on your post, so everyone can see that you were posting this while there were literally riots in the streets in the US. You're under constant commercialised surveillance, you can't repair your own tech, the economy is a mess, legislative corruption is rampant and worst of all dickheads like you continue to insist that nothing is wrong. Nothing frog-boils like a Neet in a failed state.

cyberpunk was like the UK's industrial revolution, but into the future with networks, neons and tek

it required advanced rotten capitalist lords actually capable of surviving by act of corruption, as conservatives keeping communism at bay, but they failed and continue failing, so all we get is just scraps of a society so poor the result is notek no skyscraper and no neons, because the guys who won the capitalist race are not just selfish and obsessed about greatness in big tek, they're actually paranoiac and obsessed about destroying the rest in an environment where its not possible to bring about the cybershift

Jesus fucking christ would you stop trying so hard? It's making me cringe so badly my spine is threatening to break the skin! Stupid little shazbots like you throw around "corpcuck" and "corpfag" every time someone buys something, like engaging in free trade and corporatism are the same fucking thing. Kill yourself.
